If you read the manga, shishio sensei made a lot of efforts too and was always there for suzume. He wasn't confused with his feelings for her but he knew his boundary and what's good for suzume. That's why I liked his character so much. But sure I prefer mamura for suzume tho.

This manga is my holy grail that I go back to every once in a while. The manga tells the story at a greater depth and all of the characters are a lot more fleshed out with each of them going on to have their own journeys. I really liked the character setting and development of Yosano, from aloof yet carefree to someone who becomes mature and caring without losing her innocent genuiness over the years. Usually, because mangaka want to make the story as interesting and gut-wrenching as possible, there's a lot of unnecessary drama added in that taints the mcs of their original innocency and purity, (eg, incest, gossip, bullying, cheating, male lead can't decide --> Aoharu looking at you, female lead uses someone else as diving board --> Aoharu looking at you, both friends liking same girl..) the characters lose their charm and become angsty, they are no longer straight forward and mope, cry, curse. However HIrunaka no Ryuusei shows how romance should be if it was the best sort of love. We see Mamura treating girls with more resepect after meeting Yosano, Sensei gaining courage to confront his feelings, Yosano going from someone who was aloof and awkward to someone more outgoing that cares for others, Yuyuka changes from a prideful selfish girl who once manipulated the people around her to someone who was more open, kind and vulnerable with genuine friends by her side. Everyone is making growth to become someone better, not someone with greater social experience yet lacking in honesty. The manga shows the pure sort of school life romance that we only get in a short period of our time, it is not dating one after another, unending gossip, break up...not saying that bullying didn't happen, Yuyuka did socially single Yosano out at first, but the mangaka showed how the same problems could be resolved differently and I think that's why this story hits different, everyone is trying their best to resolve things that wouldn't hurt others, they are all trying to be better people for themselves and for the people that care for them.
