The critic in me notices a bunch of animation flaws, but I don't even care about them because the voice acting and the score are so damn good. Aimee Carrero breaks my heart in the best possible way, and AJ Michalka pleading with Adora? I am blinking back tears just remembering it!

I'm not American and I was born in the 2000s, so the first time I had ever heard of Shera was when the first promotional images for the reboot came out and people were getting up in arms about Adora's design. I thought of people's reactions as being very exaggerated, but I didn't give the show much thought after until back in July, when I rejoined tumblr and noticed people talking about it. I wish I had watched it from the get go. On top of quickly becoming one of my all time favorite cartoons and shows ( up there with ATLA, Gravity Falls and anime like Hunter x Hunter and Fullmetal Alchemist ) and it has also become extremely dear to my heart for personal reasons. I've been in a "sexuality crisis" so to say for a few years now. I live in a country that doen't take too kindly to LGBT folks, so I wasn't able to fully accept my attraction towards the same gender...until Shera that is. I prefer watching animated media over live action media, more sepcifically action and/or fantasy shows. And Shera was my first time seeing a love story between two women be such a vital and important component of an overall huge plot. Seeing this and the stigma-free world of the series helped me come a long way towards self-acceptance. I've also always been a fan of complicated familial relationships ( positive or negative ) and the show delivered it in spades with the central theme of the Cycle of Abuse and the contrast between multiple parental figures throughout the story. Shera is a show that really has something for me to sink my teeth into it when it comes to character and relationship analyses. Which is an activity I enjoy doing as I tend to overthink stuff in general. It's been only a few months since I've discovered Shera, but it feels longer. Watching it all for the first time almost felt like coming home from an unknown land. I think the experience will stick to me for a long time. And the thought of others finding such comfort through Shera as I did brings me a lot of joy. Thank you for making this video!

May I ask what language you watched the show in? I've been rewatching it dubbed in foreign languages because I'm a weirdo like that, and the Spanish one is the only one I follow well enough to tell if the voice acting is any good, so I'm curious for non-Americans' opinions.
@rosey480

@@jimballard1186 I actually watch it in English most often. I tend to dislike some of the translation choices made in my country when it comes to dub and subs in general, so I usually either watch a show straight in English or with English subtitles if it's in another foreign language. I did decide to give the dub a shot tho ( my mother tongue is Romanian ) and watch some of the episodes. The voice acting itself wasn't bad in my opinion, but I don't think all of the voices fit. Catra's was hit or miss for me and Bow's, I think, didn't really match him.

Ah, a fellow watcher who also compares this to HxH because seriously that is high praise. At the time of watching Hunter x Hunter I was hit incredibly hard by the plethora of emotions I was subjected to in the Chimera Ant arc of that show and no other piece of media has been able to elicit a similar response out of me until She-ra. And personally, I rank this higher than HxH because it is so much more positive. I mean HxH is a phenomenal show but you have to admit it is extremely dark and I consider ATLA to be quite dark especially considering what happened to Azula who was the most interesting character for me. I don't think anything ever in my experience has been able to pull off a happy ending with this level of satisfaction. After that final episode I was having an existential crisis knowing that there wasn't any more of this masterpiece.

She-Ra is one of those shows that I find I can make connections to. Whether it is to my own life as a trans person, or to other content that I really enjoy. One connection is Adora's realization of what the Horde is and her transition to the Rebellion, and her finding her true self throughout the show, from finding the sword and how She Ra affects her, to as I stated before, her transitioning from the Horde and the affects of growing up in the horde

Yeah I watched the original after I watched the reboot and the 80's version is good and all but to me there was nothing about it that made it any better or worse than the reboot I really do feel like it's just the nostalgia that's the reason why fans of the old she-ra can't just accept the new version for what it is flaws and all.

@@vrepitsa1083 the main critique I heard from fans of the original I talked to after finishing the reboot to try and find out why they didn't like it was essentially "this is a completely different show with the she-ra brand slapped on it to draw in old fans." Which is a fair critique I guess but I can't help thinking the nostalgia for the old (which I thought was just as entertaining as the reboot personally) clouds there judgement of the new I went into the reboot never having seen the original She-ra so maybe that's why I can look at the reboot objectively and accept it for what it is idk.

She ra is a show that saved me by ripping me away from an extremely intense panic attack and later led to me deciding to become an animator and finding my sense of purpose. This show is like a warm hug to anyone struggling with themselves. It serves as both an escape and a teacher. It’s focus on character interaction as the main source of plot is awesome amongst a slew of shows based mostly on world building, and caters to a demographic that isn’t really targeted a lot in cartoons. It’s an absolute masterpiece and everyone should watch it, especially if you’re a teen dealing with mental illness and or trauma.

If you haven't seen it, there's Kipo and the age of wonderbeasts. It's 3 seasons, 10 episodes per season, 23-ish minutes per episode, features whoever voiced Glimmer, and is overall a very fun show about working towards a better future of acceptance. If the title implies to you the same thing it implied to me - a show about weird magical monsters fighting each other - then it's better than it sounds.

The art style is relatively simple, but my god the physicality of the characters is just amazing. Entrapta, Sea Hawk, and Catra in particular have fantastic ways of moving around especially when Entrapta’s excited, Sea Hawk’s hamming it up, and Catra feels like being particularly insufferable. This show came at a time when I really needed it, and immediately became my comfort show. It literally got me through 2020. When the world just seemed too ugly and everything looked hopeless, I could watch She-Ra and be reminded of goodness, hope, and love even in the face of darkness and struggle and pain. Not to mention, it feels like the first time I've seen a show TRULY leave behind all the bigotry that seems so inherent to our society. When people have conflict in the show, it's because of what they've done, not who they are. She-Ra is important as an example of what that can look like.

Jokes aside another fantastic video on Shera, seriously this show is amazing, I grow up on He-Man and She-ra back in the 90' (yes I'm damn old), and I not afraid to say that this show blow the original out of the water in all fronts....Animation, story, characters, music, themes, Artwork, you name it, its just better, this is one of the few shows that grab me emotional, just like Avatar or Korra or Steven Universe and its one of the few shows that I already watch it more than 1 time each season (currently 3 times) so yeah is so much re-watchable, more impressive knowing that this show is not that old, its was done in only 2 years, thats incredible, you will think that was rushed, but no, each season become better than the last and easily now I put She-Ra in my top 5 best cartoon shows ever made, along with Avatar and Batman TAS, its that damn good. Starting my second run through She-ra again. I started watching it with my daughter with the attitude of "Ok. I promised I'd watch the first 3 episodes. If I don't like it, I'm out." So ... then we watched the entire thing in 3 days. Given how terrible 2020 has been ... this show was a real ray of hope during a dark time for me, and for that alone it will always hold a special place for me. To say nothing about Entrapta. I have never, ever, seen a character I related to more than Entrapta. There's characters I love and enjoy, sure, but it's extremely rare for me to really relate to one because my outlook and way I see the world has always felt different from others. So from the moment she shows up I was hooked. There's a line she has at one point that I really needed to hear right about now. I won't spoil the show, but it's between her and Hordak, and I'm adopting it as my life's moto from here on out. Moving on now that i'm done fan girling, this show's emotional feel is amazing, which blew me away and wasn't something I expected from a kid's show aimed at 7 year olds. I could go on and on. I'm still trying to convince friends to watch it. To be honest, they are all having the same reaction I did when I try to talk them into it. "...Oh come on. It's a kids show. How good could it be?" My English teacher recommended it to me while it was still in season 2 and I was like "meh", then I saw everyone talking about it and couldn't resist spoiling myself with little bits of it (I always spoil myself a bit to make sure that it's actually something I will enjoy) and was like I NEED TO WATCH THIS. But then I forgot. Until 2021 when my sister watched it and actually pushed me to finally watch it myself. *I think I've never been more emotionally invested in a show in my life.*

This show was fantastic, simplistic art style aside. It takes a lot to get me, a 29 year old man to cry, and I did a grand total of four times throughout this series, both in happiness, and in sadness. Yes, it is just that damn good. It's been over a month since my first watch through, and yet I still cannot stop thinking about it.

I’m so deeply amazed by how many people truly enjoy this show, when i first discovered it, in 2018. It was right at the beggining, just one season, which of course i watched in almost two days, but my expectations by episode 11 were just blown away. That score, that character build-up which offers you a sense of sympathy and gosh, the *tears* . The feels of wanting to be there, in that fantastical world, as i got to watch the seasons as they aired, season three ( but as mentioned in this video, could be consider the second half of season 2 ) ripped a part of my soul out, with that ending. What can i say about season 4 or 5 then? If you haven’t watched it, i suggest you do, not because of the posts you’ve probably seen more often of two girls( one cat-ish and the other giant- lady-with-blue-sword ), do it, because let’s be honest, that package of perfectly arranged emotions can lead you to a world of its own. And i’m done. Five by Five Takes you have my respect.

I was on the verge of dropping this show up until Catra opens the portal and they all got stuck in that weird pocket dimension. Just watching Adora have everyone tell her things are fine when she knows they aren't and can't figure out why hit home for me; at the time something similar was happening to me. Anyway I'm glad I stayed as the last few seasons were really good.

To say how good She-ra is let me say it this way... I’m a straight guy and after finishing this show last week it has been playing in my mind constantly. I now have read multiple fan comics and fanfics about what people think happened to adora and Catra after season five. I am about to rewatch the whole series for a second time and this series has made me cry more than any other series I know which me crying over a show in the first place is rare. This show tells its’ story in a well paced, heartwarming way that leaves you wanting more. God I hope they make a movie.

I stumbled upon the show after my heart getting torn apart from finishing Voltron, lol I feel in love with right away and was around when they renewed it for a second season but then promptly forgotten about until the last seasons because people didn't talk about it much! Which is a shame because I think that it tells s beautiful story, and I love that it takes a deep look at the chosen one trope we've seen so many and breaks it down with a charming conclusion about love and care

Been about a week and half since I started watching it the first time. Don't ask me how but I have managed to watch the show fully 2 times (currently on my 3rd) and have re-watched season 5 2 more times. I have always had hyper fixation problems so you can imagine how much this show wrecked me :) Also, funnily enough, I started this show about a year into deciding that I was bisexual. By the time I finished it for the second time I realized that I was a lesbian. So that alone should show you how much She Ra can cause you to reflect on yourself.

You have to go into this show looking for the story in the arc. The individual episodes have 80's cartoon plot sensibilities, problem, complication, hard the-more-you-know solutions. But there's no clean-slate resolution, characters have lingering problems within the episode or they learn things about themselves and others that they don't have to learn next time. Interactions can be melodramatic in places but can be almost disturbingly emotionally intelligent in others. The seasons as a whole have great storytelling where choices and decisions have far-reaching impacts. What She-Ra does that makes it exceptional isn't representation, or character growth or Strong Female characters. you can find those things in any number of shows. It's not nostalgia or kitch. The show fails in a lot of ways there. The music and voice talent are better than they should be for a show like this but you can find better of each if that's what you want. You should watch She-Ra because it addresses character growth defined by relationship for every character in the show. All characters in the show are treated in their own regard by others and you can watch the result of that treatment play out across the show in this fantastically explored tapestry. The heroes, villains, background characters, even the comic relief, they all grow and change and you can look at those changes and tie them to specific events in prior episodes. It is probably the most textured characterization I've seen in any show and it gets better with every episode.

Okay can I just say that I absolutely love your videos on She-Ra? The way you explain them and how you explain them make them so easy to understand and awesome, and as a young person who loves to analyze every bit of the meaning of a TV show, I find it difficult to put my thoughts into actual words that make sense. Your videos do that for me, and it's like a sense of clarity. My family watched she ra with me, and their reaction was honestly not what I was hoping for. I love and will continue to love she ra, it's probably one of the most amazing shows I'm ever going to watch. My family didn't like it, focused way too much on its flaws and the things that didn't make sense about it, and were weirded out when I got mad at them for doing so. This show means so much to me its insane, it inspired me to come out to my family, it helped me understand a shit ton of stuff about the world that's hard for any teenager to wrap their head around, it made me understand myself more, my values, and it brought so much happiness to my life. This show honestly means the absolute world to me, and my family made me feel stupid for thinking that, which felt horrible. These videos actually make me feel like I'm not absolutely insane for loving it so much, so THANK YOU.

1:40 I actually like it when shows do that. Actually take the time to see how these people act. You can't really disrupt the status quo if you haven't established one. The one-offs actually give the world and characters focus. You really get a sense for what the characters are about because the entire episode is about them.

I watched He-Man and Masters of the Universe (as far as I remember) when I was like 6-7. 80s cartoons were running early 90s where I lived. It was a show that I fully fell in love, even though it was such a crappy or simplistic animation. It drew me for its gorgeous and yet so out of this world landscapes, its queer fashion and characters. It was the first time I felt safe (I was a very imaginative and an escapist child) but also, it felt close to my personal identity. Aside from its sense of mystery and magic, I think it evoked something more profound in me. As a gay man, it makes sense. And then She-Ra happened, even more queer version of He-Man predominantly the fact that Etheria was even more untamed than Eternia. It had women so it was a lot more fashion heavy, and it had a main man who was wearing something super gay! Needless to say, both shows meant so much to me and seared in my consciousness. I followed everything Masters (of the Universe) since then. I liked He-Man 200X but didn't love it because it felt like it went too "straight". Even the world looked dull and boring like a typical fantasy setting with typical architecture and colour scheme. Then I saw the up coming She-Ra and I won't lie, I was very worried because I did not like the less detailed art style and the character designs of some of the characters (I still have a problem with the design of Shadow Weaver). But I was obligated to watch it. I was watching the first season but I was struggling...until towards the end. It started winning me over. And I already wanted to see what was going to happen to Catra, she was kind of the main character I was interested in...but then, this show...it just soars at such heights. It did a little bit of lore building and contributing to the Etheria in a good way, but I realised, it was not its main focus. It wanted to tell a personal/character driven story and it nails that....Now, I am so worried about the new He-Man. It feels like it will try to be more "grim-dark" and while that's fine, it has been done to death in the comics as well is in the cartoons. I doubt it will go beyond plot driven story that means something a lot deeper for the characters like in She-Ra. I don't want to judge it yet, but that's my concern. I appreciated new She-Ra's heart so much. While the original cartoons were interesting, they were shallow overall. They were there to sell toys afterall. I felt like She-Ra, since He-Man 200X, is the real effort in this universe to tell a proper story. But He-Man 200X also had a very plot heavy focus. I hope the writers get that they will not be able to wow anyone with that approach. I mean, what could He-Man tell in its straighforward fantasy tropey format? Unless they take great risks and actualise the full potential of its unique/strange/queer world, it will be boring. Anyway, in short: I am so happy that this show exists and they nailed it. And as an adult queer man, it warms my heart extra that it included so much open queerness.

I’m amazed they made this show. It’s a children’s cartoon, so adults watching it on their own will roll their eyes at parts, but I watched it with my daughters, ages 7 and 11, and we loved every episode. And I am so glad they watched this show. It is a story about love and friendship conquering oppressive evil. Again, adults will roll their eyes at the idea that love is what defeats the ultimate evil, but the fact of the matter is, in our world, love and friendship are exactly how we defeat the evils we face in our daily lives. So it is good for kids to internalize this early in life. It’s a good lesson to learn. But what is so amazing about She-Ra is its absolutely unflinching commitment to a fully inclusive idea of love. There is heteronormative love between male and female characters, but the beating heart of the show is a queer love story, where two people overcome trauma and abandonment to build a well of trust and understanding that allows them to accomplish the impossible. The show treats nonbinary characters, neurodivergent characters, and the differently abled all with complete respect as integral parts of the story. There are straight couples, gay couples, interracial couples, inter-species couples, gay inter-species couples… everything. And it doesn’t wave this inclusion around like a flag, seeking credit for it, or just deciding that because there are gay characters, or nonbinary characters, that they’ve done their job and can go home without writing a good story because, hey, they can just cash their inclusion credit and call it a show. No. It is just a natural part of the story and nobody ever remarks on who a character loves or why (or if they do, it is because of the actions they’ve taken in the story and not because they’re autistic or in a same-sex marriage). It is simply pure respect for all people and all love. And this is such an amazing and wonderful thing to include in a children’s show because it teaches us all that tolerance and acceptance of love is itself how we defeat the great evil that is intolerance. One metaphor for the show is a statement about the value of true diversity - the final evil is an army of clones of a megalomaniac, so, literally, every person on the antagonistic force is identical and trying to make the whole universe exactly like itself. Every kid should watch this show (and every adult too).
