Scott You have to use your moisture reader with the grain of the timber for it to give you accurate readings not across the grain. The device is measureing the resistance between the pins so for a stud, have the pins vertical to each other and for a nog/dwang have it horizontal.

It’s great! My shed has been completed and it turned out nice looking and sturdy and it is way better than the sheds that many of my neighbors had put up. Of course, I'm pleased with the outcome and this Ryan’s kzbin.infoUgkxGZedDTcDfgD7fG_uU4esfx_EgxzlY2_1 Plans was extremely useful to me as a guide.

Hi Scott, Jess, ref your ceiling insulation insulation issue. As you have pointed out you dont want to block the ventilation while getting the insulation right onto the interal leaf of the external wall. Our construction here in the UK is cavity block or brick wall. 100mm or greater cavity. I put 1m long sections of Rockwool flexy the thicknes of the rafter around the perimiter of the roof and then fill the rest of the roof space with fiberglass insulation as required by the building regs. This means there are no cold spots at the perimiter of any of the rooms preventing mould growth. Hope the project is going well.

Hi Scott, I am currently demolishing a 90 square meter house which had insulfluff and you definitely did yours the tidiest way. I tried both ways and sucking it out while the ceiling is still intact is still hard work but it did create a lot less mess. I spent several months of weekends last year sucking it all out with a leaf blower that I modified with a fitting and some aluminum ducting. Used the leaf blower in the ceiling and and ran the ducting down into the floor into old duvet covers which were tied around the ducting. The leaf blower sucks all the insulfluff into the duvet cover like a giant vacuum bag. Then once full tie the end up drag the cover outside and dispose. You should be safe with the asbestos as I believe it is made from old newspapers with a fire retardant added, it is still horrible stuff to be breathing in though, full face respirator is the way to go.

Why not leave the insulation and put new plasterboard over the existing ceiling? We did this with an 1870 house with a lathe and plaster ceiling, after seeing the mess some friends made when they ripped down their ceiling we said "Stuff that!", worked a treat and is still there 40 + years later. Happy Birthday Scott.

Working inside roofs is the absolute worst - I feel your pain. As a 14yo kid, "helping" my electrician dad in the middle of the Australian summer, I always got the job of working inside the roof... It was awful and I felt like I would die up there (it was hard to see or hold stuff, with the sweat runnin down). Compared to that, I used to look forward to being sent under the floor. And we didn't have any of that fancy breathing gear or protective clothing - so I would come out caked in muck and coughing up dirt and dust. 50 years later, I am somehow still going, so I guess it mustn't have been the bad dust... (there was plenty of asbestos around then)

For the drywall, just make sure it is not similar to the Chinese manufactured drywall that was used in Florida a few years ago when they had a shortage. That drywall emitted some kind of sulfur gas that caused all metal, pipes, door knobs etc to start corroding causing all kinds of issues, not to mention I am sure it is not great for your health. Good luck with the renovation.

Hey Scott. I seen you go into the roof and clean it up… not worth it in my opinion. It will waste so much time especially on a clients house. Just make sure the room is sectioned off. Hey Scotty, Not sure if that ceiling board is asbestos or not but I my old place I ripped down the first room full of insulfluf and after that I said no way so I screwed the fibrous at 200mm centers then glued and used 41mm screws with 10mm Gib over the top. Saved heaps of time and money.
@DiscoFang2 жыл бұрын
You could have saved even more of both. You could have skipped the gib. Once you screw the crap out of the pinex you can just skim coat it. You can not tell the difference once painted and it's solid-as.

@iplayzthegames69682 жыл бұрын
wish id i invested in a sawzall. i ripped out an entire barn conversion by hand and it was a pain in the ass, they did it properly for the time and then later added a dropped roof and a cupboard and toilet to convert it to an office space, bricked up the door into the house. i used handtools to take out all the plasterboard then all the studs. i had to use a manual impact driver to remove screws bolting studwork to the wall, never even seen one before that but it was all i had access to. Took me about 2 weeks in my evenings to get it all apart so i could salvage as much of the wood as possible before the builders came in and did the works, i was still in college training to be a carpenter so didnt have any skill to do what was planned

Happy birthday Scott! Have you considered running cat6 to each room to future proof?
@fecnde2 жыл бұрын
Yes ! This! Sure wifi is easy but a hardwire connection is so much better. I’d suggest cat6 in all rooms that you reline. On a few sides of the room if it’s possible.
@MrLukeChandler2 жыл бұрын
@@fecnde absolutely! Mesh Wifi is even better when you have both units connected to Ethernet too. 2 Ethernet per bedroom and 3-4 in the lounge (smart TV, game consoles, chromecast ultra, smart hub for lights, hub for security cameras). It’s endless. Of course all wired back to a central location (like a cabinet or in wall unit).
@TheOneWhoMightBe2 жыл бұрын
@@MrLukeChandler Even with 2 eth ports I'd still run four cables and just leave the two spares in the wall unterminated for redundancy or for futureproofing (my office could really do with another two ports but I can't actually get any more cables in without pulling gyp off and feeding them through a couple of s-bends). Cheaper and easier to do it now than later.
@theablanca172 жыл бұрын
@@MrLukeChandler yeah, and be prepared for PoE etc. Makes things much easier. Esp for mesh, but perhaps with jacks placed close to ap etc. i would love to go all out on such a thing.
@theablanca172 жыл бұрын
@@cmmartti yeah, that house and perhaps their needs. IoT needs at times different things. Often you need to bring out ethernet for mesh etc anyways. I would do a mix of both, but wouldn't rely only on wifi as that can be a MESS when there's 10-20 IoT things all wanting to connect, and then everything else. Wired ethernet speced high will ALWAYS give you advantages. Like, nicely placed mesh APs with PoE so you gets rid of power supplies etc. But. to each their own.

In the States we have some really good thin prybars designed exclusively for removing trim without denting the underlying wood. Sharkbite is my preferred brand. Can you get these in New Zealand? They can get behind anything. The edge will actually cut you. I generally prepare mine by dulling the edge a tiny bit and filing the corners a little bit round. I keep one of these prybars in my every day bag. Maybe have a look.
