I can't tell you the countless times we have been disappointed to the extent that we started making Indian food ourselves at home. Imagine carrot pudding tasting butter chicken put in front of you with a simile..THE AUDACITY!

From having Paneer Tikka Masala that was basically Paneer dipped in what I would term as Tomato pudding to Paneer dipped in Sambaar, we have had it all. And since you mentioned Carrot Pudding, we once had Carrot chunks floating in warm sweet milk in the name of Gajar ka Halwa. That was the height. I always rate Indian restaurants on the scale of Not bad, bad, worse and worst. lol. But honestly, because of Gordon Ramsey' shows and the sheer number of Indian population in the UK we always thought UK has better Indian restaurants. But looks like its the same. Wonder how Australia fares.

There is a show 'kitchen revolutions' on Polish TV. An outstanding restaurateur comes to failing restaurants(Magda Gessler). There used to be an Indian restaurant episode. Everything seemed to match. The owner from India and a large part of the crew and they had a tandoor oven etc. They had no customers. They were making a big mistake. They polonized the kitchens of India. It stopped people's interest. They started cooking again in an original way. Now they have several restaurants in Poland and they are all successful.
