Imagine how good the story could have been. Mandy is the insufferable girl we all know. Then, she gains powers - the thing she hated others for. And THIS is where the story would truly begin, with her accepting herself as she works towards fixing her past mistakes and slowly getting closer to those around her. And her acceptance wouldn't come from her powers, but rather the character development she got after receiving them. It saddens me how easily this story could have worked. The base work is actually good, the concepts are there, but the execution is so superficial....

I’m pretty sure even the character’s LGBT status was a self insert. And what’s worse is, instead of presenting her character flaws as something to work past, they just act like it’s normal and acceptable. Like nothing need to change. The only cases that works is with character like the punisher, where you’re not supposed to idolize them. Because even those characters have something to offset them. Some other characters verbally or physically confront them because of what they do, to prove the point that they are a monster. Their bullshit doesn’t just go unchallenged, as if it’s totally normal to behave in such a way. But that’s what “I’m Not Starfire” does. Her bad behaviors aren’t confronted, and her story ends not far from where it started. It is the worse kind of self insert. It is the “my character can do no wrong” self insert.

@@classystegosuarus Yeah especially the locker room scene! Some people are like "oh no bullies!" But... those are the closest thing Mandy has to friends. These are the few people willing to talk to her at all. People make a big deal out of them mocking Mandy for stuff, but... in both cases it makes perfect sense. In the one case they're playing a team sport and Mandy just... refuses to play. She doesn't even pretend to try. So she gets griped at for it. I'd do it too. Sure it's not "about winning"... but at the same time.... Mandy was being a selfish brat and ruining the game for everyone. She deserved to be called out for it. And the other one... the girl is like "what is wrong with you?" and people latch on to the use of the world "alien"... but... in context, it's actually just her asking what Mandy's reasoning is, and not even saying being an alien is bad, just asking if that's WHY.

“...she hates superheroes because she isn’t one...”. This has probably been said already, but just imagine replacing “superheroes” with another group of people (such as people of a certain ethnicity, belief system, social status, occupation, etc.) to see how offensive and judgmental that mindset is. If someone online stated, “I hate pizza delivery people because I’m not one,” they would get called out and rightly so. A good story would have the protagonist realize it’s wrong to condemn others simply for being different, not try to justify it or go the “Well, it’s okay if I’m one!” route that this one did. “I hate pizza delivery people. Sure, I am one now, but that’s different because I’m better than the others!”

It also would have been way more cool if at the end she didn't gain powers and just automatically become a titan, but starfire was defeated and she trained under nightwing just as a regular human to make sure she could protect her mom the next time someone threatened her now that she understands the biggest insecurity she faced.

"We want more relatable, realistic stories". It's called slice-of-life mangas and they are pretty popular. Gotoubun just ended about 16 months ago and was the most popular romance/slice-of-life manga so far. @atomf91433 жыл бұрын
No, we hate it because she is a spoiled, annoying brat. DC has had a whole gamut of aliens and beings over its history, and looks aren't what change our opinions- mostly. Neither is being LGBT. However, we have a problem with characters that we are supposed to like having no likable qualities or changing for the better across a story. At the beginning, she is selfish, annoying, and spoiled. At the end, she is still that but with superpowers. And somehow, that trait being added changes everything?!
@D--fy4wu3 жыл бұрын
@@atomf9143 so… it’s still poorly written
@b.heaven92343 жыл бұрын
@@D--fy4wu It's really bad. Mandy (Not-Starfire's name) makes it a point to hate superheroes and even going to college. She was going on and on arguing about the point of college simply because "that's what everyone else does". She refuses to take SAT and even walked out of one. She DESPISES being told what to do. She even befriends another person who proclaimed themself (?) an anarchist and agrees with Mandy. There's also this blonde tanned girl she has a crush on, but then flipped on her for taking a selfie with the Teen Titans. The blonde girl didn't even know what made Mandy so angry. It's through the Anarchist friend that Blonde girl found out Mandy hates superheroes. When she got superpowers after the story's "climactic" incident, we time skipped 1 week later and she starts considering going to college because she gets to be tutored by Raven at the Teen Titans HQ while she does superhero stuff. Apparently, her hatred for college isn't a well-thought out belief ingrained in her, she was just "figuring things out" and she was being told what to do by her mother but it's all okay now that she's a superhero herself. *TLDR moral of the story*: Throw a tantrum until you get superpowers. Only then you start becoming friendly and reasonable. Disclaimer: I didn't read it myself. I watched another KZbinr who did (Dannphan) and she showed it page by page as she gives her own thoughts.

@atomf91433 жыл бұрын
She gets it rough, but still comes out smiling. Then DC just HAD to go and saddle her with Mandy, one of the most dislikable characters they have ever written, not just due to her motivations, but her character traits and the fact that she is a self-insert, pandering protagonist.
@itsthegr8matt Жыл бұрын
,,I fail to see how an author having physical similarities to the character makes it a self insert..." I am absolutely floored! Self insert means that you're trying to put yourself in the story. This can be achieved in a few ways: 1. Character looks like the author From hair, clothes, weight, accessories and many more. If any of these match the author, then it's a self insert. However it can bear a heavy resemblance (Author and character look like twins) or a Light resemblance (Character shares only one or two features with the author) 2. Character acts like the Author wants to act This means that while the character doesn't look exactly like the author, character acts with no fear or hesitation and is able to solve any problem with relative ease. (Mary Sue) Author here has severe issues with his self worth or self esteem and he feels the need to create a character that is in every way beter than the author himself. Author then looks up to this character in hopes one day his life will be just like the Character's...which is a lie and he should've written something more down to earth. Now you know what self insert is. My job here is done. Thanks for reading!

As someone aspiring to be a screenwriter in the future, I see nothing wrong with self inserts. I find no matter what you do or how hard you try to change it, every character will have a little bit of you in it. But seeing how many people hate the personality of this character, I think it's pretty safe to say that not even the writer themselves is likable if this is their self insert.

Yeah, self inserts are usually better versions of the writers/yourself... The scarier part is, the comic ends with Mandy turning into a "better" character without the story acknowledging that she was being super mean to Starfire and Claire let alone shows her apologizing, which in a sense, seems like the writer still tries to point out that both the mother and the crush were the ones who wronged Mandy. If anything, this shows that Mariko Tamaki is the type of person in real life who won't admit to her mistakes or maybe even prone to manipulate other people to make them feel they're the ones who are guilty.
