Imagine how good the story could have been. Mandy is the insufferable girl we all know. Then, she gains powers - the thing she hated others for. And THIS is where the story would truly begin, with her accepting herself as she works towards fixing her past mistakes and slowly getting closer to those around her. And her acceptance wouldn't come from her powers, but rather the character development she got after receiving them. It saddens me how easily this story could have worked. The base work is actually good, the concepts are there, but the execution is so superficial....

A better plot would be that Mandy is severely depressed so she couldn't unlock her emotion-based powers, it could be a journey to opening up to her mother about her problems after distancing herself from her or learning how to be truly happy, with herself and with life. Instead, we get this..

Starfire: Dealt with a homicidal sister who murdered their parents and tried to enslave her (and was enslaved in many continuities) Mandy: Dealt with having a loving and supportive mother who's just trying to help her. Not even in an insensitive way. Starfire trying to help her pick out colleges IS something a lot of parents do. I know a guy who does nothing but self-inserts. Bad ones at that. He'll make some "super original character" for a fandom, someone (me before I just muted him) will point out that character already exists in said fandom (One example was him making basically a Kurogiri from MHA who's a CP9 character from One Piece. Several people pointed out that's just Blueno), and he'll ignore that while trying to insist how original his self-insert is

This person _really_ tried to say this wasn’t a self insert? There is literally an image of the creator wearing the same lipstick shade, nose piercing, same body type and hair. I’m pretty sure even the character’s LGBT status was a self insert. And what’s worse is, instead of presenting her character flaws as something to work past, they just act like it’s normal and acceptable. Like nothing need to change. The only cases that works is with character like the punisher, where you’re not supposed to idolize them. Because even those characters have something to offset them. Some other characters verbally or physically confront them because of what they do, to prove the point that they are a monster. Their bullshit doesn’t just go unchallenged, as if it’s totally normal to behave in such a way. But that’s what “I’m Not Starfire” does. Her bad behaviors aren’t confronted, and her story ends not far from where it started. It is the worse kind of self insert. It is the “my character can do no wrong” self insert.

Last year I bought a tarot deck made by her because I thought her art was actually really pretty , and it IS, I just dont think it works well for a graphic novel and my guess is she was under some tight time restraints due to the nature of working on a graphic novel and that added to it becoming not her best work. The sad thing is is that this would have been fine, if she had gone through some growth and development by the end. You know, realizing she's been a snotty brat, trying to make amends, coming to the conclusion that not having superpowers doesn't make you any less of a person, etc without getting what she wanted. But no, she gets powers and suddenly everything is magically fixed. No one like a protagonist who acts like a brat and never has to face consequences for the things they do or say that any normal person would call them out on. It's just poor writing.

These are the few people willing to talk to her at all. People make a big deal out of them mocking Mandy for stuff, but... in both cases it makes perfect sense. In the one case they're playing a team sport and Mandy just... refuses to play. She doesn't even pretend to try. So she gets griped at for it. I'd do it too. Sure it's not "about winning"... but at the same time.... Mandy was being a selfish brat and ruining the game for everyone. She deserved to be called out for it. And the other one... the girl is like "what is wrong with you?" and people latch on to the use of the world "alien"... but... in context, it's actually just her asking what Mandy's reasoning is, and not even saying being an alien is bad, just asking if that's WHY.

“...she hates superheroes because she isn’t one...”. This has probably been said already, but just imagine replacing “superheroes” with another group of people (such as people of a certain ethnicity, belief system, social status, occupation, etc.) to see how offensive and judgmental that mindset is. If someone online stated, “I hate pizza delivery people because I’m not one,” they would get called out and rightly so. A good story would have the protagonist realize it’s wrong to condemn others simply for being different, not try to justify it or go the “Well, it’s okay if I’m one!” route that this one did. “I hate pizza delivery people. Sure, I am one now, but that’s different because I’m better than the others!”

Which would have been like,,, really interesting to explore. Especially how that led to her apathy and anger. It also would have been way more cool if at the end she didn't gain powers and just automatically become a titan, but starfire was defeated and she trained under nightwing just as a regular human to make sure she could protect her mom the next time someone threatened her now that she understands the biggest insecurity she faced.

"We want more relatable, realistic stories". It's called slice-of-life mangas and they are pretty popular. Gotoubun just ended about 16 months ago and was the most popular romance/slice-of-life manga so far. (I want western comics to actually emphasize character progression with them overcoming their faults, its such a simple thing done in every adventure/fantasy/action manga, especially with ShonenJump. The whole comic just screams out “forced”. I’m not against obese characters or lgbtq characters or emo characters or anything like that. But instead of incorporating it into the story line, or having her overcome her issues it’s just forced. I feel it is kinda society/cancel culture’s fault for making authors think that unless they include an lgbtq character they are homophobic, unless they include an obese character they are fat-phobic, etc. But it is also the author’s fault for including all these things but just unnecessary cramming them into one character and instead of having her work with the issues, overcoming them or learning how to live with them, it just has the character complaining about their first world problems like a self centred, entitled, brat.

Authors often put themselves in their stories. It's a bad habit that even I'm guilty of. But my way of dealing with it is to make something of the self insert a side character. You know, turning him into a villain, ally, becoming a teacher or student, giving the MC a challenge to overcome. Stuff like that. The best writers use the MC to explore different characters and personalities. The worst kind, do what a lot of Comic Industries are doing these days. They do trashy stuff like IM NOT STARFIRE and watch the money burn.

If you know what you're doing and make this self insert into an actual character then there's nothing wrong with making them the MC. It just takes a bit of self awareness and skill to do so, which people making shit characters like dumpsterfire don't have. When making a self insert an important character you need to see your own strengths as well as flaws, which is something you can't do if you always blame everything on others, on 'society'

Here it is: Level 1: Mandy doesn’t know anything about her mom Level 2: Mandy doesn’t know anything about any of her family on that side Level 3: Mandy doesn’t know anything about Tamaran Level 4: Mandy doesn’t know her mother was forced to flee Tamaran after Blackfire did her thing Level 5: *Mandy doesn’t know her mother was a slave, and heavily implied to be r*ped*

His original amateur web comics looking like dog dookie ended up infinitely more popular and marketable than mainstream books made by "professional" writers and professional artists that lean on already sucessful franchises. @@D--fy4wu It's really bad. Mandy (Not-Starfire's name) makes it a point to hate superheroes and even going to college. She was going on and on arguing about the point of college simply because "that's what everyone else does". She refuses to take SAT and even walked out of one. She DESPISES being told what to do. She even befriends another person who proclaimed themself (?) an anarchist and agrees with Mandy. There's also this blonde tanned girl she has a crush on, but then flipped on her for taking a selfie with the Teen Titans. The blonde girl didn't even know what made Mandy so angry. It's through the Anarchist friend that Blonde girl found out Mandy hates superheroes. When she got superpowers after the story's "climactic" incident, we time skipped 1 week later and she starts considering going to college because she gets to be tutored by Raven at the Teen Titans HQ while she does superhero stuff. Apparently, her hatred for college isn't a well-thought out belief ingrained in her, she was just "figuring things out" and she was being told what to do by her mother but it's all okay now that she's a superhero herself. *TLDR moral of the story*: Throw a tantrum until you get superpowers. Only then you start becoming friendly and reasonable. Disclaimer: I didn't read it myself. I watched another KZbinr who did (Dannphan) and she showed it page by page as she gives her own thoughts.

,,I fail to see how an author having physical similarities to the character makes it a self insert..." I am absolutely floored! Self insert means that you're trying to put yourself in the story. This can be achieved in a few ways: 1. Character looks like the author From hair, clothes, weight, accessories and many more. If any of these match the author, then it's a self insert. However it can bear a heavy resemblance (Author and character look like twins) or a Light resemblance (Character shares only one or two features with the author) 2. Character acts like the Author wants to act This means that while the character doesn't look exactly like the author, character acts with no fear or hesitation and is able to solve any problem with relative ease. (Mary Sue) Author here has severe issues with his self worth or self esteem and he feels the need to create a character that is in every way beter than the author himself. Author then looks up to this character in hopes one day his life will be just like the Character's...which is a lie and he should've written something more down to earth. Now you know what self insert is. My job here is done. Thanks for reading!

I hate that all it takes to make a “marketable story” is to pander to Twitter, like they don’t even need to make a well thought out plot line, all they need to do is make a straight character gay and call it “character development” It’s a disgrace to the hard work and talent put in to making genuinely good stories

I hope Starfire's daughter isn't a self insert because that means that the author might be like/act like her in real life.

Well in another video in the comments someone (even i) jokingly said maybe the author is just self projecting and she actually hates her mom.

It absolutely is a self-insert, just look at pictures of the author. I'm sure she has the same personality as Dumpstarfire too.

The scarier part is, the comic ends with Mandy turning into a "better" character without the story acknowledging that she was being super mean to Starfire and Claire let alone shows her apologizing, which in a sense, seems like the writer still tries to point out that both the mother and the crush were the ones who wronged Mandy. If anything, this shows that Mariko Tamaki is the type of person in real life who won't admit to her mistakes or maybe even prone to manipulate other people to make them feel they're the ones who are guilty.

It’s really weird how a tall goddess like star fire could make a daughter so genetically unfortunate.

I like "I am not Starfire" because it actually helps me write my own SI. I know exactly what not to do. Well, that's what I would say if I didn't read any SI fanfics, because those are the common flaws an author writes for his OCSI because he wants it to be "relatable". The only thing that this comic lacks is the "abused/orphan MC" approach.

The story had potential to be decent. Maybe she learned that she is her own person and that she doesn't have to follow the path her mother took. All we got was that she is a spoiled brat who complains and throw tantrums with little to no consequences.

It looks like Mariko Tamaki, the author of I am not Starfire, inserted herself as Mandy Korland'r into the comics to vent about something from her real life. Another SJW with an pc attitude. When are these comic book companies going to learn that this type of thing is costing them a lot of money and that's not going to stop. Comics and related media is not the place for there SJW agendas.Wasn't Raven considered Goth or at least Goth like, why do they need another goth girl?No wonder why DC turned off the comments right off the bat.

Funny part is political correctness is all about how you can't hurt others or have to respect everyone every single second of your time... but apparently being jealous of something you don't have, hating on people who don't think like you, surrounding yourself with people who hate what you hate, and being a nice guy/girl when someone is not into you is totally fine. always the "you have to protect my safe space but I can shit on yours "

The one thing I disagree about the artstyle. The artstyle is fine, I would even go as far as to say it's pretty good. People don't know what they're talking about and just want to stack a bunch of bad things onto its review. It makes taking criticism harder when it's clear people aren't being impartial and wildly attacking all its traits.

I really didn’t, but I’m willing to admitt that it’s probably doing the style it was supposed to do well. I guess I just don’t like the art style in the first place. In fact I would bet it’s pretty polarising.

Garbage art style, stop being a hipster. That shit is something you’d see in a shitty Barbie commercial. Pure dreck. NO one needs to TRY to dislike shit like this, don’t kid yourself. This is “middle bias”. The need to “balance” the things you say based purely on how many things you’ve said before. It’s a trait of people who are scared of being jusged for being honest.

Pre-spider bite Peter Parker was an down trodden ‘Everyman’ any comic book reader could relate to. But in the first issue, he went from picked-on nerd, to arrogant bully, to responsible hero. Today’s SJW authors don’t give us characters who have a developmental arc. Their characters are stuck in Peter Parker as arrogant show biz jerk phase and Uncle Ben never dies.
