She is talking about herself, thinking about how she was - these are both incredibly beautifully sung, both show raw emotion which is appropriate to the song. I prefer Lucy but once again could happily listen to both. Lucy has such clarity and power in her voice.

Katherine's performance was beautiful, very emotional, and very intense. She had some pitch and tone issues there, but, overall, very, very good! That being said, Lucy's vibrato was on display here, her range was incredible, pitch and tone was on point! Lucy took empathy to another level with this; she had her musical, "Rosie", on display as she stepped into this flawed character's role and assumed her identity, this was truly special! This reminded me of both "Suddenly" and "Gentle Breeze" together, with the intense emotion and passion together..........my vote is for the one and only, Lucy Thomas!

Both excellent performances. I prefer Lucy and I guess I am biased because i have followed Lucy for some time and my judgement is coloured by my knowledge of her not only as a singer but as a person with great personality and a drive to master her craft and to be inspiring to those around her. This does not mean that Katharine lacks any of this I am just not as aware of her story. For me, Lucy always comes first, its a consequence of the total experience that adds up to more than just the song. Thanks Jeff for your reaction ☺

Thank you for putting this out. A song of broken love. I had requested the Lucy live version. Only because it shows her stage presence, and voice with no added studio effects. Yes her voice is as pure and precise live. The studio can add things to increase the dynamics, and hide errors. Lucy, even at this young age does not need. This version is stunning. The version played here is also very, very good, not a bad choice. Katharine's stellar performance is world class. She performed it to the world to see for years. And yes just life can add nuances and inflections not possible until they are experienced. You're opinion is valid. I respect your honesty and hope you never change. I'm biased, I'm infatuated with Lucy. I see nothing not to like. This was a marvelous and pleasurable time in my day.. I added a link below to see this live. Not on her site. When it comes to art ( any art) subjectivity is king. You are absolutely right, you can prefer one performance and i can prefer another one. That's the beauty of our world (imagine a world that everyone will drive the same car , with the same color, because everyone like the same car and the same color! ) Personally, Lucy's voice touch my soul more than anyone else. It is why I am a fan of hers. Here she was 14, but her voice is drilling a large hole in my heart everytime i listen to it. Continue the good work. 👍

...and fanatism clouds any subjetivitism. While singing quality is fairly subjective, there is some science behind what is considered good or bad singing. What makes a good singer scientifically is their vocal cords, vocal range, pitch, strength of their voice, breathing technique, ability to sing in tune, age, gender, genetics, and the size of their mouth. All of that is used to stir emotions in the listeners. The more listeners are touched, the better techniques the singer dominates, the better the singer.

I have long been a fan of Katharine’s and Lucy. In this comparison I must say Lucy gave a far superior performance than Katherine. Lucy’s cover was pretty amazing considering she was a young teenager when the video was prepared. The song was originally sung by a woman I believe.

I think Lucy's version is musically and vocally flawless, and Katharine's version is a more intense, theatrical performance. This is what you would expected with Lucy being 14 and Katharine being 34, having played this lead role in the musical both in London's West End and on Broadway, Katharine must have sung this song hundreds of more times than Lucy. I feel that many great singers give their interpretation of songs (often with over the top vocal gymnastics), but that Lucy is a composers dream, as she sings songs like how they are written. I have seen it written elsewhere that Lucy has "all of the reach, with none of the screech".

That's the purpose: it is supposed to be intense and theatrical. It is musical theater. Please, let's get rid of the "young" excuse. She does not need it, she's good enough. This kind of song is not just a matter of singing it: it has to be performed, and the connection is key. Lucy has a great voice and can sing, but that's not enough in this type of music.

This is what I thought. Lucy sang the song very well. Katharine acted it out. That's why there's more connection with her version. Katharine is old enough to regret the loss of her younger self and identify with the song at some level. Lucy is too young to fully appreciate the meaning of the song. She can know what it means intellectually, but it's more difficult for her to feel what it means.

You figured it out. This song is sung by a woman about her younger self that doesn't exist anymore, and she regrets who she's become at least in some ways. She wishes she could return to the person she used to be and do some things a bit differently.

You seem to be interested in comparing Lucy Thomas to various other singers, which certainly has merit. However, focusing on videos from when Lucy was 14 years old rather defeats the purpose. Lucy is 19 now. She has over 50 KZbin videos. If you go to her channel, you can easily see when each was posted. It isn’t a matter of who is better than whom, which is subjective anyway. It’s more to move away from the much less interesting question of whether a kid can sing as well as an adult.

Randy, a 'kid' can out-perform an adult! Lucy did this on virtually EVERY performance when she was 'just' 14 or 15! Does anyone know who Katherine McPhee is? Runner Up American Idol 2006. Lost to Taylor Hicks. Has released 5 albums that all charted on Billboard 200, has done Broadway, has done TV, and has married David Foster. Katherine is a perfect example of where Lucy is heading. This is musical theatre and Lucy can't compete with Morissette in musical theatre or power ballads. Lucy has a great tone and can sing beautifully, but she still lacks the number of techniques and range that Morissette dominates. Lucy is a great singer, but there was no storytelling in this performance. Anyone can see that. Why it is not fair to compare anyone to Morissette Amon? Vocal range (5 octaves, master of the whistle register), power, breath control, story-telling ability, can rap, dance, and a tone suitable to all music genres. @@anthonyl.6879 When you say "music is subjective" what you're really saying is that you've decided to set the threshold for what constitutes an objective statement at an arbitrary point higher than some other people. If you invoke subjectivity to dismiss someone's analysis, realize that subjectivity could be invoked to dismiss literally anything, up to and including the very existence of the universe in which we live. This is not a black-and-white argument. No. Lucy's range is not even close to 3 octaves. The pop artist with the widest vocal range was Mariah Carey (5 octaves). Morissette Amon is the only one in that area. Whitney Houston was 3 octaves and 2 notes. Lucy cannot belt like Whitney and hasn't demonstrated she can access the whistle register. Morissette Amon can. That is not subjective, it is all over KZbin for you to hear. I agree with all of Lucy's fans that she is great.
