I used relaxers from middle school until 2009 when I stopped using relaxers. Suffered from horrible menstrual cycles and fibroids for years. If only I had known. The kicker is that the models used on the perm boxers were getting their hair flat ironed.... not putting chemicals in their hair. Used for marketing purposes

Black women were always seen to have fibroids and breast cancer at much higher rates than other groups studied. Now we find that relaxers are why. Now that's the price Black women have to pay for straight hair. What a kick in the teeth is what it took. And the hair Nature intended for us to wear will be finally accepted!

Fibroids and cancer don’t occur from hair relaxers. Explain the millions of women who relax and don’t have fibroids or cancer…

Some of it is genetics. My grandmother had breast cancer and never had a relaxer ever in her life. Her daughter/my aunt also had it. Doctors will tell you if it runs in your family, you are at a higher risk.

Okay but, I know people with issues like these and needed a hysterectomy too and never used a relaxer…I’m natural but I don’t believe this was from a relaxer. Ever though I do believe relaxers can cause health issues, however there’s no proof that a relaxer caused this for her.

The interesting thing is Aaliyah stopped relaxing her hair early in her career. She pressed her hair straight. I found that when I had a relaxer it was more difficult for me to do things like swimming because my relaxed hair + chlorine = breakage.

I have never had pain with my cycle before. Beyond that first time it came on. Even with relaxers. I wonder if this is why my friends always say they are on the floor with pain. They all do weird stuff to change their hair texture

Not necessarily. I had painful periods before I ever got a relaxer. Then during and after I stopped relaxing. I also have other symptoms besides pain like headaches, nausea and diarrhea. My cycles have always been irregular where I might have two periods in a month or not have one for five months. My doctors put me on birth control to regulate my cycle and decrease the cramps.
