Lara speaks several languages perfectly: Italian (the language of her mother, she lived in Sicily till she became 6), French (her father is Belgian, and she lived there from 6 till 20 years and later in the Quebec region of Canada which is francophone), Flemish (the other language of Belgium), English (the other language of her now home country Canada) and Spanish. She sang in many other languages, including Turkish and Russian, and to the native speakers, just with a little accent.

@Ammxr Great reaction ! “Je suis Malade” was written by famous French singer & songwriter Serge Lama together with composer/singer Alice Dona in 1973. This is based on his own experience and he was the original performer, hence some lyrics are a bit male-oriented (eg my mother leaves me, whiskies, I pour my blood in your body, …). When Serge Lama had a dinner with Alice Dona and told her about his obsessive love that was leading to a road block, she came back home and compose the music in a couple of hours. The morning after, she presented him the music and he wrote the lyrics in … 20 minutes. Serge Lama was the original performer in 1973, it started to be promoted on the radio, and the song was brought to fame only when, a few months after, Dalida covered it. She was an absolute mega star in France, another emotional powerhouse, and this song resonated very much with her own feelings. Her success with this song transformed it into a french classic, and started to make it famous abroad. But it is Lara Fabian that really made this song a very popular song in many countries with her cover in the mid 90s. At that time Dalida had already passed away, but Serge Lama was (and is) still alive. Dalida and Serge were two inspirations for Lara, so she sent an audio copy to Serge of her version. She was unknown at that time in France but he was so impressed with her vocal skills and her emotions rendering that he invited her in France to sing it as a duet. They became good friends. Lara has made some subtle changes to the song that gave it even more power and Serge Lama adopted these in his later interpretations. Other recommendations i’d suggest for Lara Fabian would be (still from that same concert “From Lara with Love”) Adagio, Caruso, Broken vow, Perdere l’amore, and You’re not from here. Then move on to other major performances like Mademoiselle Hyde, Je t’aime (Live in Paris in 2002), Extrait de Yentl, Ave Maria, and Je me souviens (Live from Les Plaines D’Abraham in 2010) amongst the long list of amazing performances she delivered over the last 30 or so years…

Hi Ammar, I liked your reaction and subscribed, hoping to see more Lara reactions. To respond to your question: the most amazing is that this is a cover. Lara is a very talented songwriter, writes and co-composes most of her songs in several languages (english, french, italian and spanish). But this one is from 2 famous french singers from the early 70s: Alice Dona composed the music and Serge Lama wrote the lyrics and was the original performer. Dalida, a french/egyptian singing legend, then made a cover very shortly after and brought the song to fame. Lara came only 15 years later but added some tweaks of her own: for instance the acapella section or the sentence "cet amour me tue". This made the song even more dramatic and Serge Lama found this brilliant additions so he adopter these in his later interpretations of his own song. Lara is the one and only able to emote and illustrate the meaning of every single word. She draws you in instantaneously and connects you to the song emotions. There are songs where she exposes more of her unique vocalist skills but this is never at the expense of the song storytelling, it always has a purpose. Hello Lara’s rendition is the best and will never be equaled. But I would like to introduce you to a 4 male crossover harmony group callrd “ Forestella” from South Korea. When they performed their first song ( the Freddy Mercury classic“ Bohemian Rhapsody”) it catapulted them to international stardom and they now have millions of followers worldwide. They were all at one time solo performers. One has a very deep bass/baritone voice. Another, a high operatic voice, and the other two group members (who were also solo performers at one time) combine to render “je suis malade” a confluence of absolute total passion and performed live on stage in front of thousands of fans. I thought no one would ever come close to Lara’s soulful rendition. And no one vocalist will. But when you have 4 members and the best vocal harmony group in the world, well. ( all I can say is have your Kleenex handy) Some of their other songs I recommend are Simon & Garfunkel classic “The Sound Of Silence”, Guardian “ Angel” that will lift your spirits and transport you to another world-especially during these troubled covid times. And the hauntingly beautiful “ hijo de la luna” But “ Le Suis” remains my all time favorite. I’ve watched it 5 times and each and every time it moves me to my depths.
