I kinda love when people have a pocket character or a "lowtier" they love and then they find some DIRTY shit and single handedly makes people realize that bitch is broken. Shit like that makes me so happy. Especially when they hold that shit for tourney

These character retrospectives have easily become my favorite videos on the channel. I remember watching a ton of P4A as a new casual FGC viewer back in the day, so it's very cool to be nostalgic about the game while learning a bunch of stuff that went over my head at the time

Man I love the phrase “This doesn’t belong in modern fighting games.” Especially for a game I remember watching in my youth all the time. So much tech I wasn’t aware of back then. I know P4U didn’t have much of the same scene as P4A but I can’t wait for a retrospective of that because I hear it’s some grade A kusoge.

I was not expecting this content this far down the line but this is some good stuff here. Great explanation on why S-Lab was messed up and going over the many situations she could put you in. I did not like fighting this every other week when myself and a few others were grinding this game with BananaKen. Axis, Miller and I knew how messed up this character was but as you said; others did not or weren't sold on it until more people saw how crazy things could get with the character. Another note: I'm not a fan of my commentary in the UFGT set, you can probably tell with how rough it was since it was my first time doing it EVER, I was more of a spectator than commentator here lol.

Age of Empires 4 just came out, and it is legitimately interesting to see how differently that community approaches tier lists. For them, it seems that a tier list is a snapshot in time, and they update them regularly as the game gets figured out. In the FG having a character go from bottom tier to top tier speaks to a fault in the earlier list. In the RTS genre (or just AoE4 specifically?) it just speaks to how knowledge about a certain faction has changed over time.

Props for still giving the ggs and shaking hands. I’m so used to seeing salty smash player compilations and that I kinda forgot how you’re supposed to act even when you lose like that in a tourney. Didn’t even know Labrys could combo into that IK but good on him for pulling it off in a tourney!

Really glad to see all this P4U content recently! I didn't know what a fighting game OR persona was when this/P4U2 came out so I never got to experience it in its prime I'm still holding out for a sequel or port but knowing people still care about the game is enough

I remember seeing the Shadow Labrys IK in Grand Finals the first time and thinking "man, it's nice to see LK get blown up for once' Current me can only think, with this knowledge, that Shadow Labrys is mad goofy unfun and happy to see LK staying winning after all this time.

I just came from watching the "Why Labrys is bad" video, and I kind of just had a realization. In a way, both of the Labrys's are about momentum and resource-management. Labrys is just mostly internal with the axe levels (and bad), while Shadow Labrys is external with managing Asterius, Persona cards, Burst, and Meter. Most characters outside of Elizabeth could still relatively play without their persona in the first Arena, but Shadow Labrys lived and died by making sure you kept Asterius healthy and punching while watching for your own chance to use your Awakening specials. I can say with experience, I don't know if I've played any other fighting-game character that felt so good to take damage as. Since every hit point taken off gets you closer to Awakening and gets you Meter, which is exactly what you want for your strongest form, it's like you're getting a refund from your opponent every time you take damage. You almost feel yourself getting stronger until you get to just BURST all that payout right at the end of your lifebar when you should feel weakest.

I always hate feeling like I have to convince people that fighting games constantly evolve. You don't just play for a few weeks or months even.. and say "People have pretty much figured out all the characters" and conversations that revolve around games needing immediate patches. People are still finding tech in old arcade fighters. I wish there was more discussion on these kinds of things. So that the precedent is set. The FGC, especially the new/younger FGC. Should embrace growing alongside their games. We see unsung heros and characters all the time.

Right, Shadow Labrys came with the original P4A, before the concept of a 'shadow version' of every character came with P4A2. She was the final boss, and her differences from regular labrys (regulabrys) were the basis of every shadow character. ...So youre right, but also shes the OG.

This is just more proof of why day 1 impressions or even month 1 impressions of characters are basically always (extremely) inaccurate to some degree, much less entire tier lists. This only gets more true the more the playstyle of the character in question diverges from the game's default mechanics. Having an impression is inevitable, but the sheer amount of people who act like theirs is definitive and there's nothing to ever be explored or improved upon has always been rather annoying. I would say it's weird that such "definitive" takes have continued into a time where patches and DLC characters exist, but that's humanity for you, so I'm not actually surprised. Bitching about humanity aside, it's always nice to see Shadow Labrys even if Titanomachia is kinda dumb. A bit funny how that move is dirtier than Fire Break despite its inputs and ending being blockable (unless it's the command grab).
