Sheaffer Snorkel Restoration (Part 1)

Messed up a snorkel restore year ago...recent pen lot purchase had a snorkel desk pen, UGH, I thought..until I watched this video I & II...Hey, I can do this! Tnx for the great tips and step by step help. Still had repair kit from David Nishimura...SUCCESS!! Am using an Esterbrook 8-ball holder for it. Only thing I didn't do was shellac nib into barrel...not a problem. This = pen restore #146 for me. Vintage Sheaffer pens RULE! ZERO problems with all from 1920s jade greens to touchdowns and Fineline lever fills....Keep up the great videos and THANKS for sharing your knowledge with us!!

Glad to hear Andy! My first love in fountains are 51s, but this type of restoration makes me appreciate Sheaffers (snorkels particularly).

lemon53135, if you are talking about at approx. 9:00, that brown liquid is regular Zinsser bulls-eye wood shellac. It is a time tested means of attaching rubber sacs and sealing parts in fountain pens because when it dries it is not soluble with water(in turn also ink-proof), and it can be softened with gentle heat application to allow taking apart what it has been used on.

Thanks! I got mine from my grandpa, who hasn't replaced any of the parts since he bought it in 1953, which is probably around the same time yours came from. So you probably have a good idea of why it needs repair. Haha. It holds no ink anymore.

If you want the sac to be assured of staying attached and leak free, you MUST use some sort of adhesive. Shellac is the safest and most accepted for the safety of the pen parts and maintaining water tightness. If you don't use it more than likely the sac will come off and cause leakage IF it even fills with ink at all. Is there a reason why you don't want to use shellac? It is a fairly common and readily available item, so if you don't have it at hand wait on your repair 'til you do.

I know the video is a few years old but hopefully you see this, i just picked up this exact model at a garage sale and im looking for more information on it, it came with a white marble base and its in pretty rush shape. Im still an amateur when it comes to FPs but i think im going to attempt to restore this one myself. ANy info and tips would be appreciated.

Do you know where I can find the plastic piece that the metal sac protector was crimped around?

Is there a different way to attach it? I mean, does it need that, or can you just put it over the plug and not use anything on it?

I ordered all my parts (including Shellac) from a website called Pendemonium today. Thanks for posting these videos. Its gonna help. Any advice on how to make a sac spreader?

double u,double u, double u, dot etsy dot com/listing/58606329/parker-fountain-pen-ink-sac-spreader, shows a good image of a spreader. Made mine from thick gauge wire paper clip. Straighten out clip and bend it like the picture. You don't have to have the loop like this one does, just use all straight bends. Essentially like a reverse pair of pliers, instead of clamping down when you press the handles together, it spreads the 'jaws' apart thus spreading the opening of the sac. Good luck!
