In this tutorial, we try to draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for a beam with a hinge. We utilize most of the tricks we know from structural analysis and statics to draw the V and M diagrams.

Abdulrahman, the answer is yes. the moment at the hinge is always zero since its mechanism does not permit the development of internal moment. So, the moment is always zero. Eid Mubarak Yours Admin

the hinge does not have a "direct" effect on the load distribution. the effects comes in play when calculating the moment, shear force, and deflection. Moreover, the presence of the hinge will reduce the size of the beam since it will divide the beam into segments which ultimately leads to lower moments due to shorter lengths.

if you are referring to the horizontal reaction at A, this reaction is set to zero since all the forces acting on the member are vertical. hope that clarifies the concept.

caould you please do a video on any of these topics? conjugate beam, energy method and superposition for beams? I have an exam in 10 days and although I have studied the material, I'm still struggling. I have looked at many videos, and out of about 10 videos on this specific topic, found yours most informative, clear and to the point. your explainations are wonderful and thorough and as with any matter of mind, once understandood it is no longer difficult. thank you sir for your time.god bless.

the 1/2*6*6 is the area of the triangular load which will convert the distributed load to a concentrated one. remember, when you have a distributed load, calculate the area represented by the load (in this case is a triangle) and that should give you the equivalent point load. in the case of uniformly distributed load (rectangular), the area is the load value multiplied by the distribution length (that is the width times the height which is the area of the rectangle) hope that was clear :)

you are right but there is a huge difference between explaining the problem and doing the problem. when I explain it, I try to imagine every single question that might come up to the one who is watching and try to somehow answer it. but, if I am doing the problem, it will take me 10 minutes to go through it and then the tutorial is pointless. Adrian munoz for the -12 moment, you can easily calculate it from the right hand side since you have a single applied force at the tip of the beam at poit D ( 6 * 2 ) clockwise (i.e. negative)

Hey, at x=12 for the moment equation you don't get 12. You get -96. That equation M(x) you derived should only work untill x=9 ft because at x=9ft the shear jumps. How can you use integration to get that value 12 for moment at x=12 ft

Adrian munoz the moment equation is good for the length where the distributed load is applied. so you can apply the moment equation from 0 to 9. as for the -12 moment, you can easily calculate it from the right hand side since you have a single applied force at the tip of the beam at poit D ( 6 * 2 ) clockwise (i.e. negative)
