Homework questions: Question 1: given qu = 120 kpa Normal stress = qu/2 Normal stress = 60kpa Question 2: given failure angle = 60 C=0(cohesionless soil) Sigma 3 = 150 Equation use sigma 1 = 150 tan^2(60) We get ans sigma 1= 450 kpa Question 3: given qu = 120kpa Sigma c = 40 kpa Sigma d = 160 kpa Equation use C = qu /2 = 120/2 = 60 Sigma 1 = sigma 3 tan^2 (alfa f) + 2C tan (alpha f) Solve the equation we get sigma 1= 50.01 Question 4 given data SigmaC = 200kn/m^2 F =342N Dia = 38mm Length = 76mm Deformation = 5.1mm Sigma n = 100kn/m^2 Step1 : find af by using formula = A/1- strain We get Af = 0.00121 Step 2: sigma d = f/a = 282.64kn/m^2 Then calculate phi by using formula sigma1- sigma3/(sigma1 +sigma3) Then using Equation shear strength= sigma n tan(phi) +C (here c=0) Then we get shear strength= 45.4kpa
