Shearing a Pygora goat

Shearing a Pygora Goat is easy with practice. Timing of shearing depends on many factors which include, the individual goat, fleece type, weather, and location. In the Pacific Northwest we find that shearing in September and October works well for us especially before the cold and rainy weather settles in. We might also shear right before kidding season depending on the individual goat. Those we don't shear, we will "crutch" the girls back ends and udders to keep the fleece from getting messy during kidding season. The best rule of thumb as to when to shear is when you go out to your barn and say, "Wow, look at that beautiful fleece". It is probably time to shear!

I just learned about (and met) my first Pygora goats to day at the Shenandoah Fiber Festival. I had never heard of them before. Thank you for showing how to shear. I thought shearing would be much more difficult than that.

You are right in planning for shearing when the the weather warms up and again right before the weather cools down (October). I've sheared all the way through November if the weather is mild. It's amazing how quickly the fleece starts coming back as the weather gets colder. You will want to keep an eye on shedding or matting as it can happen so fast. You want to shear when you go out to the barn and say, "Wow, what beautiful fleeces, I wonder if I should shear ". 3-6" is a good length.

I have been looking into goats for a while now. I'm pretty much set on having two of your Pygora Weathers to add to my Kinders. I noted you said in your comments that shearing depends on many factors. Here in So. Calif our weather is pretty stable however I live at almost 2900 ft level. I'm thinking if I have to shear a Type A/B or Type A once when it warms up then again just before the weather cools down (about October give or take). Thoughts?
