James on your Teric go to menu, settings, display, then time outs, set it to No Motion then go to time out time and set it to 1 or 5 min, done. The Teric will stay on for the time reading. The only way it times out is if you don’t move your wrist for more of the time you set it up. Your welcome! Love everything you do for us! Love from Orlando.

I currently have the MK2i. I love all of the functions the Garmin has BUT for scuba diving, it is sub-par to the Teric. The screen on the Garmin is too dim under water the screens are annoying because you have to swap screens constantly the transmitter makes an ANNOYING sound (unless wearing a wetsuit hood) Then you can't hear it Most importantly, the transmitter will sometimes read incorrect PSI. I just went out to 120ft with a 3100 psi tank but the Garmin read it as 2500. AND the Pressure will intermittently loose connection with the watch I used the Teric before the Garmin MK2i came out but sold it to buy the Garmin. I wish I would've kept it. The Garmin is best for someone that wants an everyday use watch and free-dives, but for people that are diving deeper than 40 ft of water and NEED reliable dive gear. STICK WITH SHEARWATER

Agree 100%. I have both, and agree completely with the trade-offs you identified. Garmin is my every day watch, Teric is my secondary dive computer. Or maybe when I’m diving the Teric is my primary, and the Garmin is my secondary. But at the end of the dive, the Teric comes off, and the Garmin stays on. Both are GREAT watch-style dive computers. Thanks for the very honest, even-handed review.

Battery life is "superb" if you hold it on the charger at all times. I was just diving with a buddy and he forgot to charge his Garmin overnight the way he usually does and his died during our dive. Thankfully it's his backup, his Perdix is the primary. He uses AI with both.

@@brois841 How long had he gone without charging it? The MK2i does not need charging daily unless you are really doing a lot of stuff with it...music, GPS, stuff the Shearwater doesn't do.

Great video. I own both of these, but we have a few Terics in our house with my wife and daughters. I do use my Garmin daily for all the reasons you stated. When it comes to diving, the screen vs battery is critical. Another thing is how the Garmin is limited in how much you can customize the dive screen. The Teric allows you to make some choices in terms of the information you see. That said, the Garmin gives you gps location for your dives, which is cool. Sadly, I continue to want to use my Perdix because I absolutely HATE the chirp from the Garmin transmitter. The one thing I can point out is that I had the Garmin fail me with the air integration during a mine diving situation. I don’t know if it was the sonar bouncing off the walls, etc. but ever since those dives I started liking my Garmin less.

Does the GPS work under water or only surface? I think the display is a YUUUGGGEE difference! I'm torn between these 2 here and the Perdix 2.

I found a fix for the chirping noise, if you connect a hp hose to the transmitter and throw it in your trim pocket on the bc it still transmits and the noise is nearly completely silent.

The Garmin may? scratch but it is tough. I literally was run by a Ram 1500 pickup while riding my bicycle. Broke my scapula in two places. Face, arms, and legs scratch, torn, ripped. The case around my Garmin watch has really scratched up. The screen? no scratch. The watch band I had to replace. The insurance company bought me a new Garmin MK2i as I was afraid the Garmin watch might be damaged. Still works great. No issues. Yes the case is scratched really bad but I wear it for workouts and my new Garmin with the titanium band for daily wear. I wear both for diving. I do wish the screen was brighter but diving on the Oriskany at 124 ft I could see the watch face perfectly. Diving in the silty, murky local quarry with 5-10 ft vis, I can see the watch face just fine. Basically if I can see the watch I can read the data. I do love how easy it is to change the straps. I can go with a normal strap for everyday wear and warm water diving. I can easily add the longer strap for wearing with a wet or dry suit. Even the titanium strap has a secret extension that allows me to wear it over my wet suit sleeve. I'm glad you mentioned the chirping. I heard that sound for the first time this past weekend and had no idea what that was. Great review.

I have the Garmin. The audible air sensor technology is truly audible, and I wish it wasn’t there at all. For some, that makes the decision obvious… However, the gps function is cool on the dive log. It puts pins on the dive log map for where you go in and where you come out. And then you can look at a map of all of your dives! Super cool. That plus the battery life gives the Garmin a win.

I got the Perdix AI as I suffer with eyesight issues. I spoke to my LDS who’s a Shearwater & Garmin retailer and shearwater where the company who came back and said to use the Perdix AI even over the more expensive Teric, Garmin didn’t email back ( when the mk1 was out ) A friend of mine has exchanged their Teric for a MK2i and has voiced the concerns about the transmitter and can’t figure out if he can turn it off, so he thinks he’ll be going back to the Teric… Great video as always James. Unbiased and full of knowledge!

I want to share my personal thoughts. For me a dive computer should be the most reliable piece of tech that I need to entrust myself underwater. For enjoying rides and runs, snowboarding or whatever, I have a Garmin watch. But underwater I have priority to have reliability, be bright, and be a piece of tech for divers. I’m sorry, but a Garmin watch won't last for years, probably 4 or 5 and that's it. Yes, probably 4 or 5… but not as long as a dive computer could last (my perdix is 7 years and it is still like new!), instead of my garmin watches that after 3 years you need to change because of batteries, slowness, issues.. (and I always buy top models from them, and I’m a Garmin enthusiast for running and biking). Thank you for the review, but if you are a diver, please look at a real dive computer and not a fancy one to have a whatsapp notification underwater.

I have had both watches. Kind of feel you did some of the categories a disservice. The Garmin Dive app is hands down the better app. Also the Teric can charge on any chi wireless charger, you don’t have to use the cradle. Which makes it easy to travel with as you can use a wireless charger you use for your phone for the watch as well. All in all I prefer the Garmin. I haven’t had any durability issues like you discuss. I’m in the military and it’s held up perfectly fine.

Re the Teric charger, I had a problem with my rapidly dying Teric battery, and when I sent it to the (TERRIFIC) Shearwater tech support out in Snohomish, WA, he was great. Called me to discuss what he found, and had some solid recommendations; very strongly recommended against using third party chargers, as they tend to overcharge the battery and kill battery life. He completely rebuilt my Teric with a new battery, new circuit board, and several other features. Also sent me a flat Shearwater chi charger (I think used by the Peregrine?), which solves the wonky Teric cradle issue. All covered by the Shearwater warranty. I was blown away by the service. So I love my Teric, but I wear my Garmin Mk2i as my primary dive computer and every day smart watch, with the Teric as my secondary computer. Probably an overly expensive back up, but any discussion of diving and cost (especially coupled with underwater photography…) is a pointless debate.

I would take Perdix really. Both are great but the thing I cannot see the time on Teric unless press the button is crazy. Other than that Teric wins due to the price because I have an elegant watch already. Battery is ok. It is not like Sunnto D5 when you need charge it every night but you need to charge it every week so Teric is ok for me the buttery is no issue and I prefer bright screen.

Hello James! Great video, but I believe you missed the most important comparison of all. Customer service / Product support. Know in all fairness, I do not own a Garmin. I do however own the Perdix AI and the Teric. My Teric was close to two years old. Was because Shearwater just replaced my old Teric with a brand new one. I kept loosing Comms on dives so through my dive shop, we reported the problem to Shearwater, after a few emails back and forth and in less than a weeks time frame. Shearwater asked for my old one and they sent me a brand new computer. I’m curious if any of your other followers had any similar experiences with Garmin? The Garmin has great features, but when it comes to product support / customer service. My experience, Shearwater will win every time!

Just a quick note on the Garmin straps. My wife has a Garmin sport watch which seems to have the same type of straps as the Descent. She needed to change the original because they broke. But the new one she bought kept detaching; she had the buy 2 other sets before having one pair that stayed on. I wouldn't want that to happen when I'm 100 feet underwater, my wife and I wish that Garmin made straps with screws. For me Shearwater wins this category ;-)

Interesting, I've been wearing a Garmin Fenix 6X since they came out and I've never had an issue with the strap coming loose, motorcycling (including one wreck), running, swimming, diving, hiking, etc. Was it a Garmin band or one of the many knockoffs on Amazon and was it the right size, they actually make a few. Just my thoughts. Still agree the Teric is amazing.

Found your videos recently, as I am about to get back in the water after something of a hiatus due to global events. Travel in Asia has only recently started to open up properly, so heading to take the TDI Sidemount/Deco Procedure/Advanced EANx courses I first booked 2.5 years ago! While my primary has been a Perdix for several years, I was still using my old D4i as my backup rec computer. Decided to replace with the Descent MkIIs based on your reviews and my experience with Garmin in the past. Both use the same algorithm so will be interesting to see if they have an argument :D. I already have AI with the Perdix so I wanted the backup to be independent of that. Except for a some local dives, this will be the first actual dive trip in a couple years so looking forward to refreshing old skills and learning new ones!

So, i just want to follow up on my previous comment having used the Teric, Perdix and Descent now - and this comment is just aimed at the 'how easy is this to get to do the thing I want it to do out of the box' comment. You need to do a lot more prep work with the Garmin than the Teric. The Garmin is an incredible device but the UI is not intuitive and mistakes like accidentally locking yourself in Gauge mode for 24 hours are very easy to make unless your careful. You should always thoroughly familiarise yourself with Dive Equipment before use of course, you are just going to need to spend a lot more time with the Garmin than the Teric.

I have the Perdix AI and the Mk1 Descent and after a few years, here is my take: AI, the only use I see is that it makes your SAC calculations easy, I never rely on it during the dive, in fact I removed it from my twin set (one more failure point, one more point of entanglement), nothing beats the SPG and the good habit of checking often. I wear a watch every day and I do use it as a smartwatch, so Garmin is the logical choice. On my scheduled dives, Perdix is the primary, Garmin is my secondary, both same settings and GF, never seen any difference. If I have an unscheduled rec dive, I can always do it in with the Garmin. Battery life, I charge the Garmin every 10 days if not diving. When I dive, I always charge before so it is not important. When I bought the Garmin, I set a rule to not dive with battery life less than 30%, never had reached that even in weeklong boat dives, but I did buy an extra charging cable. If I was buying today, I would get the Garmin MkII with no AI again. Do you need 2 computers for casual rec diving with a buddy? No, it's a nice to have and if something goes wrong with one, you can go on with the dive, otherwise you will end the day (never happened to me though). Do you need a Perdix for rec diving? no, it’s an overkill. Do you need 2 computers for tec or solo rec diving? Absolutely yes.

Thanks for a very informative video. I've been eyeing the Teric for awhile and have just been loaned a 'Demo Not for Sale' model to try out. The super bright screen is a big plus for me with my deteriorating eyesight. (just natural ageing, nothing serious) but if I must be perfectly honest, I think the Teric is getting long in the tooth. While I may not ever need all the gazillion functions that the Garmin has, I feel that the Teric should at very least have GPS functionality. There must surely be a new, improved version - on the drawing board at least.

Good, and fair, review and comparison. Two comments, 1. I have a Teric and a Perdix and I prefer the teric. I find the screen much more readable and the button use much simpler even when doing tech dives. (I both when tech diving). 2. You did not add a relative comparison of customer support, you mention it but did not formally evaluate the Garmin support. This is a major factor for me as Shearwater has bought my loyalty with their amazing support for products.

I feel the Teric charging is more advantageous as you can use any Qi rated instead of a proprietary clip charger that can be lost or damaged. I do agree though the little cup shearwater ships with is a bit goofy? The the ubiquitous availability of Qi I just find more appealing. What I did learn from your video was all of the additional features of the Mark II that emulate a typical smartwatch. I was aware of all the activity apps but not the additional apps. Having dived both for years, and putting more than 500 dives on each. My preference is still the Garmin. Battery Life is light-years better. More technologically advanced to provide sound dive data both physiologically and scientifically (graphical interfaces with overlays are extremely valuable and immediate). GPS I use every dive; ability to track any diver at the surface through Connect. Sonar sensor is years ahead of the MH8A sensors made by Pelagic (used by SW, Oceanic, AquaL, etc)-- range is easy up to 30ft. Calculation of RMV/SAC/ATR for multiple divers (from pro side).. list goes on. The titanium band is also superb. I like the Teric, but it is legacy in Tech at this point. The only thing changing is UI features and colors. Again, I used it for years, and it hasn't seen water in the past 2. That was just the diving related components...

The Garmin literally has sonar air integration so you can read divers air from 10m away and eliminates risk of a diver surprising you with an out of air scenario, youll catch it way in advance without the human error of someone lying or mistaking how much air they have or you misreading their hand signal, or needing to make them show you air when your battling current at depth (biggest cause of low air scenarios in my experience). Its objectively superior. And even has the benefit of knowing when looking for s lost diver if they are within 10m of you.

I find that hard to believe.. my Garmin Felix 5S Plus Titanium DLC with Sapphire Crystal glass looks like the day I bought it and it’s been knocked, banged, dropped, everything. I’m not sure how many years old this is. It was around $1000 when I bought it. I have a Tempe I clip to whatever so my body temp doesn’t influence the temperature. It’s definitely a watch/Fitbit/gps/heart monitor.

Nice video, as always James. But, since this is about a dive computer, I would like to know if the mk2 has, for example, @+5, delta+5, GF99, SurfGF, and Ceiling, features that have made sherwater a top brand among technical divers. Also, do they let the diver change GF on the run? I think so, but is not clear to me. I've been a Shearwater user for many years, but no the teric.

AFAIK no watch style dive computer has that functionality. However, if you do a lot of ocean dives you could consider investing in the garmin inreach mini for that which will pair and work effortlessly together with your mk2i watch!

James, thanks for the video, I have a question though. I have been looking at the garmin as I am getting to the age where if I want to continue diving I need to keep myself in reasonable condition (COVID did nothing to help me with this). So here I am with my new Garmin descent mk2 and my Perdix. Very happy with the sport and fitness on the MK2 but when I tried the planner I was confused. Air dive 45m dive for 15 mins on the perdix gives me a planned run time of 32 mins, first deco at 12m, on the MK2S I have a run time of 4306 (assume seconds = 71 mins), with a first stop at 27m, the Garmin has a 2 min descent time, but even setting the Perdix to a 17 min bottom time results in a run time of 38 mins and first deco at 15m. So given that info I would expect you to say that the gradient factors were different, but both are set to 40/85. Am I doing something wrong? Have I misinterpreted the planning screen? I tried the planner to test the algorithm and have found that they are different. I have completed the same plan with Baltic and results are very close to the Perdix, I am now questioning the Garmin for obvious reasons. Still I will see what the results are on an actual dive. Many thanks for the videos so far, please can we have a short video on the planning capabilities on both computers, as no deco plan, no gas plan.
@leeminter8825
@leeminter8825 2 жыл бұрын
Ok, great news, I updated the software on my Garmin Descent MK2 and now the planner produces comparable results with my Perdix, not the same but comparable. Thanks again for the video. One thing about Garmin though, they do need to send their marketing department on some training, I was going to bore you with a list of inaccuracies in some of their content, but got bored. Oxygen Tanks!!!. Very happy with my purchase post update though.

If you want a multifunction watch the Garmin is very good. But if you just want a computer to dive and you are not so young anymore and don't see that well under bad condition, the Teric is way better. You put this subject on your video for less than 5 seconds (I guess you have excellent eyes) but that is something VERY important.

My life would be easier if Apple just made a dive watch, but with that said it's interesting how much better the charging capabilities are on the Garmin even if I wouldn't use all those features or wear it as a daily watch, but they are a brand known for their watch range on land too.

Thanks for this video! I love your videos, they're great! I still have a huge dilemma. I've never used air integration but getting more certified and experienced (I'm only Rescue Diver with just 6 years experience of holiday diving), I wonder if it's something I'll need. I'm getting my Nitrox cert next week. Hands down, when it comes to design and size, I'd completely choose the Mk2S. The Mk2i looks and feels too bulky for me. But will I regret not having the air integration? (Note that I intend this computer to be for the foreseeable future, also have my Suuto Zoop that will become my secondary). To be fair, the pieces of functionality that attract me the most to Garmin is the compatibility with the inreach mini which I'd very much like to get as I've already been lost in the sea for 6h and it was not a great experience not being found by the saving team, to use it as an every day multi sports watch and all the other smart watch fun functions. I know that everything I'm mentioning, including comfort due to size, drives me straight to the Mk2S but will I regret not having the air integration!?? HELP!!

I have a Perdix AI and a Garmin descent MK2S (recently upgraded from a sun to D5) I use AI for my recreational dives as it is the lazy way of getting an understanding of your personal SAC rate. I always have a gauge on my regs anyway, so this is the only advantage for me.

It depends what you are looking for, if you are searching for a dive computer that you can also wear during your dive trip, this video will help you to decide. But if you are looking for a smart watch that you will wear everyday for a whole year then I suggest you go for the Mk2s. I made this choice and I ' fully satisfied. Mk2i & teric are too big for that matter.

My Garmin tends to read about 50psi lower than my mechanical SPG, but it is consistently a bit lower, so I factor that into my decisions as I monitor my dive. Not a big deal from my perspective. For what it’s worth, the Garmin tends to read water temp a couple of degrees F cooler than my secondary computer (and dive buddies’ different make computers). It too is consistent, so I take that into account when I have to decide wetsuit thickness.
