It looks like Dale was on fire here, but really he was very consistent through out his years with the Sonics. Very underrated shooter. Better than most today.

Top 10 shooter of all-time and you don't see him brought up often enough. Just lights-out everywhere, except at the FT line. Could score really well at his best, some really good scoring seasons with tremendous shooting efficiency.
@frzzlfry668 жыл бұрын
He shot 78% from the free throw line for his career, with 87% being his best for a season. That's not up there with the best in history, but still much better than average. A lot of people who are strictly NBA fans don't realize that he was pretty much exclusively a post player in college--and a very, very good one at that. When he was at Tennessee, he regularly matched up against the likes of Bobby Lee Hurt, Dominique Wilkins, Charles Barkley, etc... and was a two-time All-American doing it.

Awesome! Thanks for this video. That playoff run by the Sonics is one of my favorite all-time basketball memories. That team with it's big 3 of Chambers, Ellis and X, lost a lot of games but had a lot of great moments too. You never knew when one of them would explode for 40. They somehow managed to put it all together in the '87 post season advancing to the Western finals, despite finishing the season with a losing record.

The beginning of a decade of Seattle basketball prosperity. The teams of the late 70s and early 80s had hit hard times the previous few years- they never recovered from blowing the Moody Madness game and fell off in 1985/1986. New blood like Ellis came on to fill the shoes of Seattle hoops heroes. While they didn't make it past the second round for a few years, you saw the beginning of something special up in the Emerald City. Sometimes, you can't help but wonder if Ellis had stayed on with the Payton/Kemp squads that followed.

Technically he was with kemp and Payton in Seattle later in his career, but that's way past his prime

Thanks for the upload bruh. Been looking for some Dale Ellis videos on youtube for awhile now. Him and Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf has to be the best tough shot makers of all time. And they just both make it look so easy.

I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American. I USED to shoot TWO handed, until I was 19! How any of my shots went in, is a mystery. I also SHOULD have gotten glasses at 16. At 19, I started shooting ONE handed, Dale Ellis form, and my shots went in more. At 21, I got contacts, and shot Dale Ellis form, and my shooting GREATLY improved!

The '87 Sonics were a very interesting Cinderella team. Scuffled most of year, coached by Bernie Bickerstaff, not quite as talented as the 1989 version or George Karl's years. That said, the Lakers caught a big break that Dallas- who took them to 7 games a year later- got taken out early.
@TheMicka200811 жыл бұрын
People forget that Dale Ellis could run the break, had post up skills, and wasn't afraid to snake in with the tall timber for an offensive rebound put back. Of course, he was most known for coming off those screens and draining 25 footers. Lamar Mundane, indeed!

Ellis of the late 80s is really the best example of a per-game scorer that the Sonics ever had. From 1987-90 he averaged 24.9, 25.8, 27.5, and 23.5 respectively. Better numbers than Ray Allen, Payton, or Kemp ever put up.

When I first became a Sonics fan, it was these guys... Dale Ellis, Xavier McDaniel, Nate McMillan, Derrick McKey. The next season, they lost center Alton Lister and started their rotation-of-undersized-centers... Michael Cage was one, Olden Polynice, Earvin Johnson (the OTHER Earvin Johnson.) They even drafted then traded Scotty Pippen to Chicago to GET Olden Polynice. Luckily they drafted Kemp in 1989, and Payton in 1990.

I loved this Sonics team. When Ellis, X, and Chambers were all clicking, it was like a three-headed monster. lol After this series, they took down highly regarded Houston. But they ran out of gas in the Western Conference Finals against Magic's Lakers.

I don't know if this should really be "revenge" by Dale Ellis. He was playing behind Mark Aguirre and Rolando Blackman, who were both very good in their primes. Not guys a young player could steal minutes from.
