Shedtune - How to fit a temperature gauge

Fitting a temperature gauge to your scooter is a straight forward job, or it should be! In this video I show you how I fitted my new temperature gauge. I also show you what went wrong and how I fixed it. It will be the same on a Lambretta or a Vespa as this gauge fits the sensor under the spark plug.

Dont get caught up putting it under the spark plug. It’s easier under a cylinder head nut. That way it’s undisturbed checking the plug and less likely to need replacing when it gets broken 😅

@@Shedtune_Russ yeah put it on a cylinder head nut on the hot side away from the fan blowing harder on it. Pain under the sparkplug really. If it’s really accurate readings your after EGT is better.

Be careful with the 2 wires. They are Chromel/Alumel thermocouple wires in the cable and you must make sure you connect them correctly. I note your wires for the two different cable systems weren’t the same colour. The easiest way to check is the Alumel wire is magnetic. If you connect them the wrong way round you create an extra thermocouple junction and it introduces errors. So always Ch to Ch and Al to Al. The only junction between Ch and Al should be where they are attached on the sensor ring. I have a trail tech currently but I’ve bought the MB gauge which uses a 12v supply from the scooter for when my TT finally dies. Sorry for long winded explanation of Ch/Al thermocouple but I spent 40 years working instrumentation at Rolls- Royce aero engines.

Amazon do one which is a combined rev counter and cylinder head temp gauge for £25. I found easiest way to fit temp sensor ring was over the spark plug and held in place with some silicon tubing I found on E Bay and then spark plug cap.😁

Yeh we have tried a few types. We only needed a temp gauge and I prefer the sensor under the plug as it’s a bit more accurate and faster reacting but if it works for you then happy days. 😀👍🍺

Had the Trailtech on my Vespa & lasted 4 years, went to put on my Serveta and like you, battery failed. I too carefully cut in half to try and change battery but in the end I binned it (the robbing Ba$tards). have been looking at that type you have now, so will order one, even if it last 3 years, I can get 3 in the space of 9 years for same price as Trailtech one, happy days 👍👍

Had the same issue with those robbing Trailtech Americans. Modded an oven one (so I must be even tighter) to a KOSO 14mm sensor (5 in a pack), I couldn't find one online that went up to a high enough temperature without being connected to a battery. Does it work ok? Great vid I feel your pain.

Waitaminute, doesn't that SIP speedo already have a CHT gauge? It's tiny, can it even be read while riding?

Just a cheap iPhone cover off Amazon and it’s powered via a battery in the tool box to charge the phone as I ride from the DC out on the variatronic

It's annoying when something that seems easy ends up a waste of time 🤨 I had a go at brazing something a few days ago, and after an hour all I ended up with was two extremely hot bits of metal that fell apart when I tapped it....😆
