I was hiking up a valley many years ago and saw a sheep take a worse spill over a sheer cliff. As it plummeted and spiralled down, legs akimbo, I was sure it was game over. When I passed the bottom of the cliff ten minutes later there was no sign of the sheep. They are pretty lightweight and a fall isn't necessarily the end of the world for them. I think this guy made it.

KZbin algorithm has strangely brought us here after 15 years. Why on earth would this come up. The only connection I can think of was the fact I was watching a video earlier today about a cyclist climbing a mountain on his bike.

The Idwal Slabs falls are no joke, but besides that, the one going first died, it was on small scale news back then, the hikers checked on it, not sure about the lamb as they reported it to local authorities to see if it could be recovered, if someone bothered to rope down there it lived, if not was a goner.

@Outdoorshuntingshooting2 жыл бұрын
I was told by someone that goats are often grazed with sheep to prevent this exact scenario. the goats are much better on the more challenging rocks and eat the new growth before the sheep can. Thus preventing the sheep from accessing areas they are clearly not equipped to navigate.

@@kuuupe3641 i don't get it, it looks like there is a very small fall distance, and the sheep are not in lethal danger?
@bigalexg2 жыл бұрын
@@valinorean4816 Look closely, t the end of that fall distance we can see there appears to be a cliff. Hard to tell how far the fall is over the drop off but it looked rather fatal. The sheep went right off it.
@valinorean48162 жыл бұрын
@@bigalexg but if you look to the right, in the direction they were both coming from (at the beginning of the video), you'll see that there is a rather gentle curve/landscape which only goes down so much, you can easily gauge how deep it is because the "top" and "bottom" meet near where the sheep started!
@bigalexg2 жыл бұрын
@@valinorean4816 Yes. I think I see what you see. But I still think the drop off could more than it might appear. But I guess without further study or more info it's just hard to say for sure. I think it is very possible that gentle slope is a bit of an illusion or else deepened by the time it gets to the drop off point. That's how my eye sees it. Clearly the sheep tumbles off a drop, the only question is how far. Even if the drop is only 20 to 30 feet it could easily be a leg breaker or even fatal. Note too, the stream. It's more like a river. At 1:32 you can see some people crossing the river and they are miniscule. More I look at that the more I think the drop is huge.

I had a friend in college whose family were shepherds. He told me that every year they'd have at least one of their sheep die from stupidity. One choked to death in the top wire of the fence, apparently trying to get at the grass on the other side. There was a lower wire with plenty of space for a sheep to fit its head through, but this one decided to rear up on its hind legs and strangle itself to death. Another sheep somehow drowned itself in 1' of standing water after a heavy rain. The soil was soggy, but not nearly muddy enough for the animal to become entrapped. The real winner of the Darwin Olympics, however, went to a sheep that, for no reason, leapt up and smashed its skull in on a concrete walkway that covered the chute leading out to their pasture. Its body fell and blocked most of the chute which caused a pileup of sheep behind it. Other sheep tried to move past the dead one, but got stuck and started wildly flailing about while the other sheep continued to press forward. Before my friend could get to the sheep, it had fractured one its legs and broke a rib resulting in them having to put the poor animal down.

When the Bible was written with "The Good Shepherd" in mind, it was written while knowing how stupid sheep can be on a _daily basis._ I read that sheep often will like to lay down in little depressions in the ground; sounds OK so far, right? Wait until they topple belly up and cannot right themselves. They're not only sitting ducks for predators at this point, gasses will build up in them until they die.
