You are the only one I could find using a "natural wormer". Finally someone that realizes that the chemical companies have not always been here! Thank you!

I am so happy to see Ashley doing some of the hoof trimming because I know some people that just won't do it and they will have a vet come out and do it. I was also happy to see little buddy there helping and when he said mabey I can do that when I grow up I was so glad that he is learning and wants to learn and do like all the adults. Great video Dan your a great dad husband and teacher!

One time when we went on a vacation we came back and our sheep's hooves were nicely trimmed. We later found out the neighbor who was watching them had let them out on our paved driveway so much that there hooves had worn down hahahaha

good job on the worming and trimming! wish I could have seen the shearing! I helped my husband once, who used electric shears and nicked them quite a few times ugh

These are "hair sheep." They don't need to be sheared.

Jeanette Waverly actually some of his sheep are part Fresian and those are the ones he said he was going to give a trim to

Try liquidizing pumpkin seeds in with your dewormer. Garlic is a preventative but pumpkin seeds actually paralyse the worms so they can be expelled naturally. Sheep/goats need to have empty stomachs before they're drenched with the pumpkin seeds and then fed about 2 hours after. If you grow your own pumpkins, its a cheap wormer. That or just give them whole pumpkins chopped in half for breakfast. 😀

Another awesome video. We will definitely be trying out your natural dewormer recipe! FYI my wife was naturally MUCH better at the hoof trimming than I was. Dont feel like the lone ranger!

Thank you! Have you had to use a dewormer yet?
@LangFamilyFarmsLA7 жыл бұрын
Not yet....everything SEEMS to be A OK, but I think a natural dewormer like what yall use cant hurt anything, so its perfect for us to try! PS your animal for being up this late :)

I use one of the deck chairs to trim the hoofs of my sheep. I have a video of the process for those that are interested in another method. The deck chair makes it easier to see what you are doing and the sheep are very calm while they are in the beauty seat.

awesome! Can you send a link to the video?

I would like to pour some "rough" cement on their walking paths to help with the hooves because we are having to trim a lot of hooves (sheep included) pretty regularly. I'm just not sure they will walk on it. They may just move their path back to the grass.
@rosevalleyhomestead25697 жыл бұрын
Great job! Ashley killed it on those trimmings! We've just started to consider getting some sheep, but still have to look into what kind of market there is in the area for meat and/or wool.

I think trimming hoofs on an upright standing sheep is not ergonomic. It will kill your back if you have to do many. Just put them on their rear on one can handle this alone. The deworming is interesting. Might try it out....

Hey Dan, have you noticed if the hooves wear down much on their own in winter? I noticed with my cows that making them walk a little more through the snow to get at their feed and minerals really cleaned up the feet quite a bit, might be something worth experimenting with on your sheep.

docking tails is useful with wool sheep but mine are hair sheep so there is no benefit to docking

The head gate can be a great deal easier if you weld on a grain tray. Just a hand full of corn to get them to hold still while you get the right fit and you’re golden!..You should give a recipe on that dewormer mix. I have some customers that want only grass fed and all organic from breeding to slaughter which makes it tough to hit all the health issues. The one thing I will never give up is the Fluke worm treatment. That is just too horrible a death for any animal to face so if I lose a customer over that one concession I’m willing to do that. But I like to work with customers and if there is aa good solution for general use in worming for lambs that will only live 8 months that would be really great. By the way if you anchor a heavy strap front and rear (at the legs) to the platform you can run it up over the animal and use super heavy Velcro to strap the hoof. The animal cannot ‘win’ and you can hold it steady while you trim.
