Sheep Shearing & Grass-Fed Beef! Montana Ranch!!! Women in Ag 2022
In today's video, I have the privilege of learning how Lisa Schmidt moved from Oregon and started A Land of Grass Ranch in north-central Montana. Lisa is amazing. She runs this entire heritage ranch by herself and this is more than just a few acres. She had a dream and she believes in family farming and making a difference by selling direct to consumers. It is amazing how Lisa can maintain the highest quality Black Angus cattle, Targhee, and Hampshire sheep. Lisa has also written a book about how to ranch and adventures in raising your food. She believes that meat should come from naturally raised animals on native pasture and native grass because it is leaner and better tasting. Grass-fed beef is delicious! I encourage everyone to go to Lisa's website www.a-land-of-grass-ranch.com and learn about what it takes to be a rancher and how your beef and lamb get to your table. Please help support Lisa and buy one of the many products from her ranch from wool yarn, wool dryer balls, socks, and books, to grass-fed beef and lamb. A big thank you to Montana Farmers Union for making this interview possible!!! Thank you for watching!!!

My Story…
Hello. My name is Kate Stephens, and I am a 17-year-old 4th-generation Montana farmer. My family has been farming wheat in north-central Montana since my great grandfather immigrated from Denmark in 1912 and homesteaded our land. My family has been teaching me about farming since I was two years old. I run one of the combines on the farm at harvest. I believe that it is important for everyone to know where their food comes from and the families who produce it. I love our farm, and I hope that my Farm to Fashion and Farm to Table products can help educate people about where their food comes from in a fun way. That is how Kate's Ag - Farm to Fashion became a reality. I hope you love my products as much as I do because this is an extension of our farm and the grains we have been growing to feed other families for over one hundred years. beef cattle

What a fantastic episode Kate. God bless our farmers and ranchers without y’all we all would be in a bad way. I was an FFA member all four years in High School and part of what we did was shear sheep as well as a lot of other things. I appreciate your friend and the way she explained the processes.

This interview really hit home for me. My late uncle Ben had a blanket manufacturing and cleaning business. He specialized in wool blanket manufacturing and cleaning. I went to work for him when I was 12 and learned all the processes to make the wool blanket from the sheep wool to sewing on the ribbon. Then the cleaning process which was special in that there would be no shrinking or matting. When the synthetic blankets hit the market the business slowly died. The wool blanket was expensive to make and sheep herders were sparse. It was a sad ending but my Uncle never stopped trying to bring back the wool blanket. So this interview brought back some good memories of my past and could relate to a lot of what your interviewee was saying. That you for all that you do.

Great video!! I can not echo Ms Schmidt's sentiments enough. It is imperative that we (Americans) start/continue to support local farmers and buying American made. If someone does not know where to start, just Google it. There r so many positive benefits such as: supporting the local economy, building personal/business relationships, knowing what went into the food ur eating, more nutritious food products & higher quality of the non-food products, and the value for the dollar far exceeds that of what u purchase in the chain grocery or retail store. Keep up this style of videos!! U r a great ambassador for the farm community!

G,day Kate and Rancher Lisa from Sydney Australia. Thanks for a great visit to a running sheep and cattle station (ranch). The portable five (5) stand sheering trailer is unique with no wool classing table to asses and dock the fleece. Lisa made mention of fencing: with electric strand and solar systems for cattle (cows). Sheep on the other hand, need stronger and more strained wires- with races and small holding pens for inspection, tails and vaccinations. Nice story Kate, quiet the network: the Montana Farmers Union- plenty of "roosters in the hen house"? Praying for rain. 🌏🇦🇺

Congratulations Kate, this is one of your best videos! The equipment videos are fun and interesting, but this video really provides a good, thorough look at what sorts of challenges farmers face in trying to earn a living. Most folks think farmers are rich because they own a lot of land and food prices are high right now, they do not know how heavily mortgaged all that land and equipment is. Lisa hit the nail on the head; the middlemen in the process of bringing agricultural products to the consumer are making most of the profit! The farmer and the supermarket make almost nothing because they are at the ends of the process. Best wishes, and keep up the good work!
@KatesAg
@KatesAg 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your fantastic comment and amazing kindness!!! I'm not sure farmers can make it if they have mortgages on their land. It really doesn't pencil out because of the low prices they get for crops/animals. If they have mortgages on equipment it is even worse. Direct to consumer truly is fantastic and the best way to go and it is hard for farmers to do that because like Lisa said if they have operating loans they have to pay them back in the fall. I think if farmers can negotiate those loans then they could break free from the cycle of selling to corporate middlemen. Our farm is unique because it's been in our family for over a century and we are super frugal because we know that there are going to be bad years. We don't care about fancy equipment and vehicles, we care about being as efficient as possible.

Congratulations Kate, this down to earth video is not only educational, well done, it is also very inspirational, it's so good to see more women at the end of the plow and at the helm. It wasn't many decades ago that women rose up for women's rights (1920 something). Prior to that, they were, like slaves and not on the front lines. I've worked on several projects, where the women outworked the men, the men complained like babies, the women, they just got the job done, no complaints. WTG Kate, go girl!!! Keep up the dream and hard work. And thank you for providing a 60 year old man knowledge he did not have prior on how my food is grown, I appreciate my food so much more, recently bought wheat berries, made my own whole wheat flour and bread, I love it, and everyone I shared it with loves it, my doctor especially loves it! Who ever said that, you can't teach an old dog, new tricks?! They were wrong, and anyone that says a young person cannot disseminate knowledge, and educate, those persons, are also wrong. One thing I have learned in six decades is, enthusiasm, is, everything! Keep your enthusiasm and spirit strong, you will encounter storms, stick to your dreams and work hard, you'll overcome the storm! As you most likely already know, living in the vast plains!

Lady Kate. This video of “Sheep Shearing & Grass Fed Beef! Montana Ranch!!! Women in Ag 2022” (for me) has sent you over the top when it comes to you doing a multiple of skills!! You bring the many other aspects of farming in many other fields, and I say, Bravo! Bravo! I thought that when I chose to watch your channel, that I would probably occasionally check it out, but had me wondering back (subscribed) to what great surprises I am going to see next. As to women owning, managing, and working the farm, and this has been swept under the rug throughout history. Single women and married women (husbands who died of natural causes, war or went off to Sea and never returned) as far back as history can go have had to do this. Although don’t let it distract you from your own farm! Stay Safe and Keep Up The Great Work!

That sheepdog totally owned the truck in the video. New Zealand is a country with many sheep but is much greener than Montana. And no predators such as Coyotes. Do you have Farmers Markets in your area where local producers can sell to local customers? The story of shipping the wool around for washing, spinning etc is just crazy. With the rising transport costs something needs to change. Kates Ag Farm to Fashion Wool Processing Corp in Great Falls needs to get started. You go girl!!!

Up at 4:30 to make breakfast for all 8-12 of us hands and for the noon meal load the big table in the back of an old school bus with seats down the side, go back to the house and prepare supper, and next day do it all again. 24 - 7, all summer with no break. He is of no further use, and as all you know are working all day every day you may have missed him saying on camera that he does not read the laws and executive orders the kiddies give him to sign. Sigh.

Thanks Miss Kate for another perspective on farming/ranching. I was quite interested when she mentioned selling direct. Brought to mind Gabe Brown and his operation; you really should check his operation out. He makes money from every aspect of his operation plus he makes more per acre by doing less. Thanks.

Val and Amy Caster track the Andover tornado or something like that. For what it.s worth the Little Sioux Scout Ranch tornado killed some boy scouts and left us without power for 25 hours, Relatives and friends worried about us, and we had no idea. I like Lisa's goals and she seems like a good person. I am going to show Catherine your latest video. She will have comments. Thanks for remembering our service.

I totally understand the predicament rearing cattle n sheep on the farm...my family is one...we produce our own feed, we feedlot our animals so we will not be affected by the elements, do our own selective breeding, etc. N u r right, you have to love to run a farm...it is a 24 hour passion💜💜💜💜💜💜

Visited a sheep farm in New Zealand back in the 80's. It was essentially one guy doing all the shearing day after day. The guy was one fit dude! The sheep would just placidly lie still as he sheared their wool with a set of power shears. The sheep seemed happy to be relieved of their huge loads of wool.

Well you better get a grip!! Because they are saying this year will be a bad droit, due to that we did not get the proper snow and rain fall. At the present time, the water table is very low from the previous year and have not yet recovered. This year will be tough go for both the farmers and ranchers, pray for rain. People tend to forget that when the farmers are taking a hit, the ranchers are taking a similar hit that is just as bad. Great Job Kate to broaden your horizons including Ranching.

I worked in the shearing industry when I was younger , because we didn't have any trees on our orchard there was not a lot to do so I got a job as a "Presser "it was my job to make those wool bales , the correct term is a wool press , not " packer "and her " bag " she uses for the wool is called a fadge , we didn't have hydraulic wool presses back then , it was all tramped by your legs and then pressed by hand . seeing livestock in your video's is good.
