“There are no two puppies alike.” That brought tears to my eyes. It’s wonderful to find a video showing someone who has true mastery of their skill. Seeing an old master is a delight to the soul.

Really pleased to come across these videos. Ted was my Great Uncle but I only met him twice in the 1960s when he was at a sheep dog trial at Stanmer Park , Brighton and once at his home in Kent. It is very rewarding in exploring family history to have this video image of a relative born in 1911.

This takes me back to my time as a young man. Worked a lot with two old Dog Men. Late 70s early 80s. Real Dog men with patience and knowledge. Knew more than any of the people you’ll see today on Social media. Real true deep knowledge and understanding of how dogs tick, and how you gradually, patiently mould that into what’s needed. The best Dog men I found were always quiet.

I love this mans patience and understanding - a master of his charge and in a kind way. A great example to any dog lover.

We have a very small 5 acre farm and used Ted's methods on two Border Collies. Both dogs learned fast, really fast, and when people watch us work the dogs they think we are professionals when actually it was our first time. No clickers and only whistle for lay down. RIP Ted your legacy lives on with You Tube. Many thanks to gazellefilms Maurice R Porter

Beautiful video. Not only is it set in the mystical realm of Kent, with a stone farm cottage and peaceful sheep in the fields, the master-dog relationship is amazing. I liked the down training using the foot on the lead method. It does not look cruel here, and the dogs respond as well as any professionally trained dogs. The positive training only people could learn from this. he seems a very nice, humble man, and you can always believe the dog.

Love this....see.......a no nonsense approach to getting dogs obedience and respect...these days these bleeding hearts who think dogs are human babies and put clothes on them ...I have nothing but respect for these videos.....with love from Canada

To receive comments like this is truly uplifting, and really makes me glad that I managed to get this programme made towards the end of his (Ted's) life. I only hope that a certain editor of a certain magazine reads this, and now eats his own words of disparaging and reproachful criticism he made when I first put this out on video back in the 1990's. His agenda of trying to bury it for his own ends failed, proving what he and his cohorts were really all about. Time and the wwweb told on him.

Thanks for making the film, back in the Day. Ted could have easily been from the same mould as Tom Robinson, and Ernest Todd. The two old Dog men I learnt so much from in the late 1970s. Tom Robinson came through from Kennel Boy to Head Gamekeeper for The Earl of Halifax. Long Retired when I helped him and made his Living Running a Training Kennels in old Pig Sheds outside Pocklington. These Dog men died with their boots on, never really understood concept of retirement. Why would They when they lived the dogs and what they did so much. Ernest or Toddy as everyone knew him was a crafty quiet old man, that had his own strain of Labrador with a stout sturdy build. They were literally the epitome of the saying Labradors were born half trained. He seemed to get them right by walking the old railway line shooting a few pigeons. Of course that’s the skill of a really good Dog man they always make it look easy.

Gosh can't you see how old this is, just by the way he trains a lay down. Now a days you teach by putting a treat in your hand on the floor and getting them down this way. He reminds me very much of the Barbra Woodhouse method. Great video thanks for posting.

Hi Ted - I rescue ill treated Border Collies & one of my dogs was so beaten & kicked that he was a nervous wreck it took me almost 2 years before he would come anywhere near me - I am used to Border Collies - love the breed so when poor old Kip collapsed & died in my garden aged 13 years old took me totally by surprise so I have now rescued another Border Collie that has been kicked in the mouth & also had a tail cut off so I am going to give her a great life - I have over an acre of land & at the bottom of my garden are woods - my oldest Border was Georgie almost 17 years old !!!!
