Sheet Metal Loading at 6L Designs "Metal in Motion"

I'm a one man show, and to not break my already weary back by loading sheet metal single handedly, I designed and built a sheet metal storage rack with a jib crane to make things easier!
- The storable sheet size is up to 4' x 8' on eight removable shelves.
- The jib crane is rated up to 1,100 pounds, and the magnets are rated up to 660 pounds each.
Work smarter, not harder, was the guiding principle!

Very nice indeed. Putting this on a list to make. Maybe I'll think about how to fabricate a fully extendable sliders, like the ones for furniture drawers, but rated for 1000lbs+:)

The only thing easier would be an anti-gravity black box you set on the sheet and float it over to the table.... nice setup. Where/ how can we see the CAD drawings and pictures?

I built this myself prior to getting my plasma table! I looked at different sheet metal racks online and their cost, and decided to build one that would work best for me. It has worked really well for me and is worth every penny I've spent! It has saved my back many times over!

How thin of material can you use with the magnet setup? Have you used any 14 guage?

I've done it with 16ga, and it works! It's a little wavy, but it still worked for me! If you lift it off the stack or pallet, you have to get some none magnetic spacers below the magnets like 2x4's, before you engage the magnets!

Hi Wolfgang. Thanks for sharing this. What Lifting magnet rating do you recommend? And where did you get yours? And have you ever had issue with thinner gage sheet peeling back from the lifting magnets?

I used them on some 16ga sheet stock without issues! There are many options available through amazon.com! Mine are rated at 660 lbs. per magnet, which allows me to lift a 1/2" sheet of steel without any problems!

Do the racks slide out at all. Or can you take out with a forklift. Great setup. I need to do the same. What material did you use.

These are removable steel pallets that I can easily move in and out of the rack with my forklift, Craig! The material is all square and rectangular steel tubing, 3/16" wall!
