They had to imply just a hint of inferiority complex in Dipankar whenever he saw Shailaja and Pradip together. Also, the audience had to constantly feel like by the time the movie ends, something will happen between Shailaja and Pradip (Gods knows what, but something at least) because Pradip is obviously better than Dipankar on a superficial level. This would not come off well if they had cast Kumud Mishra. This is why I think the casting was perfect. You should check out Swanand Kirkire in Chumbak. He is a surprisingly good actor despite primarily being a lyricist. Three of Us reminded me of Past Lives which also released in the same year and evoked similar feelings.

I too was not super-impressed by Swanand in this role, not because he was bad but because Shefali and Jaideep were out of this world. The first person that came to mind who could have played that character was Rajat Kapoor. Sanjay Mishra would also have killed it, but he's played that kind of character several times.
