Sheffield Castle, England 1270 -1647

The origins and final destruction of one of the largest castles built in medieval England, Sheffield Castle. Constructed by Thomas de Furnival and later owned by the Earls of Shrewsbury, Sheffield Castle was for 14 years the gaol for Mary, Queen of Scots. It was destroyed by resolution of the House of Commons in 1647.

Thank you for showing this video; I was born in Sheffield and loved English History at school but this was back in the late 1950's when students were eager to learn and would try to excel at the subjects they were interested in.

Sheffield Council plans to open up the remains of the castle sited within a decorative garden..that will be quite nice I think.

One thing that does not have universal acceptance is that the castle is on a Saxon fortress. There was signs of a wooden structure found but there is also strong evidence that the first castle was a timber construction as many early Norman castles were. There is another site which is suggested for Waltheof's Hall. Possibly a dig will find the truth when the market comes down.

No, she visited there for a break as it was a deer park and quite rural,she spent 99% of her time holed up in Sheffield Castle.

Bob Cord It was a deer park yes but its only half a mile or so up the nearest hill from the castle. Wolsey stayed there so it must have been fairly comfortable.

She only spent a short amount of time there, when they needed to give the castle a deep clean due to sanitation. The reason she spent the vast majority of her imprisonment at the castle is obvious: it was more secure.

I do not believe a castle existed in Haymarket as it wouldn't make strategic sense to build a castle on one of the city's lowest places, Manor castle makes more sense being built on much higher ground!
