"Marlin Spike" is primarily used as a shackle pin. D ring connectors were secured by a pin which was finger tightened. Salt water spray only needed a few minutes to tighten these so that you couldn't unfasten them by hand. They have a hole at one end, so you put the point of the shackle pin into the hole and crack the salt that has crusted at the end of the thread. It is tapered so it will fit all sizes of D ring connector.

We used to say ,the marlin spike was used to get boy scouts out of horses hoofs! Still got my original army issue ,made in 1954.Has the pin prick pointed marlin spike. This is why I don't use it for an EDC. Sure it makes it illegal .

As a kid when I got my first British Army style clasp knife my Grandfather also said the spike was for removing stones from horse shoes. Afew years later, in the Sea Scouts that was our standard knife, and I was told the spike was for opening knots. I think I only ever used it for putting holes in leather pouches for my catapults.

That’s interesting mate, guess a lot more horses were used back then so makes sense, I’ve used it a couple times for undoing knots when I’m out on my boat it works well especially if your hands are cold.

As a young sea cadet I was taught to use the marlin spike to open up the strands of a rope to create various splices, monkeys fists, etc.

@@sak94 I’m sure you know this already but the marlin is a fish with a long spike on its snout,

I've had mine for about 5 years now. I am very fond of it. From J. Adams of Sheffield. But just like yours. Reliable, simple, easy to open-though the tin opener took a bit of working in. I prefer it to many of my American multitools. Wish I'd bought two or three when they were around £24. Thanks for the look. Enjoy.

I`ve got a 1954 dated one. I think the navy had stainless steel ones without the Bakelite scale, then they were standardised at some time . Really useful pocket knife.

Bloody hell there is world of difference between that and the peice of crap I've got! Yours really does look solid, and well fitted. I reckon mine has to be a knock off. Want a proper one now!

This is the one I gave to Mike, it was pretty solid not quite as good as the original ones but still decent, I think I remember reading when I got this one that there were a few fake ones about Jim so could be possible mate which takes the piss!
