We start our explore at the Victoria Quays canal basin in Sheffield City Centre. Here we find a number of old buildings that are now Grade 2 listed.
The Terminal Warehouse dates back to the opening of the canal in 1819. The grain warehouse was added on in 1860 and The Straddle was added in 1895 to allow boats to be moored underneath and unloaded. At the side of the basin is the quaint little street called Merchants Crescent. This row of terraced houses was the offices of the Coal Merchants.
Alongside the canal basin is our first railway history of our explore. The arches that now host pubs and cafes were once supporting the Park Station Goods Station. We see evidence of the former bridge supports that spanned the canal basin linking the station to the Great Central Line.
As we leave Victoria Quays, we pass under the Sheffield Ring Road (A61 Derek Dooley Way) and the former Great Central Railway arches.
After a few minutes we arrive at our first grade 2 listed bridge. The original Cadman Bridge from 1819. Next to this is the also listed Sepilia Works.
After passing under the Midland Railway, we continue out of Sheffield Centre through former and present industry before we meet our next listed bridge - the original 1819 Bacon Lane Bridge.
It is here we see the site of the opening scene from the film The Full Monty.
We then enter the suburb of Attercliffe and a number of bridges pass over the canal including the Supertram (which we will now follow all the way to Tinsley).
We see our next disused station remains - Attercliffe. Quickly followed by the Worksop Road Aquaduct.
The canal then takes a more rural feel as we enter towards the Tinsley Flight lock system - 11 locks that see the canal ultimately drop to the level of the River Don.
Before, we see a few more interesting pieces of railway history. The former Broughton Lane station and an old lift bridge across the canal that carried a line in to the former Tinsley Park Colliery.
We pass the site of the Lock 5, which was destroyed by a bomb in World War 2.
Before reaching the former Tinsley Railway Station, we stumble upon an old railway goods shed that is fully accessible from the towpath. Well worth a look inside.
We eventually pass under the Tinsley Viaduct carrying the M1 motorway before we reach the River Don and the end of our explore.
The Sheffield and Tinsley Canal opened in 1819. A 4 mile stretch of waterway from Sheffield to the River Don near Rotherham. The canal passes through 11 locks and joins up with the River Don Navigation canal towards Doncaster and onwards to the River Trent. 1895, the Sheffield& Tinsley and River Don Navigation were merged to form the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation.

My channel was set up in 2020 mainly to feature my running adventures. I planned to film and showcase the days out and destinations my running travels took me. Mainly the Peak District and the sights and marvels of Sheffield and the surrounding regions.
However due to Covid restrictions, I found a new interest in researching and exploring old abandoned places - railway lines, canal, woodland, parks to name a few.
So the videos you'll find will be mainly be of those things. Of course, where possible I'll be running to my destination.
