Sheffield United: Premier League - 2006-07

After a 12 year absence from the top flight, Sheffield United were once again back amongst the elite of English Football. A home draw against Liverpool on the first day of the season and wins over Arsenal, Middlesbrough and Newcastle United saw Sheffield United keep ahead of the relegation zone for much of the season. However, West Ham United's late run of good form, combined with a broken leg suffered by top scorer Rob Hulse against Chelsea that left the Blades lacking firepower up front, saw Sheffield United sucked into the relegation battle and they were relegated on the final day of the season on goal difference. Manager Neil Warnock resigned just days after their relegation was confirmed, ending a seven-year spell at the club he grew up supporting.
NOTE: I had to cut out Kevin Doyle's 16 second goal because the Premier League originally copyrighted the video and blocked it in all countries. Apologies.

I’ll never forget that last match. David Unsworth’s legendary penalty that relegated Sheff Utd for 12 years and kept Wigan up for 6 years.

I knew on that last day we were going down, I knew West Ham would win at OT and We’d bottle it. Last game if the season I had flu and couldn’t go, only second game I missed all season, I felt so sick afterwards I couldn’t eat my Sunday dinner

Even now I expect to see Webber's little chip nestle in the bottom corner. So unfair on Warnock and the squad. Everything that could have gone wrong DID go wrong, some of it illegally too, and it all conspired to relegate us. We've never recovered either. Hopefully Wilder the Blade is going to succeed like Warnock the Blade did and get the Blades juggernaut heading back in the right direction. UTB!

Where's the Unsworth Penalty to send em down and the full game's goals against Villa? Typical Blades just gloss over the fact they had it in their hands only needing 1 point from 2 games and fucked it up, try and present it like they were 'unlucky' and heroic in defeat. Bet the same happens this season and they'll not learn their lesson again.

Glad to see the blades back tho I believe still to this day that the FA AND THE PREMIER LEAGUE cheated them, West Ham broke rules and got away with a fine and no point deduction which had the deduction gone ahead the blades would have been safe. Huge respect from an Evertonian.

I'm not quite keen on that relegation math. Do they do it H2H results or just the goal difference? Because if it was only goal difference Wigan would just need to win without caring about the West Ham result. Hope you clear things up on that. Otherwise this was a great roundup for a great season. Just looking at some of the results Sheffield got they really didn't deserve to be relegated.
