Most clubs give free access to cup games to season ticket holders, so freezing weather played a part and the unattractiveness of the fixture to both sides the other reason. I certainly wouldn’t have gone on such a freezing night City deserved the win and Wilders admission that our fringe players were better than theirs sums it all up, well done lads

Why even bother playing the early rounds? Managers and clubs are not bothered and neither are the fans anymore. The Premier League and the big money clubs have snubbed the FA Cup for years. The money clubs usually play reserve teams but still get through the early rounds. Then, if they make the quarter final and have f*** all (FA) chance of winning anything else, they start to take it seriously and try to win it as a consolation prize. Like Manchester United did in 2024. The same club that started the rot when they withdrew from the competition 25 years ago. They have also sacked managers after they have won the FA Cup, which says it all. Next season, the FA may as well just scrap the early rounds and have the top 8 Premier League clubs play the quarter finals.

Can I ask why? On the last two occasions that Sheffield United were in the Premier League, they were cast adrift in 20th place well before Christmas and couldn't compete. Just like Southampton this season. Sheffield United are doing well this season, but mainly with defensive football in a weak Championship. So, unless there is a huge cash injection, is there really any point in being promoted?
