This is my favourite version of this song. That voice has been touched by God.

I have always enjoyed the Sandy Denny performance of this song, but now I have a new favorite singer for this classic song. Sheila Chandra does a wonderful performance of this, with soul. Beautiful recording.

Steadman Uhlich - I'm pleased this has the drone to represent the deep rolling ocean. Great vocals. Well done. 10/10 from me. 🌟

A very interesting version. But Fairport's is the ultimate. Sandy's voice is perfection and the instrumental which follows must be one of the finest in all of rock or folk.

Sandy Danny learned this from Martin Cathy, according to Richard Thompson in an interview I heard recently. This version was learned from Sandy Danny. Martin Carthy sang "A sailor's life is a weary life", which makes a lot more sense than "a merry life", in the context of the song.

They had not sailed long on the deep When a queen's ship they chanced to meet. ``you sailors all, pray tell me true, Does my sweet william sail among your crew? ``oh no, fair maiden, he is not here For he's been drownded we greatly fear On yon green island as we passed it by, There we lost sight of your sailor boy. Well, she wrung her hands and she tore her hair. She was like a young girl in great despair. And her little boat against a rock did run. ''how can I live now my sweet william is gone?

A sailor's life, it is a merry life. He robs young girls of their hearts' delight, Leaving them behind to weep and mourn, They never know when they will return. Well, there's four and twenty all in a row My true love he makes the finest show. He's proper tall, genteel and all, And if I don't have him, I'll have none at all. Oh father, build for me a bonny boat, That on the wide ocean I may float And every queen's ship that we pass by, There I'll enquire for my sailor boy

This is beautiful and haunting, also try the "traditional folk" Sandy Denny story version and in reply to cragsterama comment about the instrumental that follows Sandy being overlong, that's like saying the Mona Lisa is a bit small. What a bonus it's a monster and I agree with nottamun "one of the finest in all of rock or folk." Building up from a slow start slowly gathering speed and involvement coming to a frenzied climax and then subsiding it ebbs and fades away. It has to be that long to build up and then release all that energy. Listen listen.

not really appropriate to discuss who has the best voice, but i think this version is a little too hurried, compared to Sandy denny

It doesn't bear comparison with Sandy Denny's rendition. It is flat and almost spoken word. Emotionless.

Disagree. This one is much more melodic than Sandy's.
