Other things can and should be added too. Groups of empty plastic milk bottles that rattle, and tarps that don't only rattle, but move around a lot. They should be walked all over the place in the country, on a lead rope or loosely tied to another horse, to get them thoroughly used to noise, movement, weight, and passing vehicles. Vehicles are a notorious problem. Even the courteous ones are scary to hoses, but many are downright evil, gunning their motors and honking their horns right beside you, which terrifies horses! So desensitization is very important.
@blackdandelion5549
@blackdandelion5549 Жыл бұрын
@@cattymajiv Many people call this Desensitizing, but myself and a few others do not. The technical scientific term is Habituating, but my friends and I call it "Building Distress Tolerance". Habituating means the animal will become used to the object(s) and accept them as part of their habitat or as a normal everyday thing they may encounter. Myself and friends like to use everything under the sun from a training stick with plastic bags and rubbing them all over the horse, tarps, milk jugs, we have people ride their bikes circling around the horse, same with quads, tractors, dumptrucks, roping (even if you won't be roping from the horse), hula hoop (they normally rattle and have beads and/or sparkle), saddle off center, etc. and the reason we call this building distress tolerance is the horse eventually builds trust with the rider/handler/owner and when new things the horse has never been exposed to come into play the horse doesn't have a major flight/fight reaction as it has been through so many and gained trust with their partner that they kind of look to their partner like "should I be afraid?" and if the rider is not scared or upset the horse is like "meh, it's like those 100 other things I've seen/dealt with". I don't like desensitizing because the horse should still care and be aware of their environment. A car for example is OK to walk next to or stay calm and not flight/fight, BUT if the car is going to hit us I would prefer if the horse was still sensitive enough and aware enough to have a flight/fight response. I have had some horses come in for retraining/touch ups and they were so desensitized I put them on a path and said "go" and they walked head first right into a tree because they were not supposed to have a reaction to anything. Next time they went around they tree and were rewarded for actually thinking and being my partner and their moods improved substantially. Someone had used "flooding" on them to the point they showed signs of learned helplessness and encouraging them to think for themselves again is much harder than creating learned helplessness. It's why I don't like Desensitizing and prefer Building Distress Tolerance and Habituating. Distress will happen to horses, just like I don't enjoy flu shots my horse likely doesn't either and I need to educate them on when to tolerate things and when they should not tolerate distress and their safety is at risk. They actually pay attention to their surroundings and make amazing partners.

@blackdandelion5549
@blackdandelion5549 Жыл бұрын
I can't speak for Cory, but I will say for many of us who start or put a refresher on a horse we don't tie them up like a more seasoned horse for several reasons. First, is this is a prey animal so being tied or restrained is how people and horses get seriously injured. If the horse were tied and the saddle was placed on her back and she was to buck, move out from that saddle, etc. then she can't bc she is tied and now I have a scared horse who might be kicking while there may be a saddle on the ground getting destroyed in the process. Second is the process is about trust and gauging where the horse is at so if she wouldn't have let that saddle get near her that tells you the horse needs to be exposed to it and have just the pads draped over her back more. In the center of the round pen the horse can escape and move off instead of hurting the person. There is no forcing a horse to do things so the fact that they can leave if they feel the absolute need helps build the trust level with a fearful horse. You just go gather them up and take a step back in your training, but normally trainers notice the horse's body language and feel them tense before they would run away and our goal is not to push them to a point where they feel the need to run from us or our equipment. In general I tell people "If I can't do it w/o a halter and lead then I can't do it" because the halter and lead are simply a communication tool and no human can actually hold a horse in place to make them do something. This is all voluntary on the part of the horse and we respect them for that by not pushing them too hard and too fast. Eventually when there is very little chance of this horse having any poor reaction to a saddle and it's old news AND the horse can tie then we can combine the two teachings together. Both are scary to a prey animal.

A horse just stand and not move when you're settling no matter what whether it's tied or not and I believe the reason he doesn't have her type is because she is nervous and she would probably pull back and jerk herself to death and this way she has room to pull away if necessary so she doesn't frighten herself

I don't think any long-term harm was done to this horse necessarily, but I don't agree with this training method. If you know a horse is going to buck, the horse isn't ready for the saddle yet. IMO not enough prep work was done to ensure that the horse wasn't THIS frightened by the experience. She didn't seem to accept it, she just got tired. Not my preferred method of training, but I'm sure it'll work out alright in the end.
@blackdandelion5549
@blackdandelion5549 Жыл бұрын
I agree that when I have gone through everything thoroughly I have never had a horse buck when putting on a saddle for the first time or the 15th time. I don't know what prep work was done for this, but I would have had it in the ring, let her sniff it out, rubbed the saddle on her, put it back on a stand, sat it on her back, taken it off, so on and so forth. I don't like my horses to ever "buck it out" as it means I went too fast. This is my way of training and my opinion however. My way takes hours and days after a lot of groundwork. I just like my horses calm and not fearful. Cory may have restrictions on his time, the number of horses may be greater, and I have no idea what prep work went in and I wasn't at the auction to see her be ridden so I can't take those other things into account however. I also don't know if the horse ever had a back cinch before as some horses don't do super well with them and it takes me some time to get them prepared for it to be tight.

@CDN_Bookmouse
@CDN_Bookmouse Жыл бұрын
@@blackdandelion5549 I agree, I don't think a properly-prepared horse will feel the need to buck--or certainly not like that. She looked just about as stressed afterward as she was before, and I don't agree with the decision to drive her around, even gently. She might have been ok if she were allowed to stand quietly and go at her own pace. It's like he wanted her to buck to "get it out" and I just don't think that's how it needs to be. I don't think she's traumatized by this or anything, but I don't think it was a positive experience for her. If a horse has the expression she has when he puts that saddle on, I think you should just stop and wait. I know they're very busy, but I don't think it was an issue of time, it was an issue of philosophy. There's just no need to force a horse to go through this, IMO. She wasn't ready and he pushed her anyway, and I just don't agree with doing things that way. Poor girl was so upset and it wasn't necessary.
@CDN_Bookmouse
@CDN_Bookmouse Жыл бұрын
@@lonie3100 Yeah, I'm pretty disappointed too. I know this man is more experienced than I am, but I much prefer watching someone like Ryan Rose, or my own barn trainers, who actually CARE what the horse is saying to them. I know he cares about the horses, but this horse was screaming that she was not ready and he chose to drive her anyway. It's a difference of philosophy and I just plain don't agree with it. I wouldn't go so far as to call it cruel, but I would call it ineffective, uncompassionate, and unnecessary. The saddle is enormous on her which will be uncomfortable, and she just needed a damn minute. But he had to push her anyway--I think he intended to make her buck and "get it out." I just don't agree it's the best mindset with which to approach these animals. Go watch some Ryan Rose videos, they'll make you feel better.

There is a technical term for it. Flooding a process in which the horse is completely and utterly exposed to a stimulus that causes him fear. A horse isn't trained to be comfortable with something, but they have no escape so they "give in" or "give up" since it won't go away. We know that through multiple times of exposing a horse to something they find fear in, and letting the horse have a healthy normal reaction without fear, pain or punishment, each time the stimulus is brought out again the horse's level of arousal will go down and down and down until they are what's known as "habituated" with the stimulus, like a saddle.

Start out by making friends with her in liberty training with her and leading her through obstacles. She needs confidence not feeling like she is prey, and you are the predator! She is not broke to ride she barely lunges correctly. You seriously need a proper trainer, not someone who has had horses all his life and learned to train horses from you tube.
