In the past we have given away 100's of dresses to amazing organizations, but this is a new way to raise funds through selling dresses that have been featured in videos! All the money raised from selling these dresses will go directly to Maui fire relief funds ❤go to miamaplesmarket.com, the bidding will be open for 48 hours! (also this will not be the ONLY auction we host, we will host many more for different causes/charities.. this is just the first one

Hi! I’m a crocheter and I think that the reason that most dupes of the knitted/crochet projects are different can be that if the piece is crocheted, then fast fashion companies can’t copy it as easily, since for knitting, you can automate knitting with knitting machines, but you can’t automate crochet things, meaning that all crochet pieces have to be hand-made, and therefore are more expensive to produce. Love the content! :)

As someone who used to make and sell handmade items, I totally get both sides -from a consumer point of view - though. Not everyone has the means to buy handmade items, and that's the main issue. These types of stores simply jump in on that. Let's be real, handmade items are of better quality, more sustainable, but are also more expensive because of the materials, time and attention (love) put into them. I get it if someone sees the swimsuit they love, but can't afford $239 for it and sees a knock-off for $13 and goes for it. Those who can will still buy the handmade version and will be happy with it, those who can't afford that are happy with a cheaper version of it even if it is of low(er) quality. Either way, both customers are happy.

I agree with the consumer end of what you’re saying but I wish companies like Temu would list who the original creator was or give them some compensation. I think it’s frustrating that even though pieces from these stores may be cheap, they surely they have much higher profit margins compared to the creator and for a tiny fraction of the effort and quality. Also many people who can easily afford the original prices will either not know it exists or will choose it simply because it’s cheap
@sue9861
@sue9861 9 ай бұрын
@@louise3953 in an ideal world that would be the right thing to do. However, the creator could patent their design, to protect their design. Again, that comes down to money, which small/starting businesses don't have. You can't win that battle, not against big names like Temu/Ali/Wish etc. It also comes down to what is 'unique'? Is anything really unique? Not a lot of things truly are as most things are inspired by other so called 'unique' items. Which applies to basically everything: music, clothing, art etc. As the saying goes "Good artists copy. Great artists steal."

@@callmewaves1160 as someone who used to be a 40S before my reduction 2 years ago I completely understand this. But there's a UK based company that sells bras for bigger sizes and can run cheaper. It's called Curvy Kate or their other company Brastop. I've gotten K size bras for $40 on there. Obviously still not cheap but cheaper than what you're paying for now (yes it was US converted pricing). The bras are made really well as well. They also sell bathing suits too. @@lumo9455 knitting is done with two needles and are interlocking loops and crocheting is done with one hook and is basically creating knots. Knit items tend to be more lightweight and stretchy and crochet items tend to be bulkier and tighter but then that also depends on the yarn you are using too. With crocheting your creating one stitch at a time and with knitting all of your stitches stay on the needle until you finish the row

Personally I can understand both parties, one (as a crochet artist myself) it sucks where designs worked on for weeks are stolen, and the other where most people cannot afford paying 300$ for a shirt (as someone where we don't have thrift stores and you can only find cute clothes online at an affordable price). I think what would settle everything is if those big brands could possibly ask for permission to copy the designs or at least credit the original designers, so everybody would be happy. When doing content creation, we often credit the sources of the info/images/videos we used in the content, and it works just fine then. I've even seen some crochet artist ask other crochet artist if they can copy the way they did something for their own products that they sell with credits, and they often don't mind at all. I don't understand why they can't do the same thing

It definitely would be different if these types of companies asked permission first and made it transparent that the original designers approved of the alternative piece at a more accessible price point. Obviously and unfortunately there would still be a market for the lower quality fast fashion versions and making it clear that it's not the original design might motivate those who want to buy the higher quality product to buy directly from the designer... While fast fashion brands are taking advantage of the lack of legal protection or repercussions, this is part of the reason it's important for fashion to allow an exchange of ideas. You may never buy from DVF, but you can find a wrap dress at a price you can afford. You don't need to buy Chanel to have a quilted bag. There should be a way to stop the blatant copying (like the sweater with the exact same pattern) but allow similar designs to be sold in different price ranges.

Being unable to afford the originals does not mean being entitled to a cheap knock-off of it though. Fashion is a TOUGH industry to be a small maker/designer in. The people who are making the originals (for the most part, anyway, but obviously not Teuta Mitoshi) aren’t out here swimming in private pools and taking private nets either. They’re a small-business person who’s out here working their ass off to be noticed in an over-saturated market. You aren’t entitled to a knock-off version of their intellectual property. And what’s being showcased by Mia here isn’t “items taking inspiration or n from”, it’s direct knock-offs. Taking inspiration from someone else’s work is fine. Direct knock offs aren’t. Edited to add: if you think you’re poor, take a look at the lives of the people who are making these cheap knock offs for you with their bare hands. They are working in effective slave labour conditions, often in crowded and unsanitary living quarters provided by their employer overlords, hundreds to thousands of miles away from family (including their kids), with poisonous chemicals used in the making of the items risking their - AND YOUR - health.

I noticed Mia calling out when pieces were handmade.90% of the clothes you buy are probably handmade (even shein). Some clothes are made by machines but the cost of programming the machine for each piece of clothing costs lots of money so it only makes sense if its bulk The only thing that is different are the working conditions and places they are sewn.SHEIN has their products sewn where labor is cheap but the other small business probably have them sewn locally.

I am in the middle. I hate that big companies steal designs from smaller companies. I feel bad that I can never buy from them because they are so expensive. It feels that the high middle class or rich can buy from them most of the time. I get that you are paying for the quality and the labor, which these companies deserve, but again, many can’t afford it. I love the strawberry dress, but with my salary, I can never afford 500 dollars for it which makes the replicas tempting. I don’t know. It is that line I am confused on? How can we support smaller companies if they are priced heavily?

Haven't even started watching and this deserves a like. It's wonderful to see large-platform influencers bring this to people's attention. Luxury and indie fashion isn't a higher price tag for no reason. Garments should NOT cost less than a coffee. Who grows the crop? Harvests the yield? Spins the textile? Designs the idea? Samples the prototypes? Produces the product? Packages? Ships? Hosts the website? Pays the models? etc. SO much goes into garment production, and the disconnect the consumer faces against the product delivered to their door (through lack of education) is damaging independent businesses and those seeking to have a sustainable, ethical and positive footprint on the world in relation to their business. Bravo Mia 👏

Hey Mia, I think when you talk about “handmade items” it’s important to remember that just because it’s handmade in China doesn’t make it any less handmade and often the people in China are unbelievably skilled crafts people. So many more things than you’d imagine are created by hand in China and it’s important to respect the workers who in many cases don’t have a lot of agency for an alternative. It’s also important to note that places like aliexpress and Temu are online market places so it’s not these mega corporations stealing the designs (but they definitely could be doing more to stop it) and that in China they don’t have or enforce patient’s or copywrite. Obviously this doesn’t make it ethically correct and I’m not standing up for any original designs being stolen but I think it’s important to note on a cultural level.

Aliexpress is just a website just like Amazon. People have their own shops there, and not only from China. Exactly. They use low cost labor (many from China) to make their “designer” products. The only difference is the brand name.. people seem to think it’s okay to buy from Chanel, Gucci, Nike etc but it’s so terrible buying from Temu. These big brands also steal from unknown designers that can’t afford to sue them nor do they also have enough evidence to prove that the design was stolen. If someone’s gonna call out an unethical practice they should do all of them.

Something to think about along with all of this is that most people can’t afford high quality items and the only way to get something if it looks like that piece is on a cheaper cite. I know I can’t afford a 300 dollar bathing suit. Most people can barely pay their bills yet pay 80 dollars for a sustainable t shirt. I think it is good to support small businesses and that its bad that bigger corporations are stealing. But at the end of the day no body I know including myself can afford clothes from the mall or fancy Etsy shops. Mia acts like 500 dollars is cheap change and doesn’t have to worry about her next meal. Mia needs to open her eyes to what is around her there are bigger issues. Tbh her opinion is not valid to me because she doesn’t know what it is like when a five dollar t shirt is all you can afford.

It's great she's able to afford all of these stuff but acting like most people can afford such expensive clothes is just a bit insensitive. So Mia has come to learn that there is more to “cheap clothes” than the price you pay at the end of the day, hence moving her channel’s focus away from promoting the worst-of-the-worst websites, and you’ve all decided this is hypocritical? 🤦🏼‍♀️ There are thrift shops in every state that are crumbling under the weight of bought-but-never-worn clothing donations - that’s one alternative for you to TEMU, Shein, Wish, and AliExpress. Being more aware of trends being nothing more than a marketing cycle THAT YOU CAN OPT OUT OF, is another. And realising that Mia has been doing THRIFTING videos for literal years is a way she is showing that she IS living her message. Not to mention, she has the money to spend on Teuta Mitoshi dresses! She’s not poor! Jealousy is one thing, but holding it against her for becoming successful is hilarious 😂

@@rosey_ie First of all not everyone here is from US. Secondly do you understand why exactly are "thrift shops crumbling under the weight of bought-but-never-worn clothing"? Because of over consumerism. I've been Mia's subscriber for ages and I do love her content but she is indeed hypocritical. She is actively buying a ton of clothes, she has multiple videos of her clearing her closet and it was a huge amount of clothing. I do shop at fast fashion brands but I'll never come even remotely close to the amount of items she has. Most of the things she buys will end up never being worn and I will wear my $4 top for ages. So how is that not hypocrisy. I understand she's a content creator but why act like your content is not contributing to the problem of overconsumption?
@rosey_ie
@rosey_ie 9 ай бұрын
@@katerina5044 Well, given I’m not in the US, your “first of all” finger wag is more than a little unnecessary 🙋🏼‍♀️ And given the OP talked about dollars and malls, I think it’s reasonable of me to refer them to US examples. On to your “second of all”. Of course it’s due to consumerism. Rampant consumerism, in fact. OVER-consumerist capitalism, to be even more pointed about it. Which is in many ways hilarious, given companies like Temu, Shein and AliExpress are all based in an apparently socialist country, but that’s beside the point. A little like your rant at me - it’s all a bit “beside the point”. The OP is talking about how hypocritical of Mia it is to apparently be assuming that “$500 is small change” and that if people are poor they have to go to cheaper websites to buy what they want. Your point then is at odds with the OP’s, not in addition to, because the OP is talking about fuelling their consumerism. You’re apparently now talking about reducing consumerism? I mean, I agree with you, 100%. But I don’t agree with the OP that Mia is being a hypocrit for educating herself on the fact that shops/websites she used to promote aren’t the best places in the world to be buying from. And if Mia wants to learn from her former “mistakes” by changing her opinion on them, she is not being hypocritical. She’s learning and growing. So yeh, I know why thrift shops are crumbling under the weight of bought-but-never-worn clothes. Capitalism = Marketing = over-consumption = poverty and excess So what was your point?
