In 1990 Steele published a book, The Content of Our Character, where he fully elucidates this argument. This is an ok preview, but notice this man is not called upon at the natl level to move the discourse forward. He is offering a viable way for us to get past this issue. Both sides aren't listening, esp the liberal side who have made race a cottage industry. Cheers to Mark Levin for his intellectual honesty.

And you pronounce judgement based on a video clip of a much longer interview. Young man, have you read his books, listened to his talks? There are plenty on KZbin. I suggest you get educated.

In another Podcast Mr Steele ask “suppose individual responsibility was the greatest power available to black Americans”. Now, beside the fact that this is true regardless of anyone’s pigment; lets consider this in the context of Critical Theory, of if you will, Critical Race Theory, where the lens is oppressor/oppressed, victor/victim, while downplaying free agency to the point of hopelessness. Individual responsibility for one’s self is the essence of free agency. With it you take responsibility for your presentation to the world. Despite obstacles you empower yourself to overcome, and collectively you demonstrate its truth and your worthiness as equal to all anyone and everyone around you. You create the evidence of your equality, even the opportunity for excellence. The opposite, the victor/victim paradigm, is on the other hand self-fulfilling. Like the old saw, “if you think you can’t or if you think you can, both will be true”. Now, for this Podcast: “Shelby Steele - White Guilt and the Identity of Innocence” This will cost less you than ten minutes to understand this thought: Innocence is sought by the left. Why? Because it is they who are guilty of the most insidious racism which is the soft bigotry of low expectations. If they are not therefor innocent then wouldn’t it stand to reason their house of cards has no real foundation. Beware what you imbibe. Another old saw: “you are what you eat”.

Right on - and so clear - trying to find innocence - one finds healing by faith in Jesus Christ, is my view. Trust in Jesus, be forgiven of any sin. And no we are not bigots or racists. Have not been. But if you're searching for innocence and forgiveness, look to God for His approval. His first directive is "love others as I have loved you" - Thanks Mr. Steele.

Steele is using terms like America Sin and America's History as relates to Black issues and slavery. Slavery was not "America's Sin," it was a worldwide accepted practice but in America it was fought by a substantial portion of the population. One of the colonies banned it, but the King overrode that so slavery could not be banned by colonies that wanted to. That was a huge part of America's founding. American culture is found in the Declaration of Independence and The Constitution. The first draft by Jefferson eliminated slavery. That was argued and dropped out of the final document because Southern states were needed to form a union that could defeat the British, but it planted the foundation for the abolition of slavery. The states that seceded over slavery and formed a new country was not tolerated by Lincoln and the North. Lincoln quoted often the Constitution and the argument that it abolishes slavery. He was also not going to have a slavery embracing country on our border which would obviously lead to constant battle on there and be a risk to our national security. I wish those who are mostly sensible about the Black issues would frame their arguments more precisely. Don't use misleading terms like America's sin and America's history. The enormous good that America has done the world was a freeing people from the sin, and is the most glorious part of America's history.

There is nothing inglorious in acknowledging that America fought both for and against the abolition of slavery. You say that the slaveholders were not tolerated by the North. It is as well to say that the abolitionists were not tolerated by the South. The Civil War was fought in part to resolve a division in America's conscience. Do not pretend that America was only ever on the side of the good. We can still love our nation without denying what it has done.

Let's put it this way, it may have been a global sin and it was a sin of necessity to some. however for the U.S. it is a sin of coupability. We knew it was wrong and every time we pushed against it, we allowed it to happen. Had our character been stronger at the start. Had we just pushed harder to remove slavery and not allow a civil war to happen that was over taxes and property rights. We would have not had to pay for the absolvsion of that sin with blood. So in essence he is right, but not for the reason you think. If you see someone committing evil, you try to stop them if you have the ability to do so (either using your 2A right or calling the appropriate authority), as good moral people we should not allow evil to go unchecked in our neighborhoods.

@@everyonethinksyoureadeathm5773 "WE" means everyone. But "we" were not a homogeneous group but rather thousands arriving from many directions at different times and backgrounds. Acceptance of slavery would arrive with them even though individuals would be against it. England forbade any colony to abolish slavery. You can't claim that those who embraced the "morality" of slavery were better than those embraced slavery in every other part of the world. There was always contention between the slave holders and the abolitionists. The Dred Scott decision forced us into the Civil War. The good guys won. Let's rejoice.

The problem I have is that intellectuals respond to the media rather than everyday people. They assume that these media pundits speak to the concerns of ordinary people, which may not be the case. This is a downside of capitalism I believe. The media is driven by at least in part, profit. The concerns of everyday people are likely less sensational than what's being reported.

I think framing black power movements in correlation to white guilt is interesting, but shaming white people or calling for handouts are not the point of black power or racial justice messages (white guilt may be a byproduct- but it is not the point nor the aim). It is about acknowledging that there are structures, systems, cultures in place today that stemmed from a racist history, and about validating the current struggle to achieve individual empowerment and collective healing in this environment. In fact, the constant denial and dismissal of this perpetuates damage and continues the vicious cycle of intergenerational inequality. Having your existence and sense of worth continually validated by historical narratives and historical examples of social/political representation is a huge advantage that white people do have in being able to “pull yourself up by your bootstraps,” or even believing that you can.

Joel Harvey To essentially say “yes it happened but let’s move on already” is the equivalent of dismissing the low-grade trauma many individuals actually feel from this collective history, and it is continually damaging- especially if those words come from a white person. Also, non-white people don’t need white guilt. The point of discussing the past is not to dwell on it. It is to make the point that they need a system that works for them TODAY that acknowledges that they are not starting from the same economic or social starting line BECAUSE of the past. Individuals are not born in a vacuum nor do they exist in one. History builds contexts to individual lives and present circumstances.
@joeblow1942
@joeblow1942 4 жыл бұрын
@@meepo08 You can and should discuss history but to use slavery has a cudgel to indoctrinate and victimize people NOW for the purposes of creating division and a dependable/dependant on the state voting block is reprehensible. And let's face it, the US had slavery for about 80 years whereas millions upon millions have been enslaved all over the world for over a thousand years and slavery still exists in open markets in the middle east. This isn't even taking into consideration the massive multi billion dollar global sex slave trafficking market that few are willing to discuss. Lastly, "a system that works for them" is a system that maximizes freedom for all with little to no state intervention UNLESS the individual is doing something that infringes upon the rights of others.

There is nothing behind the argument. Do you really mean that what you said? And, what is your point. Blacks and people of color suffered from racism 400 years ago in this country and across the world. They still suffer from the hands of oppression. We’ve been blocked from wealth. We die disproportionately in the hands of the police. We are under represented in the workplace but over represented in the prison system. Your rhetoric is off course and misses the greater points. You seem to be stating that these inequalities are not happening (still) and that blacks and people of color have no reason to complain. Wow! My mother once told me, “with all of your getting, make sure you get an understanding”. You seem to miss that part. Racism is real. Our country was build on it. You are either an active or a passive participant. Ignoring or allowing revisionist to tell a different story does nothing to address it. It simply allows the beneficiary to go on unchecked. More importantly it denies our children the Truth that will set us all free!
