That tip about picking something and taking the time to explore it and study it with your art and then moving on if it doesn't serve you is such a good piece of wisdom. I need to remember that when I have art block or no motivation, just choose something, commit to it for a while and see how it serves you. I love this series, so fun to see what comes out of the mold, your painting is beautiful, and you are so fun and enjoyable to listen to.
@ShelbySherritt3 жыл бұрын
I AM SO HAPPY IT HELPED! I think this little nugget of wisdom is why I have never really had art block. I have definitely had moments of the I cant be bothered but I always have ideas. Knock on wood though! I hope it helps with your future art block times!

"pick a topic" "what are your themes" was the worst thing for me in fine art at uni. I just had no idea where to start and used to wail to friends "just let me make stuff!". You put the solution so well, it's so good to listen to you talk about this while you paint. Thank you. (for cash strapped artists, check out the local opp shops. there is always a stash getting cleaned out. i have a heap of ceramics tools from opp shops.) The cups are so good! (the wattle is my favourite)

For anyone who has to pick a limited colour pallet, as another artist who has had to do so due to financial reasons, I highly suggest the following: Mid range blue: I prefer ultramarine but it does lean more green than purple. *Yellow:* I suggest the brighter the better. You can always dull a colour through mixing but you can never really brighten colours. And I don't mean lighten, but I'll get to that. *Mid range red:* I recommend crimson but it is a little dark. Again, brighter is better but do look for something that doesn't lean too purple or too orange. *And finally, White:* You can always mix colours with their complementary colour in order to acheive a darker colour, just like you can to desaturate it. Likewise, you can mix all the colours above (minus white) to get a colour close enough to black that your contrasts will still pop. What you can't do, however, is lighten a colour by mixing RYB. You can also get CYM with the above as they're basically just red and blue mixed with white respectively. So in short, so long as you get a neutral range of blue and red, along with a nice bright yellow and pure as you can get white, you can mix a decent-beautiful version of every colour there is. If you can budget for 7 colours, I suggest both a warm and cool red, warm and cool blue, yellow, white, and black. The black though is to get that deepest tone, is mostly because people tend to use mostly black and it will save your other colours for things that are those colour haha. I hope this can help anyone reading ^-^♡

I adore the Desert Pea. My Dad was working in the bush, and he came back in time for my 6th birthday clutching a big fistful of them for me, They grew all around the airport at that time. Later a neighbour put in a huge garden bed, filled it in with a mass of gravel to give great drainage, and managed to grow the most wonderful healthy Desert Pea plants in Perth. I walked past them to school every day, watching them grow and finally flower. They are magical to me. Your native plant art is lovely.

We did a similar process in architecture school to find our design voice.... I chose an unrelated designer who does shoes, Stuart Weitzman, to study the perfection of the proportions and use those to inspire and form my own opinions on scale and space relationships. Working through that process was so neat to see my own thoughts develop into areas I hadn't unlocked before.

That is great advice for anyone in the creative industries!! I think a lot of people starting out (i include myself in this) get caught up in getting 'the best' brand and the biggest range of colours/fabrics/brushes etc. Its fine to buy a 12 pack of a cheaper brand if thats all you can afford to start with. You can slowly build you collection even if its 2 pens/pencils/tubes of paint a paycheck.
