"Hello, we’re Pungu Borneo, a social enterprise from Sarawak, Malaysia, dedicated to preserving Borneo’s rich cultural heritage while empowering indigenous communities. At the heart of our mission lies the preservation of Traditional Knowledge and Traditional Cultural Expressions-or TK and TCE-which are the living essence of our identity.
Today, many of these traditions are at risk of disappearing due to globalization and generational gaps. Indigenous artisans, especially women, struggle to sustain their livelihoods. That’s where Pungu Borneo steps in.
We bridge tradition and modernity, combining centuries-old craftsmanship with cutting-edge technologies like artificial Intelligence, augmented reality and blockchain. These tools allow us to modernize traditional crafts while ensuring their authenticity and traceability on a global scale. Programs like our Pangieh Juli initiative, which transforms traditional Job’s Tear seeds into jewelry, empower artisans and celebrate our heritage.
To date, we’ve collaborated with over 50 indigenous artisans, increasing their income by 30% and creating sustainable livelihoods. Our work has gained global recognition, from representing Malaysia at WIPO in Geneva to showcasing Sarawak’s crafts internationally.
Winning the Shell LiveWIRE Top Ten Innovators award would enable us to scale these efforts-expanding our programs, preserving more TK and TCE, and connecting even more communities to global markets.
