This Shellac Burn Encaustic Piece was a big success!! Mixing my own shellac has definitely given my shellac burn pieces an added boost of awesomeness. Here I'm using a 3 pound cut shellac mix and adding color with alcohol inks.
Part 1 of this video is here- • Shellac Burn Encaustic...
In the last video, I experimented with a 1 pound cut and a 2 pound cut of shellac I mixed myself.

Thank you for this, your painting looks awesome! I'm just beginning to get back into encaustic painting and I'm struggling with pinholes. I notice you just leave them. Do you normally let them go or do you know how to fix them without melting everything back? Thank you.

The more layers of wax you add, the fewer holes there will be. So if there's too many holes, add more wax. Fuse it well, then repeat if necessary. But I don't mind them.

I think this is awesome....but have a question. Does the shellac stay on the surface? So is it more shiny than the wax itself after fusing? I'm not sure if I said that right.
@thefarpavilion
@thefarpavilion 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it stays. Burning it causes it to contract and form the cells you see, so it ends up not being over the whole surface, but it is shinier than the wax, especially with metallic colors like this.

Until it's no longer sticky- between 10 and 15 minutes, depending on how thick your application is.

how do you finish your work, would the heat of resin curing ruin it?
@thefarpavilion
@thefarpavilion 2 жыл бұрын
Do you mean, adding a layer or resin over the wax? I've never tried that, I have no idea, honestly, how that would work. You don't need to do anything to finish encaustic paintings except buff them with a soft cloth every few months as the wax cures.

Just curious why you don't buy liquid shellac?
@thefarpavilion
@thefarpavilion 8 ай бұрын
I used to. But I struggled a lot with my results, and it would go bad so quickly. Then someone suggested I make my own. Once I found a ratio of shellac to alcohol that worked well, my burns have been so much better.

Hey. Do you measure the shellac flakes by weight, or liquid ounce?
@thefarpavilion
@thefarpavilion 11 ай бұрын
By weight. I always use 1.5 ounces of shellac flakes, then add a half cup of denatured alcohol. This gives me a 3 pound cut of shellac.

@@thefarpavilion thank you! I guess you make it look easy, because I have been trying for two days to get the same affect as your white ocean foam. I don’t know what I did wrong, but my shellac looks really cloudy and milky, I just used the measurements in a super blonde shellac flakes, that I bought on Amazon, and it also looks a lot thicker than yours, it coats the sides of the glass when I shake it like a slight thicker consistency than yours, which is why I would be confused to find out I had put too much denatured alcohol or something. I wouldn’t think that too many shellac flakes would produce no cells would it? I can’t get any normal looking cells with the plain shellac or the shellac that I added the white alcohol ink to. I’m wondering if I should get some more shellac flakes to see if it’s not concentrated enough, so I don’t have to throw the whole thing away, as I did a double batch, because I’m working on a large piece. Hhaha. Let me know if you have any experience with this. My measurements must have been off somehow. Thanks.

@@thefarpavilion also, can you share with me what brand of alcohol ink you use? The brand I tried, it separated, pretty quickly. I had to keep shaking it up in the shellac. It got kind of clumpy actually like it was curdling. It’s pretty much a disaster over here lol.

How do you make the black base ? I’ve made only one. It was hard to make
@thefarpavilion
@thefarpavilion 3 жыл бұрын
Denise, I mix black dry pigment into my clear wax until I get a good amount of pigment. Then i add 3 layers of that to my wood board. You can purchase a brick of black medium, and that will give you great coverage since they are highly pigmented.

@@denisemegow2963 you can use a little oil paint, but it needs to be wet. Also, don't use too much or it will dilute the resin in your wax too much.
@denisemegow2963
@denisemegow2963 3 жыл бұрын
What I meant to say is that I put the oil paint out on a paper towel to leach out some of the linseed oil. Then I mixed the resulting paste with my medium. Thanks for the tip about not using too much. I didn’t know it would make my medium not as hard.

What do you mean by 3lb. cut?
@thefarpavilion
@thefarpavilion Жыл бұрын
It refers to the amount of shellac per gallon of alcohol. A 3lb. Cut means there are 3 pounds of shellac for every gallon of alcohol. I shrink this down cause I don't make that much shellac, but that's the formula.
