Your videos are the best introduction to wood finishing on the web. Great work, great demonstration! I would mention that (1) prepared shellac or opened cans may not keep more than several months, and (2) while dewaxed shellac is extremely compatible other finishes, the non-dewaxed (aka waxed) stuff you are using here has some issues. Most shellac hating is a result of overlooking these two things. It really is very easy and pleasant to work with, as you show.

I am not a guitar player, Thank you for your video. It help me understand and how to use shellac on my vintage travel trailer. 1945. You help me in picking the wood and the color outcome. Save me a whole lot of guessing.and gave me confidants to start shellacing my whole travel trailer from the inside. Thank you. From Dillon,Montana

@yoheff988 Other than doing a French Polish with the shellac, which would really give a nice gloss, there is really no great method other than encapsulating it in another clear coat that is in turn polished to a gloss, or leveling the finish and applying a very thin shellac coat on top to keep the sheen up. I am loading a video now that explains your question in detail, it's called Shellac Part 2. Hopefully you get a good answer from it.

@yoheff988 I just went into the shop and tried a very very basic french polish on the soundboard cutoff that I have been showing in the videos, and with just the shellac and some olive oil for lubrication I was able to get a very smooth and level finish with more shine than before. I'm going to do some more French Polishing in the shop and then I may post a video once I get the technique mastered. It's a long, tiring, and tedious finish, but the look of a good French Polish is amazing.

They go fine, for sure if you buy dewaxed flakes. But the shellac is transparent, so you'll just get an amber layer over your unhappy color.

Great video, how would you polish this finish to a high gloss?

thx for awesome vid, just some little question: i'm planning on building a guitar myself for the first time, will this be an easy to do finish for a starter? if so, does it matter if i dye the wood first with water-based dye? will that cause any trouble? also, if i use some flame maple, will the schellack raise the grain on it's own?

How does shellac apply over a guitar body stained with a water based aniline dye?
