Nice documentation of the rebuild. It'll be great to see video from the cab of this loco one day when pulling some heavy loads!

Had to work a local freight and our order for the day was loading 200 cars of trap rock ( ballast). Our power when I saw it I asked if there were any other locomotive's available, I was told these two were it. I told my crew it was going to be a slow long day as the two units were GE U-28B's. Of all the Uboats the U28's were the slowest loading engines GE ever produced. Once they were loaded up they were ok but until they got there it was My God are these units ever going to load up. The yard we went to work at is a 1/2 percent grade heading west and just doubling our train over so we could depart took 8 minutes after I opened the throttle before I began to move west. My conductor actually climbed up on the lead unit thinking I was screwing around on him and found throttle in the fourth notch and after 4 minutes from when I opened the throttle was still slowly accelerating towards the 4th notch at which point when it reached the 4th notch rpm wise then it slowly started to increase the load on the main generator. Once she loaded up she was fine but it made fore a long long day. Got called for a trap Rock extra and found 4 units 2 U25B's and the 2 U28B units. Fortunately the U25B units respond quickly. We were taking the trap rock to Selkirk, New York so I asked if there was a pusher available, there was and the dispatcher was why do you want the pusher at Westfield? Because if I pick him up at Chester I have two very slow loading units that take ten minutes to reach a full load. I heard the pusher ask if I had a couple of the 2800's. I said I did and he told the dispatcher I was absolutely correct in requesting the pusher at Westfield. After he tied on it being a 1 mile slight downgrade we had no trouble getting up to 30 mph but then started to lose speed as we got on the grade and a deadhead crew riding those two units reported they never saw any units load up as slow as they did but after 10 minutes they reported they were finally were showing 900 plus amps on each unit, the train was 10,000 tons and even with the pusher (SD40-2 ) it was a battle until finally we went through Washington Cut at the top of the Mountain.

Note, This locomotive was purchased by Shelly Materials when they purchased the operations of La Farge and of former owner White Stone. This engine operates @ W130th st yard and the other U23B works next to the NS yard in Twinsburg,Ohio.

Ok I gotta ask... How can you all tell the model of some of the trains. Certain ones there is a huge difference but some look exactly the same to me.
