I love wind in the desert. That is the kind of thing that can make me stay up all night long to listen to it and sit outside in it while nursing a cold beer. One of my favorite places is the Lodge At Summer Lake in eastern Oregon. It is a lodge/restaurant combo out by the Summer Lake National Wildlife refuge. Every night, the wind comes down off of Winter Rim, a long two- or three-thousand-foot-high escarpment behind the Lodge like a hurricane. The huge old willows and cottonwoods around the lodge whip about crazily while coyotes sing in the distant darkness and the moon blazes down out of a sky that seems almost white with stars. As for the two dudes with shotguns, I agree with you entirely. No matter how inconvenienced you may feel, the right thing to do is just accept that someone else got there first and go away. I thought everyone knew that you cannot bring firearms into a National Park, but I guess some folks are a bit denser than others.

Emmett's place, has some great books available. He built the cabin and knew Manson. Mrs Harder used to run the Panamint Breeze monthly newsletter. I stayed there for a few days in 2020. Nice and peaceful that trip. I left all the food that's seen in the video. That woodstove is awesome!!

My two sons and I were just in Butte Valley and braved the sand storms at Stovepipe Wells, riding our dual sport bikes leaning into the wind. We stayed at Mesquite Springs and then moved to Texas Springs for the remainder of our stay. It was always a great feeling to return to the camper after two nights venturing out ,sleeping in tents. Having a place to cook meals, take showers, and sleep on a real bed. We had such a wonderful time this year and look forward to doing it again. I always enjoy your videos because when I was young my family went to Death Valley for Christmas from Oregon on a regular basis. Thanks.

I had an incident two years ago kinda like the one you read. I arrived at a fairly popular cabin on a Monday morning in hopes of finding it unoccupied for a mid week stay. I put up the flag and moved in. Later that afternoon I heard a bunch of vehicles outside. Three trucks, six people. A couple of them came up to the cabin door, knocked, and asked how long I was planning to stay. I told them 3 possibly 4 days. They then proceeded to drive down a couple of hundred yards below the cabin and set up camp. They started drinking and partying which at first was OK but then the guns came out. They started doing target practice across the canyon with full automatic and semi auto weapons. I always carry a pistol on my trips but I don't make a habit of shooting off rounds, only there if absolutely necessary. Next morning they started in again. It was just intimidation. Later that morning one of them came up again and asked when I was going to leave. I stayed one more night just for the principle of it then left early on a Wed morning. This also happened a week before Thanksgiving. The thing was a half a dozen other vehicles drove up during the two days I was there, saw the flag up, respected it and left me alone....

Becarefull of the high winds in DV. In taking the DV route to Trona in the early 70s, a wind storm blew in black out driving conditions. Which brought traffic to a halt except for the brave few like myself. It was down around the dunes which was the worst. You could barely see the road, covered with sand. Cars that parked on the rd were a real danger, with sand piling up mid door height. It was so dusty inside of a closed car I was wearing a bandana around the face. Only able to creep along at 5-10 mph for 1.5 hrs. When I finllya hot out of my car, I saw the real damage. The sand had blaster away areas of the vinyl roof and the paint has been sandblasted off the sides of the car. My band new rims also had a different look. And my windows were frosted over by the sands. All needing to be replaced. When the insurance adjuster saw the damage he asked "couldn't you have gotten an accident son?" he wanted to total my car out from a sand storm So beware of those high winds around the Dunes Kid's
