Clues that "Shemp" wasn't Shemp: 1. He was always on his back or side to the cameras or covering his face like on 1:58 and 2:29. He was visibly taller than the actual Shemp (Shemp was 5'5'' and Joe was 5'8''), so Palma was forced to hunch his back when standing. 3. Scheming Schemers was the best post-Shemp death filmed episode. Stock Footage mixed up with the New Footage real well. And I also liked the way Jules mixed it up in that episode. By using the scenes where Moe and Shemp plug the water pipes first and then using Shemp going up to where the bathroom and bathtub is, switching from that to Moe and Larry and Shemp gets the last shot before the closing credits. And also, Scheming Schemers is my favorite plumbing short. And it's funny how 3 different Directors Directed each plumbing short, A Plumbing We Will Go (1940) Hugh McCollum, and Del Lord Producer, and Del Lord Director. Vagabond Loafers (1949) Produced by Hugh McCollum and Directed by Edward Bernds. Scheming Schemers (1956) Produced and Directed by Jules White.

To be fair Joe Derita and Joe Besser were both a huge disadvantage when they joined the stooges. They didn't have the time in that Curly and Shemp both had. By the time Besser had joined the Columbia shorts department had already been gutted of most of their best writers and directors. Even the last year of Shemp shorts were of low quality. When DeRita came in Moe and Larry were pushing 70 years old. Regardless of who the 3rd stooges was, they would never be on the top of their game again. Given more time to develop as stooges, I believe that Besser and DeRita, both could have hit their stride and developed into classic stooges. The circumstances were never right, though.

It must have been pretty sad and awful that moe had to call Joe Palma Shemp in those four shorts

Did they think no one would notice?

Not really. Edward Bernds (a writer and director of the Stooges Shorts from 1945-1951) said, that audiences could not tell old from new. They just thought they were watching a brand new short by them.

I liked both Curly and Shemp. They both Cracked me up. The others that came after them were not that good.

I think it sucks that they redid some shorts with shemp. It must have been weird to replace your brother in the same scene he played as well as it didn't give shemp his proper place. Like he was solidified as a replacement even tho he was his own stooge

Joe DeRita was good as well, Joe Besser however? Now that’s a different story
