It definitely is a chance to go back to a magic moment in gaming, as the millenium approached. It was one of several life changing games I remember of that era (Panzer Dragoon Saga, Shining Force 3, Baldur's Gate, Shenmue, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII and Deus Ex) that really made gaming seem it could be an art, something for adults, with something deep to say. Honestly, despite the great improvements in graphics I have been pretty disappointed in what has come since. I just remember 1995-2000 as so many great games, so little controversy.

One of the many things i love about the old Shenmue games is that they feel very relaxing to me that you can just walk around the world and talk to people and do side stuff so im a little worried that you needing to worry about eating food to not lose health in Shenmue 3 will ruin that but maybe it wont be a big deal after upgrading yourself. Anyway the Shenmue games are my favorite games of all time so im extremely happy that Shenmue 3 is out.
@budgiecat90395 жыл бұрын
Key word: Walk. In Shenmue 3 as long as you WALK you will not lose energy. Its when you run that you do. But apparently that can be upgraded. This is something I wish Final Fantasy VII Remake woulda stuck to (not a stamina thing but the way Cloud looked malnourished in the original gameplay reveal trailer (when CC2 was still attached). I attributed this super skinny look of his early in the game's story to his "Mako poisoning", and thought that the game woulda made him bulk up over time as he got healthier as you leveled up. Buuuuut....then they went and threw that concept away with the redesigns in the newer trailers and demo. Now he just will look the same throughout the whole game. bummer..
@eternalpain77625 жыл бұрын
Not sure if you've gotten the game and noticed, but technically you can run for as long as you'd like. It's just that, once your stamina gets low, then you'll need to take short breaks and wait for it recharge before you can run again (you can still walk through), so it's not too bad. Either way, in my opinion, managing your stamina is just the perfect balance between engaging and not obnoxious.

Great non-spoiler review! I got my kickstarter copies just this past Monday and picked up my day 1 retail copy yesterday. Like you, I imported the original Japanese version of Shenmue 1. I remember I got my copy of the Japanese version of Shenmue on December 31, 1999. When it was the year 2000 Arizona time (where I was living), the first thing I did when it was 2000 was exploring the Hazuki house. I was 15 1/2 at the time. When I was living in Arizona, I went to a high school that offered Japanese classes. I had a year and a half of study of Japanese at the time and I had the highest grade. Despite my achievements, I only understood the basics such as directions and greetings. I used Shenmue to assist me with my Japanese throughout high school, university, and even now.

I feel like they are missing the point of what made the shenmue games so great.. It was a technical marvel, a immensely groundbreaking and innovative triple a title that pushed the medium forward by utilizing the best that technology and the industry had to offer.. It was ambitious and for the time it certainly showed. That's why I loved it, it felt huge and amazing, like I could do anything.. It was similar to playing an elder scrolls game for the first time. But now it's just a hodgepodge of aging nostalgic gameplay mechanics.. They've stuck so close to the previous titles that it just ends up holding the game back.. The previous titles are so old at this point, they should've given us more than a direct sequel that feels twenty years late. Instead of doing what the first two games did and push the medium forward, they just played it safe and gave us a game that feels like it belongs in 2002.. I get it, they had a limited budget so they stuck to simply providing fans with that shenmue charm that they loved, but it's not what made shenmue great, at least not to me...
@Benbeanuts5 жыл бұрын
Read my mind. I still remember being in awe of how the graphics and roleplaying aspects looked in the Dreamcast magazine demo preview videos before Shenmue (1998) was released. Now I cant help but feel very underwhelmed by this sequel when compared to the original; the grandeur is just not there. Shenmue 1 and 2 feel modern compared to this.

The witcher 3 cost $81 million to make. Not sure where you got that info from. Trying to push limits in games in 2019 with $7 million dollar budget isn't possible. Especially when the original cost around $70 million dollars to make 20 years ago. Shenmue 3 didn't even reach all it's kickstarter goals. Yu Suzuke and co had to make do with all they had. And still put out a fun game that looks beautiful in it's own way.
@budgiecat90395 жыл бұрын
They literally HAD to because this was an indie kickstarted game without a major publisher on a limited budget that was 1/4th the amount of the original games' budget (1/7th if you still believe the original alleged budget amount for them ("70 million") which Yu later corrected to more like 40 million). Had this game been backed by a fully confident SEGA lets say, than perhaps they could have pushed it to what you are considering BUT consider this: Even the BIGGEST most ambitious open world modern games (Read Dead Redemption 1&2, Death Stranding, Spider-Man, Grand Theft Auto V, Witcher 3, Watch Dogs, Sleeping Dogs, Assassin's Creed, Final Fantasy XV, Skyrim, Dragon Age, Batman Arkham Knight, Days Gone, Infamous Second Son, Mass Effect, Final Fantasy VII remake, Cyberpunk 2077 and Yakuza series) NONE of them still have any where the amount of level of detail Shenmue has in terms of interactive environments down to opening any drawers, cupboards, food, the fact that EVERY NPC is voiced and there are NO clones. The fact there's a day to night system with weather. The fact that every NPC has a daily schedule etc. All of that if you incorporated into say GTA V, or the next GTA, or Cyberpunk, or Beyond Good & Evil 2, in a fully realized open world etc, with new ground breaking photo realistic technology, you would have a budget well over 500 million easily. And it would have to be a mid 9th gen or late 9th gen release on PS5 for it to fully take advantage of the hardware and wow people over. There's a reason Star Citizen (lol Scam Citizen) still isnt finished and has a crazy funded budget like that. A game that would be 'the next huge leap' in the way Shenmue did it back in 1999 would be phenomenally expensive.

Mmm... I don't know.....I consider myself a big Shenmue fan. I played them on my dreamcast. But after entering the world of yakuza, I expected more from this. Yakuza(spiritual succesor) has evolved a lot more than this. And after playing"Judgement" its hard to me to get along with visuals. Maybe Im being a little picky, and have to be greatful to have it (at least) after many years. I'll buy it in a couple of months...for a nostalgic feeling. But to be honest Im not too much into playing it right now. Anyways nice review!! Greetings from Mexico City!!

I agree. From the downgraded graphics and move-sets this feels like an inferior Shenmue experience.

@@Benbeanuts Hope next Shenmue experience( if there is one) be better than this. By the moment Im enjoying Yakuza style games....Imagine a Shenmue experience using Yakuza series engine and movement. However this is better than nothing....Greetings!!!

Only gripe I have with the game is our health depletes while we're walking forcing us to keep eating & having to purchase food hopefully a patch is implemented to be a little lenient about the walking now if it was running I wouldn't mind energy depleting

Are you fucking telling me that the story doesn't end in this game? I was devastated when the first game ended on that boat, and the sequel wasn't coming to the US. It finally came to the XBOX, but when once again Lan Di slipped through my fingers - and TWENTY FUCKING YEARS PASSED... I can't do this again... I can't handle another cliffhanger with no real promise of conclusion.

I like the game so far. My only gripes are: >Where is Shenhua's original outfit? Did she change it in the cave or something? >Ryu's leather jacket looks a bit off. Like its suede. >some of the npc's look a bit weird as mentiioned >No throws. Odd considering Ryo is supposed to be a Jujitsu expert. No Virtua Fighter engine. >The clouds look a bit cartoony. Like an old Chinese oil painting. I think this was done on purpose because I remember an earlier trailer them looking better. Weird change then. >the need to eat & drink mechanic is new and cool but I'd have liked to see the animation of you eating and drinking. Drinking was animated in the original Shenmue games so this is sorely missed. I know newer Yakuza games started to do that (drinking from cans), but recently I played Yakuza 7 demo and they took it out (again) as well. Not sure why. bummer. >There's Mook Jong wooden dummy for training but the only thing you do in front of them is...holding a horse stance? Why would you need a Mook Jong for that lol. Mook Jong is for practicing your Wing Chun kung fu hand strikes and blocks. I know one NPC character looks like he's performing it in game but he's not even touching the wooden arms lol. Would have been nice to have that part of the game. They would have needed to motion capture an actual Wing Chun martial artist and map all the "Bon Sao" and "Ton Sao" moves accordingly which probably would have been more expensive than their budget allowed? Dunno. Maybe DLC? Only Wing Chun practictioners in game we got so far for video games is Donnie Yen's Ip Man character in Shaolin vs Wutang indie fighting game for Steam, and the upcoming Leroy Smith DLC character for Tekken 7. Even Virtua Fighter never had a Wing Chun expert. (and no Jackie Bryant doesnt count he's Jeet Kune Do. Same with Jann Lee of Dead or Alive and Marshall/Forest Law of Tekken.)

It's been an absolute shamozzle. First it was 2 days after launch (which is just anti-consumer). Then at the last minute Deep Silver changed it to day of launch. Well, it's day of launch in Oz. So I figure I'm going ahead, you know?
