It's so weird that a Blueray release hasn't happened yet. It has to be because of this whole weird situation concerning the rights of the anime. It's pretty unfortunate. I didn't even like the anime all that much, and I still got a bootleg version of it from Ebay for the collection 😅

I got the unofficial Home Release Version in English with a quit nice Cover Artwork. It’s better then nothing . But still do wierd that they didn’t release anything

Great video Matt and I know your working on very low information because theses companies don’t want us to know anything but personally I don’t want to keep buying merch to fill sagas pockets more when they give the community nothing sega will throw 100s of money on projects then cancel them 3/4 completed and yet they won’t spend money on shenmue games when there is fans to sell the product to a lot of what sega do does not make sense to me. Might just be me being frustrated with no shenmue 4 new 😂 #letsgetshenmue4

Shenmue Online falls under that umbrella. I think the community is ready for an online Shenmue World. It was a little ahead of the curve when it was first announced especially for an emerging market like Korea.

@cubeb3 it won't happen. Certainly not in the guise that it was in 2004-2006 and that game is tied up in litigation further than I can see. I've been trying to dig into at and multiple employees won't go on record about it says all you need to know. Also the GaaS market is so saturated I'd argue it's a bigger risk than a new mainline Shenmue title. How does it standout from the others? How is it unique? Sega spent a tonne on Hyenas which was canned and poorly received in previews from what I understand. The Anime is way less of a risk financially in comparison and actually had success despite being cancelled due to the WBD merger.

I absolutely feel it was a missed opportunity. I mean Warner Brothers is responsible for cutting it to save money. But I think the plan was maybe to have two seasons and obviously it was doing well and it would have worked wonderfully into making either remakes or continuing the story into the fourth game so that they could keep making more episodes 👍

Gonna be honest. I feel like the anime a bit rushed in certain places and there were moments that they could’ve done certain scenes and scenarios differently (and of course I think it’s absolute bs about the anime and season 2 being canned because of that whole corporate issue) but all in all I legitimately enjoyed it and loved it. One of the best animes based on video games that I’ve seen personally, captures Shenmue kinda ok in my opinion. Lastly, my GOD the undead-noid op music is SO goddamn good in my opinion! Top 3 op songs of any anime for me. I still listen to it pretty regularly!

If the games won't finish the storyline I really hope the anime will be the chosen alternative. Of course having both would be nice but if the game(s) won't come to fruition the anime would be the best option for closure. I can imagine it would attract more viewers since it would be new content compared to telling the already existing story of the first 2 games.

All I know is I’ve taken a vow to write a Shenmue light novel series that will conclude the story in the event Yu Suzuki dies without doing so.

Unfortunately they dropped the ball with the anime and Shenmue 3. The anime was so bad that if they even tried to continue it they wouldn't have that much material because they rushed through the whole thing. Even if they caught up to the part of the story where the games left off, i wouldn't trust the anime creators to finish off the story without rushing through and fleshing the story out. Rather than take the time to build the world and create a following so they can gain new fans to sell merchandise, they'll be cheap and give us more trash. No disrespect to Yu Suzuki and I could be wrong, but at this point I think he has to shoulder some of the blame on why these opportunities keep failing. With a story as big and great as Shenmue you can't cut corners, but this is what it seems like they're doing

The Anime itself was fairly well received in and out of the community and was their best performing Anime in 2022. Yu Suzuki wasn't directly involved with it but definitely had some input here and there. A future season would take material from Shenmue 3 and the written novel to carry things forwards. As for Shenmue 3 check the interview with Ryan Payton to understand the challenges they had.

I wouldn’t go that far, but truthfully I was searching for a comment like this. I was underwhelmed by the anime. It was shocking how much they had to cut out to fit everything in 13 episodes but it wasn’t surprising, we knew the episode count. Yu Suzuki said he wished Shenmue 1 got all 13 episodes.

I agree with a lot of this sentiment. The pacing of the anime did not match the vibe of the games at all, rushing Ryo from one fight to the next. It was the downtime and human interaction that made the games so appealing and the show just skipped over all that and we never really got to care about the characters. I'm in a weird place with it. Glad it exists but didn't really like how it was adapted.
