Shenseea had not made a big impression in the USA. She was hyped up and made a stupid song with Megan the Stallion, which was a missed opportunity to introduce herself to a widespread American audience. Instead she did a counterfeit WAP instead. The international market is not thirsting for another pop artist but an authentic dancehall artist who makes songs that can transcend the Caribbean diaspora. Songs that people can understand and dance too because it's on a wicked riddim. Shenseea and her group decided that they weren't going to become a top dancehall artist who has penetrated the international market but just jump to a pop artist. This approach doesn't work.

Shensea should have spent a good 12-18 months, travelling through different US Cities before releasing this album. Performing for decent size venues, experimenting with new sounds and building a catalog Building up an American fan base over time. Word of mouth is still very useful marketing. She could’ve made a few mixtapes and promoted them on the road before releasing her debut album.

This what I’m saying as someone who travels a lot this is big facts one you dominate in different areas of the world your fans will follow once you’re ready to make big in the US. Everyone wants to be like Rihanna and Beyoncé failing to realise there different approaches that lead to similar success. Furthermore those artist are once in a generation you don’t see people like that until every 10-20 years all of whom are unique.

Alkaline for example his fans love him genuine love, if this guy was truly serious about making it internationally he would. A fews years ago I was at Brixton O2 in London and that's when I realise the dedication his fans had towards his craft. They were practically sleep outside the centre and fighting to see him it got cancelled due to the fans behaviour but it was a sold show, and went yuh check this youth has real fans nuh matter what anyone say and he doesn't have to over promote himself. He used gimmicks to bus but step from that and let his music speak for itself. That's impact Shen lacks and no amount of funding can buy yuh that.

I like Shen. I do. I just saw the video where she called Caribbean people stupid - not cool. Agreed. But here is also what I see…there was an interview that she did with On Stage about 5 years ago when she said that she wants to do pop but chose to deejay first because she felt that would put her on the map first. So honestly- she did what she said she was going to do. And while I cringe a bit when Jamaican artists abandon their sound because I agree - it is what makes us special. But I also feel like artists have a right to be whatever kind of artist they want to be. What is sad is that she - like many others - just want to make it. And she learned that you can’t want to make it “at any cost.” And she learned this hard lesson publicly. I think what she needs to do is stop trying to strategize and just figure out who she is and what type of artist she wants to be and just be authentic to that. And Lick was horrid.

You make good points Early on she did a song with ding ding ,rock the floor which is simply a pop song where she did more straight singing Perhaps folk have forgot that. But we're one too many ja artists miss a trick is they should ,learn to sing or write a song in Spanish ,French ,twi ,yoruba or Swahili The is a wider mass audience for their music is right Africa in terms of demographics than the USA and Europe It seems as if folk don't get some grand acknowledgement from USA it's as if they feel it's a failure .Popcaan ain't exceptional talented but he is very wise and astute in music business that's why he widens his market by perfoming in in parts of African Again ja artist should learn to create songs in other languages

Well said Andrea. Spoke ntn but facts and well rounded comments. Unlike the guy in the video. That's evidently on the shenseea Hate train. The album may have not been as successful as they wanted it to be in the US market. But regionally and with her core audience the album was a resounding success. But then again that's not gonna reflect because Caribbean people don't buy albums.

@@motivationalmotivations5144 truth be told dancehall music does not shift a mighty amount of sales whether it be shensea or someone else Shenshea is young and talented and not my tots of music However all she is done is release an album .It might be a success it might be a failure She has not died or killed anyone but the microscope from the narrow minded in ja court of public opinion and on social media is a bit over the top A example of those who are narrow mind if those who say she has sold out or she is not doing authentic dancehall music or she’s not being Jamaica All of that talk is a bag of nonsense .She is just a young person who so happens to be born in Jamaica and does music It’s not mandatory for her to do one type of music based on folks belief of what the expect to come from ja Afterall no one demands Beyoncé to keep overstating that she is American or that her music represents her nation Music is a art form and is not cemented down by borders and nationionhood When world famous opera singer Williams white performs no one cries and says he’s not being a authentic Jamaican Like shensea he’s just born in ja doing music Next year who know shensea may choose to do country music or rock It’s her prerogative as a human being .Where she is born has nothing to do with it My own hope is if the dancehall artists clean up there lyricalthey may get a wider But again shensea is young and if the album is not a great success she can try again .She not killed anyone .

The problem that Jamaican fans at home still have yet to compute 1) She is young and so there is chance to rectify and come better 2) It’s not whether she is doing rnb or dancehall Rather slackness and profanity does not travel so well abroad across the demographic This is why most dancehall artist for a few years has had success but very limited , it large from home or the diaspora who actually don’t even purchase the music they listen to .Koffee because she is a songwriter and musician in the traditional sense of singer songwriters across any genre As a result she is a authentic music artist whose just putting out music that does not require to be put in a narrow box and all her songs are thoughtful and melodious and organised with a high quality musicians While one too many ja artist went to the gun lyrics and slackness direction ., up pops koffee to show them what they also should have been doing years ago Shensea to to clean up her songs find another subject matter to sing and chat about in her songs

After the fans' tepid response to the teasers, the writing was on the wall. I think the fans felt left out. Plus, the album lacks an authentic Jamaican vibe. People abroad want that Jamaican vibe. They don't want to hear Jamaicans trying to sound like Americans. Still, I understand; Shenseea is racing against time. She wants to hit the big times before thirty. Because female artists generally fall off after thirty. But she needs to understand that her fan base is her priority. If her fan base is not going gaga over the project, nobody else will.

good analysis, good points. I think the "new management" and Shen got this thing wrong, twisted and all. She still hasnt differentiated herself from the other local US/pop artistes. your sound, has not been on display - features are not a way to market yourself and music. and her subsequent interviews haven't won her any points either as each of them from a PR level have been a little lacking. for e.g. Angela Yee - "what would you like to do in bed?" , good PR response would be - "well, i wrote 'foreplay' ..... listen/buy Alpha or i am gonna write a song about that, stay tuned"..instead of blurting out your personal business. let me not even go into the other interviews where she claims, the land of birth "patois" is talking bad - rather than saying is our unique sound that even hollywood to this day has tried to 'immitate' and cant replicate any at all... sidenote: distracting footsize though my lady lol .. where shoes or tell em zoom out

They think she’s pretty and that’s it. Lick let them down and they never came back to listen again. They want her to make music like her freestyles even if they don’t understand a word she says. Alkaline have a solid fan base. As long as he has that along with putting out quality music, he always gonna be on top. I am starting to think that he is the Dancehall version of Nas. Nas don’t get the attention from top media houses but he remains relevant still having success without their support, he have strong fan base too.

We are the ones we basically created every genre of music! Americans should be more scared if we don’t fw them because we are one of the main masterminds of musical sounds … that sound very frighten like she worship America n look down on Jamaica or any other Caribbean countries! The old shenseea needs to come back ! She did very well in the past without having to be Americanize ! She made it to rolling loud without a song like lick ! She represented Jamaica well on rolling loud too so now all this even her performance on jimmy kimmel like 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️Deleted the album out my playlist because I can’t listen to a song without remembering what she said about Caribbean people ! The twanging too like 😂😂 I lived in America for some time and wen I’m home in Jamaica it feels so weird if a inch of twanging roll off my tongue… ah boy shen I hope you come to your senses!

The thing about Shenseea team is that from the very beginning of her career they focus her on to the public and the international scene. You can't run before you crawl this for everything in life. What they should have do is focus on developing fan base in Europe, and even in Africa as Afrobeats with dancehall mix is quite big. They should study the market as you can't buy views forever you can't buy love and real fan support. And they should be careful this type of flop can get you blacklisted.

Ever wonder why Popcaan stays relevant...? It's because he be himself and sings authentic melodious Jamaican dancehall music. it doesn't matter if he's signed to a overseas label, he will sing in Jamaican patios on dancehall riddims. Shenseea is desperately trying hard to fit in an audience that either doesn't want her or is very slowly starting to take a liking but we Jamaicans that is use to Shenseea as a dancehall artiste is turning away from her.
