A Shepard tone, named after Roger Shepard, is a sound consisting of a superposition of sine waves separated by octaves. When played with the bass pitch of the tone moving upward or downward, it is referred to as the Shepard scale. This creates the auditory illusion of a tone that seems to continually ascend or descend in pitch, yet which ultimately gets no higher or lower (Wikipedia)

I confess I hadn't checked Wikipedia before publishing the video... yes, it's embarassing :D I had searched for it a few years back and at the time, the information wasn't that readily available. Thank you anyway

Right off the bat two classic tracks with Shepard tone: Echoes by Pink Floyd (in the end of the track and thus the album) and Hallow to Our Men by the Stranglers (also in the end of the last track of the album)

I should have remembered Echoes, if I remember correctly it is a descending shepard tone. Also, thanks for introducing me to the gospel according to the men in black, never been a great fan of the punk scene, but that track, and the whole album are quite experimental and visionary.

I`ve been subscribed to you for quite some time now that I don't even remember when I did it. but thank you for roasting and sweating yourself and sharing your findings. I agree Sheppard tones are very interesting for emotional provoking compositions, though one thing about synth design is that is such a rabbit hole it is so easy to get lost in it and forget about compositions, I wonder if someone has used vital in a more precise way, and made KZbin out of it. as you sort of glanced onto the emotion factor, made me question this a fair bit.

Thanks for the comment, if you've been following the channel for a while, I have to thank you for your patience, as you surely know, I'm not the most consistent youtuber around :) I'm not too sure I get your question though, what do you mean by "more precise"? I mean, sure there is a "method" to emotion, there are such things as musical theory and (litterally) all that jazz, I don't get how one could get any more precise about the emotional impact of sound, even though the effects of single components and details could be objective, the overall resuld does have a tendency to stay subjective... what do you think?

Grazie del commento :) sto facendo dei video in italiano per Sounders, il mio canale per esigenze youtoubistiche deve restare in inglese, spero tu riesca a seguire ugualmente.
