Sheridan Animation Portfolio 2020 [REJECTED]

Hi, I’m not a Sheridan student but I am a Seneca Animation student! Idk if it’s too late to comment on this but I’m just gonna state some stuff that probably hindered your score that you haven’t mentioned. For Life Drawing, I think the real issue is proportions. I wouldn’t focus too much on the face but rather the body instead. Really try to understand the muscle placements for the longer ones, as well as just basic anatomy proportions even for super quick gestures. For the animation, I think what you had planned was good but the execution needs some work. It doesn’t have to be an elaborate animation. When the Juice box falls, maybe you should have had it lean into it (when the juice box bends like the final bit of the animation) like a real person would, then implement some juicy squish and squash when it lands and springs back to shape with the straw being played around as a kind of secondary motion. The Layout part... I feel it. Scanning traditionally done layouts is actually hell. I would have went back in digitally and defined the lines more. The first piece is good, but I think you should have played with the ‘objects closer to us have thicker line weight’ tip. For the second piece, the ground just seems,,,, really bare. It’s almost like there is no ground there at all. I’m guessing it’s snow (which is hard to work with as just lineart), but I would have still put in some plants poking out or rocks. Maybe some already made footprints too. The second piece also doesn't tell as much of a story but it’s probably because of how bare it is. That’s all the advice I have to give. Hopefully you get in this year! And if not, Seneca welcomes you with open arms 👀 it’s a fun environment to be at since we get personal studios and everyone is generally very nice and friendly including the profs. It’s a pretty tight knit program since there’s only ~70 students :)

Thank you so much, and I have already re-applied for this year LOL but I agree completely with everything you said! I played it way too safe last year, and this year I really pushed myself more and experimented showing off more of myself rather than trying to do what I believed they want from me. The life drawings for sure, I looked at the ones I have this year and MAN MY LIFE DRAWINGS HERE WERE SO BAD LOOOL but yeah, I focused a lot more in the last year working on structure and form, rather than my loose odd lines. and for the animation, yeah, I really wasn't sure how creative I get and what I ended up doing was quite boring to be honest. And without purpose either and the layouts, yessss I couldn't agree more! Another reason I think they took off marks is proportions, if you imagine the interior one, the girl on the couch if she were to stand next to the desk (even though the desk is correctly going to the vanishing points) the desk is WAY too low to the ground. And the exterior one is quite bare and empty, so I made sure to fix that this year! If I don't get in this year, I will be going to Seneca. I got accepted there! :)

I've seen countless portfolio vids but I haven't commented on a single one so far. I dunno why yours stuck out to me, but your positive attitude is so genuine and contagious. And I really need to make a new video, I actually got rejected again another two times after this one. But!! I got into another animation program, and I want to talk about that at some point. Surprised you didn’t talk about the animation. For next year try to show more story and fundamentals. The juice box fell and then did an action that had no purpose.

Ah it's good that you mentioned that! I actually didn't put any tips in for that since I did pretty poorly in it, and I wasn't all too sure what dropped my grade a whole bunch, plus the email from the profs said not to ask for feedback. But what you said makes a lot of sense, I'll have to do that for next year!

Oh yes, you should definitely use a reference for your hand drawings! I can guarantee almost all of the artists use a photo for their hand drawings. Not tracing of course, but to give you a good example of what it looks like. :) Hope this helps!

hey, i don't know if you remember me but it's lydia (aka: epic/epickitten202/sociallyineptpotato)! i was having a Nostalgia Moment(tm) of when i was in the animation community and decided to look around at some of my old friends' pages. it's great to see you're doing well! im sorry you were rejected, but as other comments have said, keep your spirits up girl! with focus and hard work i'm sure you can get in next year. by the way, it's crazy how much your art has improved! it's evident that you've been working hard and man has it paid off! :) anyways, i wish you luck in your future endeavors and i hope that you and your family are safe and healthy during this strange time!

"English, Grade 12 (ENG4U) plus One Grade 11 or 12 Visual Arts credit at the M, or Open Level Four other Grade 12 subjects at the U or M level Minimum 65% overall average or Two semesters of postsecondary education including required courses with a minimum 65% overall average" i see these things but not sure I understand :( so hope you can explain it for me please...

Ah! Basically it's saying if you're applying from highschool, you need to have you grade 12 English credit, a visual arts credit, four other high school courses, and a grade average of 65 or higher! The second part is referring to if you're applying from a college.

Save some money. If you known what you like drawing or doing the most, take plenty of online workshop. See how far you get in a year. Try and get a job if you can in the field :) Don’t be lazy. Stay motivated. Good Luck :)

Thank you!! I'm really hoping to get in when I try again! :) And yeah, the competition is SUPER fierce, about 800+ applicants apply each year, and only around 125 get accepted. So basically like a 1/8 chance :') I'm not too sure where I lost marks either, but I would love to eventually get in contact with someone who can help me fine tune for next year!
