I can't begin telling you how nice these types of videos are, especially for niche games like this. I'd like to get more into dogfighting games like these and there are a lot of concepts to learn, so it helps to learn the types of things I can think about to better my game.

That's a great video, very good FW190 tactics.

This reminds me of the first dogfight described by Norbert Hannig, a FW190 pilot with JG54. He and his section leader escorted a recon ME110 to spot for artillery. They were contested by nearly a dozen LaGG 3s, but because they had a tremendous altitude advantage , the pair were able to hold their own--until Hannig's cannon exploded due to a defective/sabotaged 20mm shell detonating in it. The other thing I noticed is that BOS (as well as CLoD) seems to be multiplayer only.

SINGLE PLAYER!? AWESOME...I guess I will grab myself a copy as soon as I can, along with ClOD; as for the 'lure' of multiplayer, I honestly think I will spend most of my time recovering from repeated deaths.

Glad I found this. I used to play Warthunder and I dare say I was pretty good at basic and even a few advanced maneuvers, pretty good as defensive flying and all that, but I had 3 major weaknesses that kept me from being good and getting good stats: 1.) I was a bad shot. I very often managed to get myself into good positions and reverse on attacking enemies by making them overshoot and stuff like that, but I failed to close the deal because I couldn't hit them. 2.) I made the mistake of always grinding, instead of flying. With that I mean, I flew each plane in the tech tree till I had unlocked all the upgrades and the next plane in line, but when I finally had them spaded and fully upgraded, I moved on to the next one, instead of flying the upgraded one. Flying without earning XP and upgrade points always felt like a waste to me, which caused me to always fly around in inferior stock planes and never taking the time to really get to know and profit from the full power of a fully upgraded plane. 3.) And this is why I write this comment here: I wasn't the best at judging when to do what. As I said, I knew the maneuvers, but I often wasn't sure what the best time to execute them was. So videos like this will sure be helpful when I get into IL-2. I watched many tutorials on air combat, like RamJB's Flight School videos, for example. They are excellent and go into great detail, even providing physical and mathematical formulae and all that, but none of the tutorials I saw ever really talked much about decision making. They tend to tell you how to do things and sometimes why, but rarely when. "Reading the enemy" and the situation is a skill that seems to be hard to convey. The first example of doing a clean and classical Boom & Zoom attack is something I know how to do in theory, but could rarely practice in Warthunder, because there things are just too hectic to set up such time consuming attacks and in "Realistic" mode (which is semi simulation, with realistic flight and damage models, but with unrealistic markers and "radar") you also can hardly ever surprise an enemy. In the beginning of my Warthunder career, I tried to apply what I had learned from general air combat tutorials. I climbed and climbed and climbed and looked for the perfect target to dive on and in the time that took, the battle was over and either I was alone against the whole enemy team, or my team had wiped out the enemy team and there was nothing left to dive on, hehehe. That is one of the reasons why I'm looking forward to getting started with a more realistic simulation like IL-2. There you have the time to set up proper attacks and you can actually get away with surprising the enemy.

I honestly think aiming is easier IL2, since joysticks in War Thunder are kind of meh.

Sheriff, what video settings do you use? As a new player I find it difficult to spot enemies in the first place. I am slowly learning aircraft identification but without being able to spot the aircraft, aircraft identification is useless, and tactics cannot be executed without knowledge of the aircraft in your area. I do not have trackIR or any other head tracking software and this might be part of why, but I do not think I will be spending that much money in the near future. Do you use ReShade or any other third party graphics software, and what are your in-game settings. Much appreciated!

Spotting is mostly practise. But some Settings help. But I dont use reshade or so. Just these: drive.google.com/file/d/0B7NEbwyXgfdDdzVtc0VaV3ZLVnM/view

HELLCAT GAMING I found it very helpfull to calibrate my monitor ( I think that's what it's called). Adjusting the brightness especially helped. Lots of people also go into the config file and edit the gamma setting even lower than the 0.8 you can set ingame. 0.67 seems to be a popular number.

Psyrion is there a good way to calibrate a monitor?

+Retrofly the windows calibration should be sufficient. Important is to setup the monitor not too bright.

KERF there are many tutorials to make a home Trackir, I recommend you look on the web, that if you have to learn to weld and have some basic concepts in eletronics since LEDs can not feed directly into the stream, for that you have to know a little Ohm's law. But I recommend that you look and you do a trackir, there is a before and after in the aircraft simulation games. I used for that, the cameras of a Playstation 3 that has a very high framerate of 120hz, the webcams are deficient for that, and then I made a clip of 3 leds, and I use the opentrack software. I hope you get this data.

A fine video except for one part: That bashing on the WoL server in the beginning as being a "fun" / "Noob" server only for training was really unnecessary. If you talked about beloga server or other dog fighting servers, it would have been acceptable. A lot many people enjoy flying on Wings. Otherwise, a fine video. Cheers o7
@DerKurfuerst
@DerKurfuerst 7 жыл бұрын
I dont think its really bashing rather than stating the fact that it is a beginners server. That does not include you can't have fun there. Its a bit for everybody for the most part since beginners GPS and can freely learn planes while people that are flying for a while now can try out new things of polish certain other aspects. But compared to TAW its a newbie server in a positive way (certain other things there arent that positive though)
@SheriffsSimShack
@SheriffsSimShack 7 жыл бұрын
Yep I really dont see a "bashing" here. i just stated how i see the server. Fun and a training server. There is no long lasting effect for your results on the server. Perfect to learn and to try things out.
@MrCatlolz
@MrCatlolz 7 жыл бұрын
The narrative that both of you have in your echo chamber regarding it being "a newbie server" is exactly the point I was mentioning. Beloga and the dogfight servers are beginner servers, WoL is not. WoL is an intermediate server for advanced players. It has GPS, but virtually all other assis-features are unavailable. TAW is for very good pilots that want a real hardcore experience, and enjoy navigation. The punishment is exaggerated, in order to make the people care more about their virtual lives, and that's perfectly fine. Don't get me wrong, I also like TAW. Just giving you the hint that this narrative about WoL does not resonate very well, neither on comms nor on the forums in the past. Fly safe! :P

@DerKurfuerst 7 жыл бұрын
Well. I don't quite get what is so bad about newbies. Newbies - unlike noob if we stay in that terminology - are beginners and not meant as an insult. And according to behaviour in flight and in chat (asking where to turn on the engine, no taxiing, horrible decisions in the making) the average playerbase seems to be relativly new to the game. It's beginners friendly and most of the time hast the most players online. And again: It's not said that there are no good pilots there however its at least for us from hydra more a server to practise since you don't have to take your life there too seriously since there are no consequences. To conclude: It's just the most beginner friendly in MY opinion since berloga is actually more overwhelming OR can be treated even more serious in 1vs1 fights. No one is "bashing" WoL for its playerbase and skillevel. I'd like to bash that server for other aspects and the potato it's running on.
@retrofly9
@retrofly9 7 жыл бұрын
I dont understand your defensiveness over the WoL server? It wasn't really bashing, just how he uses the server. Its a popular server thats always populated so finding dog fights quick and easy, great for practicing dog fighting. At no point did Sheriff say he didnt enjoy WoL, infact he said it was "fun" and at no point mentioned the word "noob".
