Watson’s limp was psychosomatic, meaning there was no real physical reason for it, but he wasn’t exactly faking. In his mind, he truly believed it was real. His therapist had been trying to help him understand that, but working alongside Sherlock helped his mind break free of it.

FACT! The mind has an incredible ability to give you all the physical symptoms without having the actual condition. I know first hand. Six years ago I worked for a company where my manager gaslighted me before I knew what gaslighting was. After a year of the gaslighting coupled with flat out harassment, I completely lost my short term memory and ended up in the hospital. I’m from the “walk-it-off” and “never let them see you sweat” generation. At any rate, I FINALLY called HR about the mess. After, I had the worst panic attack of my life think about how she was going to treat me after she found out I went to HR. In that moment, the entire left side of my body went numb. Even my tongue! I was convinced I was having a stroke, I even got dizzy. I’d dialed 91 on my phone before I thought that there was no way it was s stroke. After quick self assessment making faces in the mirror, balance test, strength test I then called a friend. Wanted to make sure I wasn’t slurring my words. I was ok.... the numbness lasted about half an hour and my tongue stayed numb a little longer. I went to the doc first thing and it was all in my head. Not in my head like a stroke in my head but, more or less, imagined.

So a couple things. The good doctor, house etc are based on sherlock holmes. Sherlock holmes invented all the super genius tropes. This show is pretty accurate to the novels as far as characterizations cause watson has always been a veteran. In each episode they draw elements from several sherlock holmes stories from the original books. The fan mentioned at the end is moriarty. Also a psychosomatic injury is basically your mind telling your body theres something wrong when there isnt. That can be caused by ptsd.

130 years apart and yet both Watsons are veterans of a war in Afghanistan, feels like there's a lesson there. I kind of see it with 'The Good Doctor' - it has a "defective detective" element and there's the David Shore connection so "inspired by" for sure, if not actually "based on" - but "House M.D." _really_ leaned into it, with the punny surname, his acerbic style, his drug problem, even his street address was 221. And then meta on meta, House is a doctor and Holmes was at least partly inspired by Dr Joseph Bell, one of Conan Doyle's teachers at medical school in Edinburgh (nodded to in the show when someone gives House one of Bell's books on medicine as a gift).

This show isn't accurate at all with the characters AND it literally mocks clever points from the cases in the novels. Overall a bad adaptation

The character of House was actually modeled on the character Sherlock Holmes, complete with the enabler/sidekick. (Wilson= Watson)

in the books, Watson is a veteran of the Afghanistan war in 1878

Yes, OG Watson was a veterated war hero in Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories who was wounded in July 1880 at the fatal Battle of Maiwand during the the Second Anglo-Afghan War after being hit by a Jezail bullet which shattered his left shoulder (or/also to the leg because Doyle wasn't always consistent in the details). According to Study in Scarlet, Watson originally served as Assistant Surgeon in the 5th Northumberland Fusiliers before being transferred to Berkshires. Unfortunately, many adaptations do not delve deeply into Watson's backstory, even though the Holmes stories were originally told from Watson's point of view.

Glad you two are finally getting to enjoy this. The first two seasons are brilliant. The third is pure fun, but it loses a bit by being a little silly. The fourth is still good, but pretty weird. Just wanted to point out two things. First off, good catch on House. House is based directly on Sherlock Holmes. Arthur Conan Doyle studied to be a doctor before writing the Holmes mysteries. House and Wilson paralleled Holmes and Watson in a near perfect fashion. Second: the clue of the scratches on the power port was pulled directly from the books, which were set from 1874 to 1918. In the books it was a lock that the drunk character scratched up with their key.

Also the "Rache" clue, where Anderson suggests - and Sherlock mockingly discounts - the actual meaning from 'A Study in Scarlet' (in general, particularly in the early going, the show does a good job of playing with and to Holmes fans' expectations without leaving new fans behind). Fun fact: Conan Doyle actually practiced medicine - and wrote the first Holmes stories - in Southsea (an area of Portsmouth), a few miles from where I used to live. Charles Dickens was born there, Rudyard Kipling did some of his growing up there, HG Wells worked as an apprentice there (and hated it apparently) and Neil Gaiman was born a couple of miles away. Must be something literary in the water :).

Assuming someone else mentioned it but psychosomatic just means all in your head Since it's been a while referring to when Sherlock meets Watson for the first time and he tells him that his psychiatrist thinks that his limp is psychosomatic

Everything after he meets the murderer falls apart in this episode. I didn't notice the first time I watched, at least consciously, but you can tell there's been a rewrite that doesn't mesh.
