When you think about this two first seasons John was a main storyteller and we saw a story from his point and how he saw Sherlock. In season three we see a story from Sherlock's point. He's emotions were always there, but we weren't alowed to see them, because John didn't saw them ( Sherlock was hiding them from him like Molly said). Now we see story from his point, soo we're allowed to see his true self even if John still isn't most of the time (we know why he jumped but John never learned; we see his relationship with Mycroft when John is not around, or his parents etc). I think that after all this time, Sherlock deep down still believes that, John likes him because of the work and the thrill and him beeing special. He's scard that, John will leave him if he shows his more ordinary, usuall self, so he keeps on putting this persona from episode one. Just like this high funkctionig socopath persona. It's way of protecting himself. I think, that if Sherlock told his best man speech (love letter - is there a other way to see it?) sooner John will cancel the wedding. Yes, he loved Mary, but ( wheter you looked at them as a romantic or platonic relationship they were soulmates ) he cared more about Sherlock, but he didn't know that Sherlock felt the same way. They were both the most happy before Moriarty and the Fall, and at some point John even stoped dating. That's why despite TSoT beeing this amazing episode it also brakes my heart, because you can see his they both realized at the end they will never get back to what they had.

The whole point (according to the writers) was that Sherlock will never explain how it was done. That is their way of paying respect to the original Sherlock stories. His death was supposed to end the stories, but there was so much public demand that the writer (Arthur Conan Doyle) brought him back...but did very little to explain how.

Eric S I went to a QnA/Signing with Moffat/Gatiss last year and asked if the Anderson explanation was the correct one. Moffat laughed and said it’s possible, and Gatiss (without Moffat knowing) shook his head “yes”. So I got my answer after all these years, even though I don’t have any proof of it.

In the real Sherlock stories Moriarty died around halfway through and it's the same in the show. Based on your comments I'm not sure you fully got Moriarty's death but that was the perfect end to his character arc in the show and it wouldn't have made any sense for him to NOT kill himself in that moment. The whole point of Moriarty's character is that he's bored, he finds winning too easy, he's alone, and he feels that there's no one else in the world like him. For most of the show he doesn't believe that either Sherlock or Mycroft are "like him" because they are "on the side of the angels" and not willing to do anything like Moriarty is. Moriarty went to that roof with a plan that ensured Sherlock had to die to protect his 3 friends but Moriarty made two critical errors. First he didn't realize that Sherlock had a 4th friend that mattered (Molly) which was a reasonable mistake for Moriarty to make since he personally observed Sherlock not caring about Molly, but the second mistake was that Moriarty made sure he had the ability to call off the hit on the 3 friends if he wanted. He did this because he was convinced that this was safe and that there's no way Sherlock could force him to call off the hit. However, on the roof, when Sherlock said "I may be on the side of the angels, but don't think for a second that I'm one of them" Moriarty finally, for the first time, believed it and believed that Sherlock would be willing to do whatever it took to make Moriarty call off the hit. That's why Moriarty started crying and kept thanking Sherlock, for the first time in Moriarty's life he knew that there was someone else like him - Sherlock always refers to himself as a "high functioning sociopath" and no one takes it seriously, but Moriarty did and he was overjoyed that someone had finally proven to be his match. He realized that Sherlock had created a situation where Moriarty couldn't win as long as Moriarty was alive, just like Moriarty had created a situation where Sherlock couldn't win as long as Sherlock was alive. They both had to die to beat the other, and that's why Moriarty killed himself, and died a happy man. And then it was Sherlock's turn to kill himself too, but unlike Moriarty, he had friends and therefore a way to beat the situation. I know some people are disappointed that Moriarty died in that episode but it makes no sense to me, his death was perfect for his arc and it would have been a disservice to his character to keep him alive past that point. You guys are following the development of Sherlock's character and his emotional side well. A note about when Sherlock told Mycroft "how would you know?" - that was a callback to 2x01 when multiple characters were making fun of Sherlock's virginity throughout the episode. When Sherlock said "I'm not afraid of sex" Mycroft said "how would you know?" While it will never be 100% confirmed on the show how he faked his death like others have said, it's generally accepted and also hinted at by the creators that the explanation Sherlock gave to Anderson is most likely the truth. Anderson is also wrong when he says he would be the last person Sherlock would tell - Sherlock LOVES proving Anderson wrong and showing off how much smarter he is so in fact it would make perfect sense that Sherlock would go straight to Anderson and explain the whole thing, just to mess with him, like he always does.

I'm so sorry to be that 'Well Actually' person in the comments, just ignore this if you're not interested x) but since at least one of you was disappointed by how in control over Moriarty the explanation Sherlock seems in his explanation of the fall, you might be interested in a theory I came across (I didn't piece it together myself) and changed my mind about what had happened (at first I was disappointed as well). Basically: The flashbacks to the rooftop that appear during Sherlock's story of how he did it that he tells Anderson aren't actually clips from The Reichenbach Fall-they're reshoots. The facts and events all match, but the emotion doesn't. In The Reichenbach Fall, there are points on the rooftop where Sherlock is clearly distressed, even panicking-even (or especially) after Moriarty is dead and before he's on the phone with John, when there's no one he could be putting on an act for. When he's on the phone saying goodbye to John, trying to convince him he's a fraud, he's crying (a thing that wouldn't be necessary for an act when John can only hear his voice). But in the retelling to Anderson, the flashbacks are reshot so that he looks at most mildly distressed, a little sad. He tells the story as if he was always steady and in control, in a way that contradicts and rewrites what actually occurred on screen in The Reichenbach Fall. So basically, the theory is that the story Sherlock tells Anderson was more-or-less true, but edited to make Sherlock look steady and control, when in reality he was panicked and afraid and heartbroken, and it was all probably far more scrambled together and last-minute and uncertain than he claimed. I especially like this theory because to me it also explains why the explanation of his fall is weirdly stuck in the moments between John forgiving Sherlock and Sherlock revealing that he already stopped the bomb. Why interrupt such a tense and emotional moment for an explanation of something that happened last season? I think it's because the way Sherlock retells the story of his 'death' explains to us how and why Sherlock lies, which allows us to reinterpret the reveal of the bomb not going off. So, in the explanation of the fall, how does Sherlock lie? Most of the details are the truth (in Sherlock's own words, 'only lies have details'), but he makes himself look calmer and more in control than he actually was. Similarly, when Sherlock disarms the bomb he leads John and the audience to think that he knew how to disarm the bomb the whole time, and it was all an elaborate ruse to get John to apologize (something he apparently wasn't too worried about anyway given how callously he was going about it). But throughout the episode we've seen how deeply he cares about John, and how afraid he is that John won't forgive him. I think that he's lying here in exactly the same way he lied about the fall: the broad strokes are true, but Sherlock really was panicking, wasn't actually in control the whole time. I think that a). he really didn't know how to turn off the bomb until he found the switch, b). really was terrified John wouldn't forgive him. And while letting John think he was going to blow up was indeed an awful manipulation, I don't think he did it because he took John's forgiveness for granted. I think he did it because he was terrified he'd lost John for good, and he knows John can almost never say how he feels without the push of fear and adrenaline, and so he uses the moment in a last-ditch desperate effort to find out if John still cares about him at all. And when he starts to laugh after John forgives him? I think that's partly part of the cover-up, the lie, and partly pure relief. I also buy into this reading because I think it explains so much about Sherlock from start to end of the series, if you see him as someone who is often very uncertain, and very afraid, and really very emotional, but is desperate to appear unshaken and in control. (I also think it's interesting that while in The Reichenbach Fall it seems as if the 'heart' Moriarty is trying to burn is Sherlock's reputation, by the time he returns Sherlock's reputation has been repaired, it's a non-issue. But throughout the entire season-even into season 4-Sherlock is on the verge of losing John, and is trying desperately to hold on to him. It makes me wonder if John was the heart Moriarty was referring to all along after all. And if perhaps he guessed more of Sherlock's plans that Sherlock ever imagined, and was playing a longer and more insidious game than has even been revealed by the end of season 4-but perhaps will/would have been in season 5, which the showrunners always talked about as the final season of the main show). Man that is *such* an essay, and I am sorry that was not the plan ... I cannot bring myself to delete it now it's all written out, but I do apologize x) Anyway you all are great, I love how much you get invested emotionally while also really digging into what you watch. Even on first viewings you pick up on so many fascinating details!!

They didn’t explain how he did it cause it wasn’t explained in the real Sherlock stories how he survived the fall however Thats actually mostly because fans wanted more Sherlock after the character was supposed to actually die and so the reason became “because he’s Sherlock” basically 😂😂
