Here's a short VFX Breakdown of my recent Sherlock teaser. You can watch the finished video here: • Sherlock: Series Four ...
The project took about fourteen months from start to finish. Custom practical elements were shot against greenscreen and composited into the 3D scene to give it more movement - from blowing leaves to torn fabric to falling debris to the passing cars in the background.
'Action Essentials 2' fire and smoke assets added that extra sense of realism, along with a few floating particles and the odd raindrop. 'Optical Flares' was used for each of the lights, and it was all brought together with a few natural light-leaks to give the illumination an organic feel.
You can see more about the modelling/texturing process on Facebook at / johnsmithvfx
Programs used: Maya, Mudbox, After Effects, Premiere, 3DS Max, Photoshop
Enjoy!

+Juu .Chan Because rendering a 3D set piece realistically is very different from writing and directing a live action TV show. Completely different skills required. Maybe we can get pixar or disney to hire this guy.

+Juu .Chan Well, I imagine if the BBC took 14 months to produce each shot of Sherlock you would be waiting 200-300 years between episodes.. :P

+pi ano that is true! The Dr who team were putting 1200-1400 vfx shots in a year, and that's a team of 8-10 people. It's all relative.

This is incredible! The modelling and textures are so realistic that when I saw the teaser, I thought you created this by film Baker Street and adding all the debris in post. I would never have though you actually sculpted the entire thing!

Just got word you were hired on Sherlock. Congrats! :) As for the footage, I wish we got more of this stuff. It still isn't shared much and when it is, it's always fast-paced cuts. I like videos like this, where we have time to truly see the magic happening.
