Just a bit of trivia, the town of Eger where the paper company was situated really exists. The aristocrat called Valdstejn was really killed there. Nowadays, it's called Cheb (pronounced as "Kheb") and lies on the border between Czech Republic and Germany. It's a beatiful town, I can recommend a visit :-) Bohemia is really the western part of the Czech Republic (where Prague is. There are Valdstejn Gardens in Prague, named after that very same aristocrat). It was a Czech-speaking kingdom in the Middle Ages, but when this story was written, it was part of Austria-Hungary and didn't have its own king. The clothes the king wears sound Hungarian.

It's me again Joe Dee Hunter from North Carolina USA. I have said this several times and many of the stories that I have listened to by Greg wagland but I have to tell you that anybody that can talk and portray for characters talking in a conversation at once and portray them so differently and so distinctly and so accurately I'm just amazed I've said this so many times already but I could listen to him I listen to him all the time he did American accent he did Cockney he did the Victorian English and various and sundry assorted other English dialects it's amazing to me that he can do that and change right in the middle of a sentence into another character and you don't even know you know it's the same man but you don't fathom how he can do that and do it so accurately and it sounds so good!! I just hope that he never stops narrating the stories because he has brought so much enjoyment to me and I'm sure to countless others. I said it before, and I'll say it again: the man is phenomenal.

Bohemia isn't a German-speaking country and it never was part of Germany. It was a Slavic-speaking kingdom in the Middle Ages and its kings spoke Czech, a Slavic language. When this story was written, it was part of Austria-Hungary. I suppose that's why the author gave it a German-speaking king with Hungarian clothes. But Bohemia didn't have a king in those times, it was basically a colony of Austria and its aristocracy was German-speaking. Nowadays, it's the western part of Czech Republic (where Prague is).

Oh wow! Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is Sherlock Holmes himself. This short reminds me of a true to life story of King Edward VIII and his 1st lover, a French woman, Marguerite 'Maggie' Meller. The King himself was anxious in recovering his letters from his lover in fear of becoming involved, somehow, after Maggie's murder of her Egyptian Prince husband and it all began, 6yrs before the murder, in a Parisian love affair bet Maggie and the king-to-be sometime in 1918, years after this fiction was written. And the word scandal... (creepy 😟) Hmm Adler and Meller sound the same. What a futuristic vision!

@@sherlock_holmes_magpie_audio Indeed, we're about to start summer soon (Dec. 21st), so we're averaging temperatures of around 20-22°C, with some days nearing 25+°C and all. I live in a coastal city, so we don't get very extreme hot (or cold) weather, but the capital city (about 2 hrs. away from me by car) has been suffering a hot wave and temperatures have risen above 30°C. Ah, the british knowledge of geography. In 1887, when this Sherlock story was supposed to take place, Bohemia (present day Czechia or Czech Republic) was part of Austria-Hungary and in fact it was Austrian emperor Francis Joseph I., aged almost 60 and married for 30 years, who at that time bore the king of Bohemia title. I think that making up some fictive country for the purpose of the story would have been less embarrasing. Although to be fair, he actually did get a mistress at around that time, actress Katharina Schratt.
@cha5
@cha5 3 жыл бұрын
CzechMirco Well most Sherlockians think that “The King of Bohemia” was supposed to be a disguised name on Watson’s part for a royal figure with possible suspects ranging from Prince Edward Albert, Prince of Wales to Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand to Grand Duke Pauvel Alexandrovich Romanov of Russia among other possible suspects for “The King of Bohemia”, Watson himself freely admitted to often changing the names of people involved in these cases especially ones with cases that were sensitive and involved figures of importance. And that’s not getting into who “Irene Adler” might have been, with speculation ranging from Sarah Bernhardt to Lillie Langtry. (Who actually had liaisons with Prince Edward Albert of Wales.)
@CzechMirco
@CzechMirco 11 ай бұрын
@@cha5 If it was indeed meant to be the Prince of Wales, it would have been an interesting story arc for him, because he is widely agreed to be the epoymous Illustrious Client from the later story. But if Watson's description of the King's attire is not part of the ruse, then Pavel Alexandrovich Romanov would have indeed be a better candidate, as the "barbaric opulence" of his dress would have certainly been at home somewhere east of Ukraine and not in Bohemia, where the nobility and middle class dressed according to latest Paris and Vienna fashion and such "barbaric opulence" would have been frown upon and probably even ridiculed.

Useful mckavitt13 You're correct, of course. I don't know when one supplanted the other. Of course we have Irene Handl who went by Eye-Reen-Ee and she was born at the turn of the last century.

Both the Stephen Fry version and Simon Vance versions pronounce Irene as I do. Mea culpa!

so germans are "uncourteous to words"...pretty steep Mr Doyle, pretty steep indeed.

I think he said 'pretty uncourteous to VERBS' meaning that the German language does not transfer well to English if translated directly; having a different structure that may sound rather gruff.

Uncurteous because Germans always place their verbs at the end of the sentences.

MrVolvobloke this. I’m Australian and my Dad’s family are Dutch. It took a while for me to get used to the sentence structures after translating letters to English. “To the seaside we are going” “much sailing we will be doing” etc

Only in some Sherlock Holmes pastiches and Sherlockian speculation, One popular theory among some Sherlockians is that Rex Stout’s detective Nero Wolfe was Holmes’s and Irene’s son. In the actual Canon though there’s no hint that they ever met again, Although Holmes does mention Irene Adler in a couple of his later cases in a purely nostalgic sense. ‘A Case of Identity’ in which Holmes shows Watson a Golden snuffbox which is in his words “a little souvenir from the King of Bohemia in return for my assistance in the case of the Irene Adler papers.” and in ‘The Adventure of The Blue Carbuncle’ in which Holmes casually mentions “My attempt to recover the Irene Adler papers,” and many years later in Holmes and Watson’s final case together ‘His Last Bow’ in which Holmes boasts of being the man who “brought about the separation between Irene Adler and the late King of Bohemia.”
