General Robert W. Hasbrouck, commander of the 7th Armored Division can be seen in this impromptu ceremony congratulating the five-man crew of 17th Tank Battalion Sherman tank "Bowery Bum" on May 4th 1945. The vehicle had the rare distinction of making it through almost nine months of combat with the same crew from Omaha Beach in Normandy where it came ashore in August 1944, wetting its tracks from one symbolic end of the continent to another. The fighting included support of Operation Market Garden as well as the Battle of the Bulge.

Always enjoy these forgotten snippets of History. Those boys probably look older than they really were. Glad to hear they made it through those tough times together. Just shouted you some coffees to say thanks for all these amazing clips you share with us! Cheers!

That's amazing, especially for a Sherman to live through all of that. I bet they had a lot of close calls, but I am glad they were okay,

When you just can't get enough salt water into your tank.😢

To say this is remarkable is an under statement. To survive in action that long and with the same tank and crew is incredible. I wonder if any of the crew is still alive? or wrote down there story? now that'd be worth a mini series about this crew.

The tank had worn out several engines and needed multiple the tracks replaced multiple times.

You could atleast give some credits to Uncle Sam. If he wouldn't have arrived in Europe, Ivan would have only lost more sons and fathers.

@@Better_Clean_Than_Green Number of sons and fathers was never a big concern for the Soviet Union. A million more or less wouldn't be for them a big cost to get to the Rhine. Or even Calais.

Eisenhower gave the Ninth Army the order to sit on the Elbe and wait for the Soviets. The US had already gobbled up most of Germany's interior territory, so there wasn't much point in fighting a bloody urban battle just for bragging rights when VE day was around the corner anyways.
