I think as long as his bloodwork shows his liver enzymes aren't too high, it's best to bite the bullet and remove the tooth. The vet stuff bone powder up into the root canal, as it goes back quite far, so that it doesn't collapse and make his snout look crooked. Anyhoo, the infection can affect heart health and even go to his brain. So honestly, you really don't have much choice, Jamie. We'll all be praying for both of you. 🙏💜

Sometimes a bad tooth just has to go, if possible. An abscess or infection can cause a lot of pain, but can also spread that infection. Always sending love and prayers for Sherpa and Jamie. 😻😁😻

I think dry kibble by itself it damaging to the teeth and gums, no matter the age of the dog. I feel dumb that if took many years for me to figure this out. So today, my dogs always have their kibble soaked a bit in water, then I add about 1/4C of goat milk, as it's full of probiotics and very healthy for their gut flora. I also use a dental additive to their water called Advanced Plaque and Tartar Dental Fresh. I tried them all, and I find that this brand is the best for keeping their teeth the whitest, their gums healthiest, and keeps their breath with no smell. It tastes horrible but apparently dogs can't tell the difference.

Dear Jamie, Our dear Trixie received her wings on Friday. She was a full 16 years old. She had her last dental and extraction two years ago and even with one elevated liver enzyme level, recovered very well. I highly recommend getting Sherpa's teeth cleaned, and all bad teeth pulled. He will only benefit from removing any bad teeth now for his comfort in the next years. Please if you can get it done soon. The poison of bad teeth affects his entire body including his heart. You do him no favours leaving it, and may only end up regretting the delay.

Right. The extraction will usually help. Had it done for my 14 yr old lab. 7 teeth, two months ago. Now fine. But the infection would have killed him. So the vet proceeded. His mouth looked like Sherpa's photo prior. My vet us his usual one. And us also dental certified. Not cheap, but worth for my loyal dog. Called Jack.

In my experience, dogs and cats prefer wet food, (but should always have access to dry and wet) especially as they get older as they need the water content. Please consider wet food from now on as his key meal, natures menu is meant to be excellent, and hopefully that will help his appetite too...if he will eat more, just give it to him! We can't have our sherps wasting away. Um seems like the tooth will need to come out, at least then you know it's not the problem. Please give Sherpa extra kisses from us all, he really is so precious.

We soak our greyhounds dry food and mix it with low protein wet food and our Rosie is missing 13 teeth but she has no problems eating it. Greyhounds also don't ever drink enough so at least through the soaked food they are getting extra water.

Jamie, dental infection can and does kill. The tooth MUST COME OUT, I’ve bowed to this necessity with two OLD dogs, and they went on well for years afterward. Find a good canine dentist NOW! and get it done. All good hopes and wishes for you both.❤

@@ar50000 - he did. However, they decided to use antibiotics and pain relief for a period of time, due to the liver issue (as I understand it). But sometimes one must take a deep breath, say a prayer, and remove the root cause. I have developed septicemia twice myself due to what are called silent abscesses. Sherpa’s dental abscess is known, but as noted, sometimes you have to do the scariest thing for results. I’ve followed these lovely videos for years, and want the best for both of them.

Found out from my nephews that my brother just started chemotherapy (he has Stage 4 terminal prostate cancer as well as leukemia and bone cancer) and his voice ended up being just like Sherpa after the first round. He's a long road ahead of him, just like our Sherpa. My brother has been fighting cancer for a couple of years now, and the fact he's still kicking and raising a fit has me hoping for a great recovery, or at least a longer life than what many can hope for with such a diagnosis. I will keep Sherpa close to my heart in my prayers alongside my brother as I send you all of the healing energy I can. Have a relaxing and happy Father's Day Jamie!

Please remove the tooth. My American Eskimo died suddenly from infected teeth when the infection got in his bloodstream. There is literally nothing you can do after that happens and they are gone within hours.

Jamie, I have walked where you are with Australia border Collie mix. Ask the vet, some of the arthritis meds will cause depression, limit appetite, and some of what you are seeing. We changed his meds until we got the right mix. It made his last days much happier. I am sorry you are going through this. Hang in there, remember they are worth it.

OK mate, you are caught between a rock and a hard place. i think you know the tooth has to come out, if it doesn't he is just gunna get worse, BUT, the surgery carries quite a risk, with his age, his i think it is liver(?), and this is bloody scary. These decisions are so damn hard to make, the what ifs really plague us. But here is the thing, you can only make it with the information available to you, the guidance of multiple vets, and most of all trust your gut. Whatever you decide, you only have Sherpa's best interest, his comfort and happiness at heart. It's agonising, but you have such great quality of Vets available to you, and quite obviously you leave NO stone unturned. You inspire so many to be better fur parents, you have set the bar Very high, thanks for the inspiration!

Poor fluffy boy, I'm sorry you're not feeling well.🙁 Here we see again the absolutely great bond between the two, Jamie clearly senses that his buddy is missing something and that he isn't doing well. I hope that the medicine will help him and that he will quickly become the bright fluffy boy we know. The first step has been taken and with Dad's surprise kiss attack he's certainly feeling a little better. The fact that he finished the bowl is also a good sign. I agree with what was said earlier about his tooth. You might not have much of a choice but to go ahead and take it out. On the bright side though you do know a place that can do it. First, Happy Father's Day, Jamie! I'm sure your children, human and canine, appreciate everything you do for them. For Sherpa's appetite, if you find he's turning up his nose at some foods, you might try buying Fortiflora (by Purina Veterinary - no Rx necessary). It's just a probiotic to help with digestion, but my cats go CRAZY for it. I use it whenever one of my elderly cats decides they don't want to eat, and it nearly always gets them chowing down again. It's a powder and comes in little packets. You just sprinkle it on their food. I checked and they make a canine version and Amazon UK sells it.

My my 14 yr old lab had the same mouth as in photo. A vet, his regular, was also certified for dental. She did a three hour surgery in which seven teeth came out. He was on pre- antibiotics for ten days prior. Pain meds, and antibiotics after extractions. Yes. It's touchy in an older dog. But he would have died without the extraction surgery. Two months later: he's doing fine. Hope this helps you. Best wishes for a good outcome.

From one dog dad to another I love your boy and hope all will be well with him. It takes a few days after tooth removal but then he will be right as rain and back to his old self. My old boys have had many teeth removed and they are as old or older than Sherpa and they did just fine. Also, happy Dog dad day you are a great one.

Poor Sheeps, been so long since I’ve heard him talk. I too myself just spent 3K on my dog to get 8 teeth removed and she’s 12. Her back molars were cracked because of a bone she was given. She couldn’t eat hard kibble without shedding tears so I had to soften her food before I bit the bullet to take her to the vet to get her teeth removed.

It’s such a hard decision to get that tooth removed for fear of a bad outcome but what’s the alternative now? He could be septic. You’re a spectacular dog dad and my heart is breaking for you both.💔

I pray sweet Sherpa gets the exact help he needs to feel better! If he needs his painful tooth extracted, hopefully the anesthesiologist (“Ana”) can safely and properly help! 🐶🙏❤️

my old lab same tooth looked almost as bad, they used meds made for elderly dogs, he made it thru and was better within a month. he lived another 3 yrs. it is scary but to just leave it probably isn't an option. praying for best outcome Sherpa!
